Nominal vs actual dust hose sizes: why "2-1/2 in" does not mean 2.5 in
A nominal hose size is a family name. See makers' real diameters for 4 in and 2-1/2 in parts, the two labels that conflict, and what to match instead.

Short answer
A nominal size is a family name. "2-1/2 in" or "4 in" may describe a hose's bore, a cuff's outside diameter or a port, and the maker's real dimensions differ from the label. Match the actual diameters of the two surfaces that meet, not the number printed on the bag.
What makers actually list
Here are makers' own figures for parts sold under round labels. The units and wording are the makers'.
| Part | Label | Maker's actual figures | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| POWERTEC 70136 cone reducer | 4 in end | 3-61/64 in OD, 3-41/64 in ID | [1] |
| POWERTEC 70136 cone reducer | 2-1/2 in end | 2-15/32 in OD, 2-9/32 in ID | [1] |
| POWERTEC 70291 tapered reducer | 4 in end | tapers 3.51 to 3.73 in | [2] |
| POWERTEC 70291 tapered reducer | 2-1/2 in end | tapers 2.45 to 2.49 in | [2] |
| POWERTEC 70147 tapered adapter | 4 in end | 3.965 in OD | [3] |
| POWERTEC 70147 tapered adapter | 2-1/4 in end | 2.26 in OD | [3] |
| POWERTEC 70135 blast gate | nominal 4 in OD outlet | tapers 3-29/32 to 3-31/32 in | [4] |
| Oneida original Dust Deputy | ports | 2 in OD, 1-7/8 in ID | [5] |
Three "4-inch" ends from one maker come in at three different sizes, and the 70291's 4-inch end is meant to go inside a port while the others are hose ends. The label tells you the family. The figures tell you whether two parts meet.
Two labels you cannot rely on
DEWALT DWV9190. DEWALT Canada describes this large hose adapter as connecting to a 2-1/2-inch hose OD similar to a RIDGID or Shop-Vac hose.[6] The same page gives its size as "2 1/2" and as "57.2 mm", and 57.2 mm is 2-1/4 in. Because the page conflicts with itself, we publish no dimension for this part.
Oneida Dust Deputy 2.5. Oneida says it has female ports that accept standard 2.5-inch cuffed shop-vac hose fittings.[5] The "2.5" names the cuff family it takes. Oneida's own manual gives conflicting inside-diameter figures for it, so we publish no single ID.
"Most" means most
Makers often hedge, and the hedge matters. POWERTEC says the 70291's 2-1/2-inch end fits inside "most" 2-1/2-inch ID dust collector hoses.[2] That is not every hose. If yours is near the edge of the range, check its ID against the stated 2.45 to 2.49 in taper before you buy.
Inch and millimeter labels
One inch is exactly 25.4 mm.[7] A conversion tells you how two labels compare on paper. It is never evidence that a metric part fits an inch part.
How to use this
- Measure the port and the hose end: ID, OD and any taper.
- Decide which end goes inside the other.
- Compare your numbers with the maker's stated figures for the part, not with its label.
An adapter whose maker publishes its end sizes is easier to check. POWERTEC lists both ends of the 70136 and the 70147.
Picks that fit2 products
Choose the 70147 (4 in to 2-1/4 in, single) when your 4 in hose has to step down to a 2-1/4 in end, after checking POWERTEC's 3.965 in and 2.26 in OD figures.
More on choosing
Choose the 70136 (4 in to 2-1/2 in, single) only to join two hoses: POWERTEC says it is not for machine ports. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or POWERTEC.

Questions
Is a 2-1/2-inch shop-vac hose 2.5 inches inside?
Not necessarily. The label names a family. POWERTEC's 70136, for example, lists its "2-1/2-inch" end at 2-15/32 in OD and 2-9/32 in ID, and neither figure is 2.5 in.[1]
Why doesn't my 4-inch fitting fit my 4-inch hose?
The "4-inch" on each part can describe a different surface. POWERTEC's 70147 has a 3.965 in OD on its 4-inch end, while its 70291 tapers from 3.51 to 3.73 in to fit inside a 4-inch nominal OD port. Compare the two surfaces that actually meet.[3][2]
What does nominal size mean on a dust fitting?
It is the size family the part belongs to, not a measured diameter. It may refer to a hose bore, a cuff's outside diameter or a port, depending on the maker.
