Hose cuffs, clamps and couplers
Size dust hose clamps, cuffs and couplers by the installed hose's outside diameter, its spiral hand and its wall type, and join two hoses with a coupler made for both.

Short answer
Size clamps by the hose's outside diameter once it is on the fitting, not by its nominal label. Then match the hose's spiral hand for bridge clamps and threaded parts, pick a cuff made for your hose type (threaded crushproof or blow-molded), and join two hoses with a coupler made for both ends.
What this topic covers
Three small parts hold a dust system together. A hose clamp squeezes a hose onto a fitting. A hose cuff gives a bare hose end a shape that fits a tank, tool or fitting. A coupler joins two hoses or two male ends. Each one is sized by the hose it sits on, and hose is usually sold by its inside diameter.
The decisions, in order
1. Measure the installed outside diameter. Rockler advises measuring both the inside and outside diameter of each port and hose connector, because the port's outside diameter has to match the hose's inside diameter.[1] A clamp goes around the outside of the hose, over the fitting. So the number for the clamp is the hose's outside diameter at that point.
2. Spiral hand. Lee Valley says its left-hand bridge clamps fit only hoses with a left-hand spiral, which you can identify when the wire spirals counterclockwise at an open end.[2] It sells right-hand clamps separately and says the hose needs at least 1/2 inch between coils.[2] Hand matters for threaded parts too: Woodcraft says its WoodRiver S&D adapter works only with left-hand threaded hose.[3] A plain worm-gear clamp does not care about hand; a bridge clamp does.
3. Cuff type for the hose. Threaded cuffs screw onto a crushproof hose's ridges. Cen-Tec describes its 42324 cuff as threading onto 1.25-inch spiral hose and ending in a 2.25-inch OD press fit for the vacuum tank,[4] and lists it in high-impact ABS.[4] Its 34982 PVC cuff threads onto 1.25-inch crush-proof hose and has a 1.50-inch female slip end.[4] Cen-Tec says its 41125 and 40751 threaded fittings are not compatible with most blow-molded hoses supplied with shop vacuums.[5][6] Check your hose type before you buy any threaded cuff.
4. Couplers for hose-to-hose joints. Shop-Vac's 2.5-inch hose coupling (170400) is a polypropylene part that joins two 2-1/2-inch wet/dry vacuum hoses.[7] Shop-Vac says the adapter supplied with its 5430133 hose can join two hoses or convert the 1-7/8-inch end to 2-1/2 inches.[8] On collector hose, a coupler is a male-male fitting with a clamp on each side.
Clamps that come with the part
Some parts include clamps; most do not. Infinity Tools includes a hose clamp with each MagSnap port.[9] Its 4-inch blast gate takes 4-inch hose on both sides, and Infinity says hose clamps are required.[10] Count your hose ends and buy that many clamps.
How to choose
| Joint | Part to look for |
|---|---|
| 4 in hose on a gate, wye or port | A 4 in clamp whose range covers the installed OD; a bridge clamp only in the hose's hand |
| Bare 1-1/4 in crushproof hose to a vac tank | A threaded cuff made for that hose with a tank end that fits your inlet |
| Two 2-1/2 in hoses | A 2-1/2 in coupler or a rubber union with clamps |
| 2-1/2 in hose to 4 in hose | A stepped coupler with a 2-1/2 in end and a 4 in end |
Picks that fit5 products
For left-hand spiral 4 in hose (POWERTEC lists its own 4 in hoses as left-hand), choose POWERTEC's 70226 left-hand bridge clamps, 5-pack.
More on choosing
For right-hand spiral 4 in hose, choose Rockler's 4 in keyed bridge clamps, 5-pack. For 4 in hose on gates, wyes and ports, POWERTEC's 70260 key clamps come in a 10-pack. To join two 2-1/2 in hoses or fittings, choose Rockler's 2-1/2 in rubber union with two clamps; to join 2-1/2 in hose to 4 in hose, choose Rockler's 2-1/2 in to 4 in mountable coupler. Check the spiral hand before ordering bridge clamps. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or the brand.

Common questions
What size hose clamp for a 4-inch dust hose?
One whose range covers the hose's outside diameter where it sits over the fitting, which is larger than the 4-inch label. Measure it on the installed joint. More in Dust hose clamps: sizing by outside diameter and spiral direction
What is a bridge clamp?
A band clamp with a raised bridge that steps over the hose's wire. Lee Valley says its left-hand bridge clamps fit only left-hand spiral hose and need at least 1/2 inch between coils. More in Dust hose clamps: sizing by outside diameter and spiral direction
How do I tell left-hand from right-hand hose?
Look into an open end and follow the wire. Lee Valley says a left-hand spiral is one where the wire spirals counterclockwise at an open end. More in Dust hose clamps: sizing by outside diameter and spiral direction
Do I need a clamp on every joint?
Use one where the part maker says so. Infinity says hose clamps are required on its 4-inch blast gate, and each of its MagSnap ports includes one. More in Dust hose clamps: sizing by outside diameter and spiral direction
How do I join two shop-vac hoses?
With a coupler made for their size. Shop-Vac's item 170400 joins two 2-1/2-inch wet/dry vac hoses, and the adapter supplied with its 5430133 hose can join two hoses. More in Hose cuffs and couplers: threads, slip ends and hose-to-hose joints
Can I put a new cuff on a cut hose?
Yes, if the cuff's maker says it fits that hose's size and type. Cen-Tec's 42324, for example, threads onto 1.25-inch spiral hose. More in Hose cuffs and couplers: threads, slip ends and hose-to-hose joints
Is the cuff thread a pipe thread?
Do not assume so. Cen-Tec's 34982 cuff threads onto 1.25-inch crush-proof hose, and its page does not say the thread is NPT. More in Hose cuffs and couplers: threads, slip ends and hose-to-hose joints
Why won't a threaded cuff go on my vac's original hose?
Your hose may be blow-molded. Cen-Tec says its threaded hose fittings fit 1-1/4-inch threaded crushproof hose and are not compatible with most blow-molded hoses supplied with shop vacuums. More in Hose cuffs and couplers: threads, slip ends and hose-to-hose joints
Questions
What size clamp for 4-inch hose?
One whose stated range covers the hose's outside diameter with the fitting inside it. A 4 in hose is sold by its inside diameter, so measure the outside once it is on the fitting, as Rockler advises measuring both diameters.[1]
Left- or right-hand?
Match the hose. Lee Valley says its left-hand bridge clamps fit only hoses with a left-hand spiral, which you can spot when the wire spirals counterclockwise at an open end, and it sells right-hand clamps separately.[2]
How do I join two hoses?
With a coupler made for both hose ends. Shop-Vac's 170400 coupling is a polypropylene part that joins two 2-1/2-inch wet/dry vacuum hoses, and the adapter that comes with Shop-Vac's 5430133 hose can join two hoses too.[7][8]
Is a cuff thread a pipe thread?
Do not assume so. Cen-Tec says its 34982 cuff threads onto 1.25-inch crush-proof hose, and its page does not say the thread is NPT. A hose cuff's thread is made for the hose it names.[4]
