Short answers to the questions readers ask most. Each one links to the page that explains it in full, with sources.

Blast gates

What size blast gate do I need?

The size of the hose or fitting on each side, read as an actual end size. POWERTEC lists its 70135 as nominal 4-inch OD with an end that tapers from 3-29/32 to 3-31/32 inches, which is made to go inside 4-inch hose. More in Blast gates

Metal or plastic?

Choose by the ends first; the body is a maker description. POWERTEC describes the 70135 as a cast aluminum body with a steel sliding gate. We found no source that compares metal and plastic gates in use. More in Blast gates

Do blast gates leak?

We found no measurement in our sources. Makers' wording such as 'designed for eliminating air leakage' is not a measured figure, so we do not repeat it as fact. More in Blast gates

Do I need a gate on every machine?

A gate lets you close branches you are not using. On a collector with more than one inlet opening, Harbor Freight's 59726 manual says to cap the unused inlet with the supplied cap when only one inlet is in use. Follow your own collector's manual. More in Blast gates

What size blast gate do I need?

One whose ends fit what they join. POWERTEC's 70135 outlet is nominal 4-inch OD, tapering from 3-29/32 to 3-31/32 inches, sized to go inside a 4-inch hose. More in Blast gates: sizes, end types, metal vs plastic

Do blast gates fit inside or over the hose?

Check each maker's description. POWERTEC's 70135 outlet is a nominal 4-inch OD end sized to go inside hose, and Infinity says its 4-inch gate has tapered fittings on both sides to accept 4-inch hose. More in Blast gates: sizes, end types, metal vs plastic

Are metal blast gates better than plastic?

No source in our register measures leakage or clogging for either, so we cannot say. Compare the ends and the features each maker states. More in Blast gates: sizes, end types, metal vs plastic

Do I need clamps on a blast gate?

Where the gate maker says so. Infinity says hose clamps are required on its 4-inch blast gate. More in Blast gates: sizes, end types, metal vs plastic

Do these gates fit straight onto a 4 in machine port?

No. Their 4 in ends are male and sized to go inside 4 in ID hose. POWERTEC lists the 70135's end as tapering from 3-29/32 to 3-31/32 inches, so a 4 in OD port needs a cuff or a short hose between them. More in 4 in blast gates with stated end sizes

How many clamps do I need?

One per hose end. Infinity Tools says hose clamps are required on its 4-inch gate, and the same applies to any gate with tapered hose ends. More in 4 in blast gates with stated end sizes

Are there automatic gates here?

No. We cover manual gates only, with no switches, remotes or wiring. More in 4 in blast gates with stated end sizes

Cyclone separators and lids

Dust Deputy or Super Dust Deputy?

It depends on what pulls the air. Oneida says the smaller Dust Deputy is not meant for 4-inch hoses or single-stage dust collectors and points those users to its Super Dust Deputy, which it markets for 1/2 hp to 3 hp single-stage collectors. More in Cyclone separators and lids

Why does my bucket collapse?

Dustopper's FAQ attributes bucket collapse to too much airflow restriction, such as very long or small-diameter hoses. Oneida and Dustopper both advise a bucket wall of 90 mil or more. The bucket collapse guide covers both. More in Cyclone separators and lids

Does a cyclone stop fine dust?

Not reliably. The EPA states that a cyclone's collection efficiency is directly related to the particle size distribution. Makers' separation percentages are their own claims, and we make no air-quality or health claim for any separator. More in Cyclone separators and lids

Can I use any 5-gallon bucket?

No. Dustopper says the PRO fits most standard 5-gallon buckets and advises one 90 mil thick or more. Oneida advises 90 mil or more for its Dust Deputy and says the thickness is usually marked on the bucket bottom. More in Cyclone separators and lids

Does the Dust Deputy come with a bucket?

The Deluxe kits do: Oneida lists a 5-gallon, 100-mil bucket for AXD000004B and AXD250004. Check the contents of the exact model you are buying. More in Cyclone separator kits: what is in the box and what is not

Which port goes to the vacuum?

On the Dustopper, the top port connects to the vacuum and the front port is the pickup, per Dustopper's FAQ. Other separators differ, so read your own manual. More in Cyclone separator kits: what is in the box and what is not

What else do I need to buy with a separator-only kit?

