Short answer
Choose a separator by what pulls the air: shop-vac separators are made for vacuum hoses, and collector cyclones for 4 in and larger. Then match the ports to the hose family you own, use the bucket or can the maker names, with the wall it asks for, and check what the kit includes before you order.

What this topic covers
A cyclone separator sits between the pickup hose and the vacuum or collector. It spins incoming air so heavier debris drops into a bucket or can before it reaches the filter. The EPA explains that a cyclone uses centrifugal and inertial forces to separate particles from a gas stream,[1] and that its collection efficiency is directly related to particle size.[1] The EPA writes about industrial equipment; we take only the principle from it.
Some separators are a separator lid that turns a bucket or can into the collection bin. Others are a cyclone that mounts on a bucket.
The decisions, in order
1. Shop vac or collector? Oneida says its smaller Dust Deputy is not meant for 4-inch hoses or single-stage dust collectors, and points those users to its Super Dust Deputy cyclones.[2] Oneida markets the Super Dust Deputy 4/5 for 1/2 hp to 3 hp single-stage collectors.[3] The 4/5 models include 4-inch reducer adapters for both ports and have tapered ports for friction-fit flex hose.[3]
2. The hose family the ports take. Oneida's manual shows the original Dust Deputy with tapered ports of 2 inches OD and 1-7/8 inches ID.[2] It says the Dust Deputy 2.5 has female ports that accept standard 2.5-inch cuffed shop-vac hose fittings.[2] Oneida's own figures for that model's inside diameter disagree, so we give none. Dustopper says the PRO fits wet/dry vacuums with a nominal 2-1/2-inch hose and accessory port, and recommends vacuums of 5.0 HP and higher.[4]
3. The bucket or can, and its wall. Oneida recommends a bucket wall of 90 mil or more for its Dust Deputy separators, usually marked on the bucket bottom.[5] Dustopper advises 90 mil (0.090 inch) or thicker.[6] Dustopper says the PRO latches onto a standard 5-gallon bucket without drilling or tools,[7] and fits most standard 5-gallon buckets.[4] For collectors, Grizzly says the Shop Fox W1049 lid fits a standard 30-gallon metal trash can, which is not included, and has molded ports for 4-inch flexible hose.[8] See bucket collapse and bucket fit.
4. What the kit includes. Dustopper lists the PRO kit with a 12-inch-diameter separator, a 2.5-inch by 36-inch hose and two sweep elbows.[7] It also sells a separator-only version with the elbows and hose sold separately.[9] Oneida lists a 5-gallon 100-mil bucket, a 2-inch by 36-inch hose and two 2-inch elbows among the Dust Deputy Deluxe kit contents.[2] The separator kits guide compares contents.
5. Which port goes to the vacuum. Dustopper's FAQ says the top port connects to the vacuum and the front port is the pickup.[6] Other separators lay their ports out differently, so read your own maker's manual.
Maker claims and limits
Oneida says the Super Dust Deputy separates up to 99.9% of dust and debris from the incoming airstream; its page's summary uses "over 99%".[3] That is Oneida's claim about separation only. It says nothing about air quality or health.
How to choose
Picks that fit4 products
For a wet/dry vac with a nominal 2-1/2 in hose, choose the Dustopper PRO kit (separator, 2-1/2 in x 36 in hose and two sweep elbows), or the PRO separator only if you already have 2-1/2 in hose and elbows; both need your own 5-gallon bucket of 90 mil or thicker.
More on choosing
Choose POWERTEC's 72295 low-profile separator if your vac has a 2-1/4 in inlet and you want included adapters for 2-1/2 or 4 in hose; it also needs a 5-gallon bucket. Choose Rockler's Dust Right separator with the 10-gallon bucket for a shop vac with a 2-1/4 in ID outlet. Dustopper listed the PRO kit as sold out on 2026-10-14. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or the brand.

Common questions
Does the Dust Deputy come with a bucket?
The Deluxe kits do: Oneida lists a 5-gallon, 100-mil bucket for AXD000004B and AXD250004. Check the contents of the exact model you are buying. More in Cyclone separator kits: what is in the box and what is not
Which port goes to the vacuum?
On the Dustopper, the top port connects to the vacuum and the front port is the pickup, per Dustopper's FAQ. Other separators differ, so read your own manual. More in Cyclone separator kits: what is in the box and what is not
What else do I need to buy with a separator-only kit?
A bucket and the hoses and elbows. Dustopper says its PRO separator-only version comes without elbows and hose, and its PRO kit lists no bucket. More in Cyclone separator kits: what is in the box and what is not
Can I use a cyclone for drywall dust?
Not on our advice. Oneida says the Dust Deputy is designed for light debris such as wood dust, and Shop-Vac warns against vacuuming hazardous materials; follow the makers' manuals. More in Cyclone separator kits: what is in the box and what is not
Can I use a Dust Deputy with a dust collector?
Oneida says no: the smaller Dust Deputy is not meant for 4-inch hoses or single-stage collectors, and it points those users to its Super Dust Deputy, matched to the collector's intake size. More in Shop-vac cyclone or collector cyclone? Matching the separator to the machine
Which Super Dust Deputy fits my 1.5 hp collector?
Oneida markets the 4/5 for 1/2 hp to 3 hp single-stage collectors, which takes in 1.5 hp. Match it to your collector's intake size as well. More in Shop-vac cyclone or collector cyclone? Matching the separator to the machine
What size hose fits a Dust Deputy?
It depends on the model. Oneida shows the original Dust Deputy with tapered 2-inch OD, 1-7/8-inch ID ports, and says the Dust Deputy 2.5 has female ports for standard 2.5-inch cuffed shop-vac hose fittings. More in Shop-vac cyclone or collector cyclone? Matching the separator to the machine
Does a cyclone catch fine dust?
The EPA says a cyclone's collection efficiency depends on particle size, and designs that catch finer particles need a higher pressure drop. We make no health or exposure claim for any separator. More in Shop-vac cyclone or collector cyclone? Matching the separator to the machine
Questions
Dust Deputy or Super Dust Deputy?
It depends on what pulls the air. Oneida says the smaller Dust Deputy is not meant for 4-inch hoses or single-stage dust collectors and points those users to its Super Dust Deputy, which it markets for 1/2 hp to 3 hp single-stage collectors.[2][3]
Why does my bucket collapse?
Dustopper's FAQ attributes bucket collapse to too much airflow restriction, such as very long or small-diameter hoses. Oneida and Dustopper both advise a bucket wall of 90 mil or more. The bucket collapse guide covers both.[6][5]
Does a cyclone stop fine dust?
Not reliably. The EPA states that a cyclone's collection efficiency is directly related to the particle size distribution. Makers' separation percentages are their own claims, and we make no air-quality or health claim for any separator.[1]