A bucket and the hoses and elbows. Dustopper says its PRO separator-only version comes without elbows and hose, and its PRO kit lists no bucket. More in Cyclone separator kits: what is in the box and what is not

Can I use a cyclone for drywall dust?

Not on our advice. Oneida says the Dust Deputy is designed for light debris such as wood dust, and Shop-Vac warns against vacuuming hazardous materials; follow the makers' manuals. More in Cyclone separator kits: what is in the box and what is not

Can I use a Dust Deputy with a dust collector?

Oneida says no: the smaller Dust Deputy is not meant for 4-inch hoses or single-stage collectors, and it points those users to its Super Dust Deputy, matched to the collector's intake size. More in Shop-vac cyclone or collector cyclone? Matching the separator to the machine

Which Super Dust Deputy fits my 1.5 hp collector?

Oneida markets the 4/5 for 1/2 hp to 3 hp single-stage collectors, which takes in 1.5 hp. Match it to your collector's intake size as well. More in Shop-vac cyclone or collector cyclone? Matching the separator to the machine

What size hose fits a Dust Deputy?

It depends on the model. Oneida shows the original Dust Deputy with tapered 2-inch OD, 1-7/8-inch ID ports, and says the Dust Deputy 2.5 has female ports for standard 2.5-inch cuffed shop-vac hose fittings. More in Shop-vac cyclone or collector cyclone? Matching the separator to the machine

Does a cyclone catch fine dust?

The EPA says a cyclone's collection efficiency depends on particle size, and designs that catch finer particles need a higher pressure drop. We make no health or exposure claim for any separator. More in Shop-vac cyclone or collector cyclone? Matching the separator to the machine

Why did my Dust Deputy bucket collapse?

Oneida advises against old, damaged or thin-walled buckets and recommends a wall of 90 mil or more, usually marked on the bucket bottom. Dustopper also points to airflow restriction from very long or small-diameter hoses. More in Why a separator bucket collapses, and which buckets the makers name

What bucket thickness do I need?

Oneida recommends 90 mil or more for its Dust Deputy separators, and Dustopper advises 90 mil (0.090 inch) or thicker for its own. More in Why a separator bucket collapses, and which buckets the makers name

Will any 5-gallon bucket fit a Dustopper?

Dustopper says the PRO fits most standard 5-gallon buckets, not all, and gives no rim dimensions. Check the fit on your bucket. More in Why a separator bucket collapses, and which buckets the makers name

Can I use a 30-gallon drum?

With a lid made for one. Grizzly says the Shop Fox W1049 lid fits a standard 30-gallon metal trash can, not included, but gives no rim dimensions, so check the fit yourself. More in Why a separator bucket collapses, and which buckets the makers name

Why is there no Dust Deputy here?

No Dust Deputy kit is in our approved catalog yet. Oneida's manual lists the Dust Deputy Deluxe kit contents, including a 5-gallon 100-mil bucket, a 2-inch by 36-inch hose and two 2-inch elbows; the kits guide compares them. More in Shop-vac cyclone separators with stated ports and bucket

Which Dustopper port goes to the vacuum?

Dustopper's FAQ says the top port connects to the vacuum and the front port is the pickup. Other separators lay their ports out differently. More in Shop-vac cyclone separators with stated ports and bucket

Can I use these with a dust collector?

These are shop-vac separators. Oneida, for example, says its smaller Dust Deputy is not meant for 4-inch hoses or single-stage collectors and points those users to its Super Dust Deputy. More in Shop-vac cyclone separators with stated ports and bucket

Wyes, elbows and reducers

Can I use PVC for dust collection?

No plumbing standard approves it. ASTM D2729 covers sewer and drain pipe and ASTM D1785 covers Schedule 40, 80 and 120 pipe; neither addresses dust collection. If you use PVC, use adapters made for that pipe and follow your collector maker's instructions. More in Wyes, elbows and reducers

Do dust fittings fit S&D pipe?

Not directly, according to Rockler, which says PVC sewer-and-drain pipe does not connect to most dust fittings without an adapter. Woodcraft's WoodRiver S&D adapter fits inside 4-inch S&D pipe and works only with left-hand threaded hose. More in Wyes, elbows and reducers

What does a 4 to 2-1/2 reducer fit?

It depends on the reducer. POWERTEC says its 70136 cone reducer fits hoses only and is not meant for equipment ports, while its 70291 has a 4-inch end that friction-fits inside a 4-inch nominal OD machine port. Read where each end goes. More in Wyes, elbows and reducers

Wye or tee?

A wye joins a branch at an angle; a tee joins it square. No source we verified compares the two in use, so we do not rank them. Match whichever you choose to the standard of the run. More in Wyes, elbows and reducers

Which 4 to 2-1/2 reducer fits my machine's port?

One whose maker says that end fits a port. POWERTEC says its 70291 friction-fits inside a 4-inch nominal OD machine port, while its 70136 cone reducer is for hoses only. More in 4 in to 2-1/2 in reducers: into a hose or onto a port?

Why does my reducer fall off the dust port?

Often because it was made for hoses, not ports. POWERTEC says the 70136 is not intended to fit a 2-1/2-inch OD or 4-inch OD equipment port directly. More in 4 in to 2-1/2 in reducers: into a hose or onto a port?

Is a 2-1/4-inch reducer the same as 2-1/2 inch?

No. POWERTEC's 70147 has a 2.26-inch OD small end, while the 2-1/2-inch end of its 70136 is 2-15/32 inches OD. More in 4 in to 2-1/2 in reducers: into a hose or onto a port?

Does a tapered reducer improve suction?

POWERTEC claims its 70147 increases air flow and velocity, but its page gives no data or method, so we treat it as an unverified maker claim. More in 4 in to 2-1/2 in reducers: into a hose or onto a port?

Can I use PVC pipe for dust collection fittings?

We can speak to fit only. ASTM D2729 and D1785 are plumbing standards that do not address dust collection, so neither approves it; what they do tell you is which adapter the pipe needs. More in Duct fitting standards: hose fittings, S&D PVC, Schedule 40 and metal

Do dust collection fittings fit PVC pipe?

Not directly in most cases. Rockler says sewer-and-drain pipe does not connect directly to most dust fittings without an adapter, and it sells a separate adapter (52680) for Schedule 40. More in Duct fitting standards: hose fittings, S&D PVC, Schedule 40 and metal

What is the difference between S&D and Schedule 40?

They are different standards: ASTM D2729 for PVC sewer pipe and fittings, ASTM D1785 for Schedule 40, 80 and 120 pipe. Each needs its own adapter. More in Duct fitting standards: hose fittings, S&D PVC, Schedule 40 and metal

Can I mix metal and PVC in one run?

Only through an adapter made for both sides of each joint. We have no verified dimensions for snap-lock pipe, so use the metal duct maker's own transitions. More in Duct fitting standards: hose fittings, S&D PVC, Schedule 40 and metal

Is S&D pipe the same as Schedule 40?

No. S&D is made to ASTM D2729 for sewer pipe and fittings; Schedule 40 is made to ASTM D1785. They need different adapters. More in Sewer-and-drain vs Schedule 40 PVC for dust collection

Which is better for dust collection, S&D or Schedule 40?

No source in our register compares them for dust use, so we compare fit only. Pick one and buy adapters made for it. More in Sewer-and-drain vs Schedule 40 PVC for dust collection

How do I tell which PVC I have?

Read the standard printed along the pipe: D2729 for sewer-and-drain, D1785 for Schedule 40. If there is no print, ask the seller or pipe maker. More in Sewer-and-drain vs Schedule 40 PVC for dust collection

Do I need a special adapter for S&D pipe?

Yes. Rockler says S&D does not connect directly to most dust fittings without an adapter, and Woodcraft's WoodRiver S&D adapter fits inside 4-inch S&D with a 4.065-inch ID. More in Sewer-and-drain vs Schedule 40 PVC for dust collection

What parts do I need for a dust collection duct run?

One part for each joint: a collector-inlet connection, main line, wyes, elbows, a gate on each branch, a drop or hose to each tool, reducers where ports are smaller, and clamps on hose joints. Buy them all to one fitting standard. More in A small-shop duct run: the parts list, one standard at a time

Should I use one fitting standard for the whole run?

It keeps adapters to a minimum. Rockler says sewer-and-drain pipe does not connect directly to most dust fittings without an adapter, so every change of standard adds a transition. More in A small-shop duct run: the parts list, one standard at a time

Where do blast gates go?

On each branch or drop, between the main run and the tool hose, so you can close the branches you are not using. Check each gate's ends: Infinity says its 4-inch gate needs hose clamps. More in A small-shop duct run: the parts list, one standard at a time

Does my collector have to be outside?

OSHA's 1997 bulletin cites an older NFPA 664 requirement that collectors be outside buildings, with exceptions, for workplaces. It is not current home code; follow your collector maker and current NFPA guidance. More in A small-shop duct run: the parts list, one standard at a time

Which reducer goes straight into a 4 in machine port?

Not the 70136, which POWERTEC says fits hoses only. POWERTEC's 70291, which is not in our catalog, has a 4-inch end that tapers from 3.51 to 3.73 inches and friction-fits inside a 4-inch nominal OD machine port. More in Reducers and adapters with both ends dimensioned

Do these fit PVC pipe?

No. They are hose fittings. Pipe needs an adapter made for its standard, such as Rockler's Schedule 40 to 4-inch fitting adapter or Woodcraft's WoodRiver S&D adapter. More in Reducers and adapters with both ends dimensioned

Why do the 4 in ends measure less than 4 in?

Because they are made to go inside 4 in hose. The label is the family; POWERTEC's 70136 4-inch end is 3-61/64 inches OD. More in Reducers and adapters with both ends dimensioned

Does ASTM approve PVC for dust collection?

No. ASTM D2729 is the specification for PVC sewer pipe and fittings, and ASTM D1785 covers PVC pipe in Schedule 40, 80 and 120. Both are plumbing standards; neither addresses dust collection. More in Duct fitting standard finder

Can I tell S&D from Schedule 40 by looking?

Read the print on the pipe: it names the standard, such as ASTM D2729 for sewer and drain or ASTM D1785 for Schedule 40. Our sources give no reliable visual rule, so trust the marking. More in Duct fitting standard finder

What does "Not confirmed" mean?

No source we verified states that value for the standard. Several standards here have thin published data, and we leave those fields blank rather than guess. More in Duct fitting standard finder

Dust-collector hose

What hose fits a 1 HP collector?

The one that fits its inlet, which you read from the maker. Grizzly lists the G8027 as a 1 HP collector with a 4-inch intake, and its data sheet says no inlet adapter is included. Check your own model in the inlet finder. More in Dust-collector hose

Is 6-inch hose better?

We have no measured answer for home shops, and we publish no airflow figures. Follow your collector maker's inlet and instructions; the hose length and diameter guide covers what the evidence does and does not show. More in Dust-collector hose

What is an inlet Y?

A fitting on the collector's inlet that splits one opening into two. Grizzly's parts list for the Shop Fox W1685 shows a 6-inch to two 4-inch inlet Y for version V2.12.01 and an earlier 5 x 4 x 4 inlet for V1, so check your machine's version. More in Dust-collector hose

Does anti-static hose make a collector safe?

No hose does that on its own, and we make no such claim. Makers use antistatic, dissipative and conductive for different properties; read them as maker claims, and see what OSHA and NFPA say. More in Dust-collector hose

What is the difference between anti-static and conductive hose?

They are different maker claims. Masterduct calls its SL-F-EC hose electrically conductive with a stated surface resistance of 10^4 ohm or less, while it says antistatic properties are standard on all its PUR hoses. More in Anti-static, dissipative and conductive hose: reading the claims

Does an anti-static hose stop shocks?

No source in our register measures that. Shop-Vac says static shocks come from static buildup and are common at low humidity, and Festool says antistatic performance needs a complete antistatic system. More in Anti-static, dissipative and conductive hose: reading the claims

Do I need to ground my dust collection hose?

We give no grounding instructions. OSHA recommends that workplaces ground equipment prone to static, and Cen-Tec says the vac tank needs to be grounded for its anti-static route to work; follow your makers' manuals. More in Anti-static, dissipative and conductive hose: reading the claims

Is a wire-reinforced hose grounded?

Not by that fact alone. A wire helix holds the hose's shape; whether it is meant to be connected is the hose maker's statement to make. More in Anti-static, dissipative and conductive hose: reading the claims

What 4-inch hose fits my collector?

Start with your collector's manual for the inlet size, then pick a hose whose inside diameter goes over the fittings you use. Infinity, for example, says its 4-inch gate's tapered ends accept 4-inch hose with clamps. More in Choosing 4 in dust-collector hose

What is a left-hand spiral hose?

A hose whose wire winds counterclockwise when you look at an open end, the identification Lee Valley gives. Left-hand bridge clamps and some threaded adapters fit only that hand. More in Choosing 4 in dust-collector hose

Does a 4-inch hose fit a 4-inch PVC pipe?

Only through an adapter made for that pipe standard. Woodcraft's WoodRiver S&D adapter, for example, fits inside 4-inch S&D pipe and works only with left-hand threaded hose. More in Choosing 4 in dust-collector hose

What do vacuum rating and bend radius mean?

The maximum vacuum a hose is rated to hold and the tightest curve its maker allows. McMaster-Carr lists both for each duct hose; check whether your listing states them. More in Choosing 4 in dust-collector hose

What size is my dust collector inlet?

Read your own unit's manual or data sheet. Grizzly lists a 4-inch main inlet for the G8027 and Harbor Freight a 4-inch inlet for the 59726, but those are nominal sizes for those models only. More in Dust-collector inlet sizes: 4 in inlets, inlet Ys and caps

What is an inlet Y and do I need it?

It splits one collector inlet into two or more openings. Whether yours has one, and its sizes, depends on the model and version: Grizzly's W1685 parts list shows a 6 x 4 x 4 Y for V2.12.01 and a 5 x 4 x 4 part for V1. More in Dust-collector inlet sizes: 4 in inlets, inlet Ys and caps

What do I do with the unused inlet?

Follow your manual. Harbor Freight's 59726 manual says to cap the unused inlet with the supplied inlet cap when only one inlet is in use. More in Dust-collector inlet sizes: 4 in inlets, inlet Ys and caps

Can I run a 6-inch hose to my collector?

Only where the maker's own inlet part is 6 inches, as on the W1685 V2.12.01 inlet Y in Grizzly's parts list. Check your machine's version first. More in Dust-collector inlet sizes: 4 in inlets, inlet Ys and caps

What inlet does the JET DC-1100VX-CK have?

We could not confirm it from a verified source, so we publish no figure. Read JET's manual and parts list for your unit. More in Dust-collector inlet sizes: 4 in inlets, inlet Ys and caps

Does a longer dust hose reduce suction?

Hose choice can matter. Woodgears reports that hose choice affected airflow much more on the tested dust collectors than on the tested shop vac; it is one experimenter's equipment, so we give no figures. More in Dust hose length and diameter: what the evidence shows

Is a 2-1/2-inch hose OK on a dust collector?

Woodgears included 2.5-inch collector hose in its experiment and found hose choice mattered more on the collectors than on the shop vac. Follow your collector maker's manual for the hose it names. More in Dust hose length and diameter: what the evidence shows

Why does my separator bucket collapse with a long hose?

Dustopper's FAQ attributes bucket collapse to too much airflow restriction, such as very long or small-diameter hoses. Use the bucket the separator maker names, and ask the maker before changing anything. More in Dust hose length and diameter: what the evidence shows

How long can a dust collector hose be?

No source in our register sets a limit. Follow the collector maker's manual. More in Dust hose length and diameter: what the evidence shows

How do I tell a left-hand hose?

Lee Valley says you can identify a left-hand spiral when the wire spirals counterclockwise at an open end. Its left-hand bridge clamps fit only such hoses. More in 4 in dust-collector hoses with stated ends and wall

Does 4 in hose fit my collector?

If your collector maker lists a 4 in inlet, start there. Grizzly's G8027 data sheet and Harbor Freight's 59726 manual both list a 4-inch inlet; check your own model and version in the inlet finder. More in 4 in dust-collector hoses with stated ends and wall

Why no 5 or 6 in hose?

No maker page we verified documents a 5 or 6 in hose product, so none is listed. Our 5 and 6 in data covers collector inlets and separator ports only. More in 4 in dust-collector hoses with stated ends and wall

Are these collectors recommendations?

No. They are reference machines that hoses and fittings attach to. We list what their makers state about the inlet so you can match parts, and we never recommend a vacuum, extractor or collector. More in Vacuum and collector inlet finder

How do I find my Shop Fox W1685's version?

Read the version code on your machine and compare it with Grizzly's parts list, which shows a 6 x 4 x 4 inlet Y for V2.12.01 and an earlier 5 x 4 x 4 inlet for V1. Grizzly explains that a code such as V2.01.17 means version 2, first used in January 2017. More in Vacuum and collector inlet finder

My collector is not listed. What now?

Read the inlet from the maker's manual or data sheet for your model and version, then measure the inlet's inside and outside diameter, as Rockler advises for every port. More in Vacuum and collector inlet finder

Hose cuffs, clamps and couplers

What size clamp for 4-inch hose?

One whose stated range covers the hose's outside diameter with the fitting inside it. A 4 in hose is sold by its inside diameter, so measure the outside once it is on the fitting, as Rockler advises measuring both diameters. More in Hose cuffs, clamps and couplers

Left- or right-hand?

Match the hose. Lee Valley says its left-hand bridge clamps fit only hoses with a left-hand spiral, which you can spot when the wire spirals counterclockwise at an open end, and it sells right-hand clamps separately. More in Hose cuffs, clamps and couplers

How do I join two hoses?

With a coupler made for both hose ends. Shop-Vac's 170400 coupling is a polypropylene part that joins two 2-1/2-inch wet/dry vacuum hoses, and the adapter that comes with Shop-Vac's 5430133 hose can join two hoses too. More in Hose cuffs, clamps and couplers

Is a cuff thread a pipe thread?

Do not assume so. Cen-Tec says its 34982 cuff threads onto 1.25-inch crush-proof hose, and its page does not say the thread is NPT. A hose cuff's thread is made for the hose it names. More in Hose cuffs, clamps and couplers

What size hose clamp for a 4-inch dust hose?

One whose range covers the hose's outside diameter where it sits over the fitting, which is larger than the 4-inch label. Measure it on the installed joint. More in Dust hose clamps: sizing by outside diameter and spiral direction

What is a bridge clamp?

A band clamp with a raised bridge that steps over the hose's wire. Lee Valley says its left-hand bridge clamps fit only left-hand spiral hose and need at least 1/2 inch between coils. More in Dust hose clamps: sizing by outside diameter and spiral direction

How do I tell left-hand from right-hand hose?

Look into an open end and follow the wire. Lee Valley says a left-hand spiral is one where the wire spirals counterclockwise at an open end. More in Dust hose clamps: sizing by outside diameter and spiral direction

Do I need a clamp on every joint?

Use one where the part maker says so. Infinity says hose clamps are required on its 4-inch blast gate, and each of its MagSnap ports includes one. More in Dust hose clamps: sizing by outside diameter and spiral direction

How do I join two shop-vac hoses?

With a coupler made for their size. Shop-Vac's item 170400 joins two 2-1/2-inch wet/dry vac hoses, and the adapter supplied with its 5430133 hose can join two hoses. More in Hose cuffs and couplers: threads, slip ends and hose-to-hose joints

Can I put a new cuff on a cut hose?

Yes, if the cuff's maker says it fits that hose's size and type. Cen-Tec's 42324, for example, threads onto 1.25-inch spiral hose. More in Hose cuffs and couplers: threads, slip ends and hose-to-hose joints

Is the cuff thread a pipe thread?

Do not assume so. Cen-Tec's 34982 cuff threads onto 1.25-inch crush-proof hose, and its page does not say the thread is NPT. More in Hose cuffs and couplers: threads, slip ends and hose-to-hose joints

Why won't a threaded cuff go on my vac's original hose?

Your hose may be blow-molded. Cen-Tec says its threaded hose fittings fit 1-1/4-inch threaded crushproof hose and are not compatible with most blow-molded hoses supplied with shop vacuums. More in Hose cuffs and couplers: threads, slip ends and hose-to-hose joints

Will a left-hand bridge clamp work on right-hand hose?

No. Lee Valley says its left-hand bridge clamps fit only hoses with a left-hand spiral, and it sells right-hand clamps separately. More in Hose clamps and couplers matched to hose OD

Is a rigid coupler or a rubber union better?

No source we verified compares them. Shop-Vac's 170400 is a rigid polypropylene coupling for two 2-1/2-inch wet/dry vacuum hoses; Rockler's union is rubber with clamps. Choose by the ends you have to join. More in Hose clamps and couplers matched to hose OD

Do magnetic ports need clamps?

Infinity Tools includes a hose clamp with each MagSnap port, so the hose is still clamped onto the port. More in Hose clamps and couplers matched to hose OD

Measuring and buying

Inside or outside diameter?

Both. Rockler advises measuring the inside and outside diameter of each tool port and hose connector, because the port's outside diameter has to match the hose's inside diameter. The measuring guide shows how. More in Measuring and buying

How do I know a listing's sizes are real?

Find the maker's own page for the part and compare. A listing that gives each end's size and matches the maker's page is a good sign; one that says only "universal" or "fits all" with no diameters is a reason to stop. More in Measuring and buying

Who handles returns on Amazon third-party orders?

The seller. Amazon's return policy says items shipped by third-party sellers go back to the seller, who must offer a US return address, a prepaid label or a returnless refund. Most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, with exceptions. More in Measuring and buying

Is the Amazon seller the brand?

Check; we never assume it. Read 'Ships from' and 'Sold by' on the order page. A third-party review that mentions a brand's Amazon store is not proof that a seller is the brand. More in Measuring and buying

Is the Amazon seller the brand?

Not necessarily, so check. Read 'Ships from' and 'Sold by' on the order page. A listing that shows Amazon as the shipper does not tell you who sells it, and a third-party review that mentions a brand's Amazon store is not proof either. More in Buying dust-collection fittings online: a checklist before you order

Can I return a fitting that doesn't fit?

Usually, on the seller's terms. Amazon says most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, with exceptions, and third-party items go back to the seller, who must offer a US return address, a prepaid label or a returnless refund. Read the order page before you buy. More in Buying dust-collection fittings online: a checklist before you order

Are AliExpress returns free?

Only for some items. AliExpress's Free Returns terms apply only to products with the Free Returns icon from sellers in the program, and the current terms say the return period is what the order page shows. More in Buying dust-collection fittings online: a checklist before you order

How do I check for a recall?

Search cpsc.gov/Recalls, as the CPSC tells online buyers to do. The CPSC says selling a recalled product is illegal. Finding no recall is not proof that a part fits or is safe. More in Buying dust-collection fittings online: a checklist before you order

Do I measure the inside or the outside of a dust port?

Both. Rockler advises measuring the inside and outside diameter of each port and hose connector, because the port's outside diameter has to match the hose's inside diameter. More in How to measure a dust port: inside or outside diameter

What tool do I use to measure a dust port?

A caliper is easiest: close the outside jaws across the widest point for the outside diameter and open the inside jaws for the inside diameter. A ruler laid across the center of the opening works if you read it carefully at the widest point. More in How to measure a dust port: inside or outside diameter

My port tapers. Which number do I use?

Record both the smallest and the largest diameter. Makers publish tapered ends as a range, for example POWERTEC lists the 4-inch end of its 70291 as tapering from 3.51 to 3.73 inches. More in How to measure a dust port: inside or outside diameter

Is 35 mm the same as 1-3/8 inches?

Not quite. One inch is exactly 25.4 mm, so 35 mm is about 1.378 inches and 1-3/8 inches is about 34.9 mm. That arithmetic does not make a metric part and an inch part interchangeable. More in How to measure a dust port: inside or outside diameter

The maker's label for my port is unclear. What now?

Measure the port yourself and ask the maker. Makita's SP6000J page, for example, describes the same port as 1-7/16 inch in one bullet and as a 1-1/2 inch OD port in another. More in How to measure a dust port: inside or outside diameter

Is a 2-1/2-inch shop-vac hose 2.5 inches inside?

Not necessarily. The label names a family. POWERTEC's 70136, for example, lists its "2-1/2-inch" end at 2-15/32 in OD and 2-9/32 in ID, and neither figure is 2.5 in. More in Nominal vs actual dust hose sizes: why "2-1/2 in" does not mean 2.5 in

Why doesn't my 4-inch fitting fit my 4-inch hose?

The "4-inch" on each part can describe a different surface. POWERTEC's 70147 has a 3.965 in OD on its 4-inch end, while its 70291 tapers from 3.51 to 3.73 in to fit inside a 4-inch nominal OD port. Compare the two surfaces that actually meet. More in Nominal vs actual dust hose sizes: why "2-1/2 in" does not mean 2.5 in

What does nominal size mean on a dust fitting?

It is the size family the part belongs to, not a measured diameter. It may refer to a hose bore, a cuff's outside diameter or a port, depending on the maker. More in Nominal vs actual dust hose sizes: why "2-1/2 in" does not mean 2.5 in

Is 2-1/4 in the same family as 2-1/2 in?

No. They are different labels, and some parts are sold to bridge them. Even makers can blur them: DEWALT Canada's DWV9190 page gives the same part as 2-1/2 in and as 57.2 mm, which is 2-1/4 in. More in Nominal vs actual dust hose sizes: why "2-1/2 in" does not mean 2.5 in

Is sawdust explosive?

OSHA lists wood among materials that can form combustible dust, and says finely divided combustible dust suspended in air at the right concentration can become explosible under certain conditions. That is a general statement, not a verdict on any home shop. More in Wood dust, fire and static: what OSHA and NFPA say, and what we do not cover

Does grounding my hose make it safe?

We do not say so, and we give no grounding instructions. OSHA's woodworking guidance lists static discharges among ignition sources and recommends that workplaces ground equipment prone to static. Follow your collector or vacuum maker's manual. More in Wood dust, fire and static: what OSHA and NFPA say, and what we do not cover

Can I vacuum drywall dust with my shop vac?

Follow your vacuum maker's manual; we give no advice on hazardous or very fine materials. More in Wood dust, fire and static: what OSHA and NFPA say, and what we do not cover

Does a dust collector need to be outside?

OSHA's 1997 bulletin cited an older NFPA 664 rule that collectors be outside buildings, with limited exceptions. That is a historical, workplace citation, not current home code. Follow the maker's installation instructions, as the bulletin itself stresses. More in Wood dust, fire and static: what OSHA and NFPA say, and what we do not cover

Not necessarily. The label is a family name. POWERTEC's 2-1/2-inch reducer end, for example, measures 2-15/32 inches OD and 2-9/32 inches ID, so check what each part's maker states. More in Dust hose size finder

How do I convert metric hose sizes?

NIST states that the inch is exactly 25.4 mm, so divide millimeters by 25.4. A converted figure is still only a guide; match the end your hose and port actually have. More in Dust hose size finder

What does "Not confirmed" mean?

No source we verified states that value for the size family. We leave it blank rather than fill it from seller listings. More in Dust hose size finder

Tool-port adapters

How do I find my tool's dust port size?

Look up the tool on its maker's page first, then measure. Rockler advises measuring both the inside and outside diameter of each port and hose connector, because the port's outside diameter has to match the hose's inside diameter. The dust port finder lists what makers state for six tools. More in Tool-port adapters

Will a rubber step adapter fit any tool?

No. A step or flexible adapter fits the range its maker states, and only that. Rockler lists its FlexiPort 64358 as a 3/4-inch ID by 1-1/4-inch OD rubber end with no stretch range, and Cen-Tec's adjustable 41851 has a stated range of 0.5 to 2.63 inches, which is a claim, not proof for every port. More in Tool-port adapters

Do I need the tool maker's own extractor?

No, but the maker's route is the one it documents. DEWALT says the DWE6423 port fits its DWV010 and DWV012 extractors directly and names the DWV9000 connector for other vacuums with 1-1/4-inch hoses. Bosch names its VAC002 or VAC024 adapters for 1-1/4- or 1-1/2-inch hose on the ROS20VSC. More in Tool-port adapters

Is 35 mm the same as 1-3/8 in?

Not exactly. NIST defines the inch as exactly 25.4 mm, so 35 mm is about 1.38 in, but a metric label is still a family name. Match the end your hose actually has, as the metric hose guide explains. More in Tool-port adapters

Which is male and which is female on a dust fitting?

A male end slides inside another part; its outside diameter is the mating surface. A female end slides over another part; its inside diameter is the mating surface. More in Male, female and tapered dust fittings: which end goes inside

Why won't two adapters join?

Usually because both ends are male, or both are female. Two male ends need a coupler over them, and two female ends need a spigot or coupler inside them. If the genders are right, compare the outside diameter of the male end with the inside diameter of the female end. More in Male, female and tapered dust fittings: which end goes inside

Can a reducer go straight onto a machine port?

Only if its maker says so. POWERTEC says its 70136 cone reducer fits hoses only and is not meant to fit a machine port directly, while its 70291 friction-fits inside a 4-inch nominal OD port. More in Male, female and tapered dust fittings: which end goes inside

What joins two hose ends?
