Short answer

Buy the replacement hose your vac's maker lists for your inlet, by part number, and check which tank adapters come in the box. Brand alone is not enough: RIDGID claims its hose for RIDGID inlets only, CRAFTSMAN says "most" 2-1/2-inch vacs, and Shop-Vac sells separate hoses for its 1-7/8-inch inlets.

RIDGID LA2522

RIDGID lists the LA2522 as a 2-1/2-inch DUAL-FLEX locking vacuum hose that extends up to 20 feet.[1] "Extends up to" is the stretched length, not the length it sits at.

The kit holds one hose, two NXT locking adapters, one drum locking adapter and one friction-fit adapter.[1] RIDGID says it fits every RIDGID 2-1/2-inch inlet configuration. It says nothing about other brands' tanks, so we don't either.

CRAFTSMAN CMXZVBE38759

CRAFTSMAN lists this kit as a 2-1/2-inch by 20-foot locking hose with three adapters, and says it fits CRAFTSMAN and "most" wet/dry vacs using a 2-1/2-inch hose.[2] "Most" is the maker's hedge. If your vac is another brand, compare its inlet with the adapters before you rely on it.

Shop-Vac 1-7/8 in hoses

Shop-Vac lists the 5430133 as an 8-foot, 1-7/8-inch EVA hose for wet/dry vacs with a 1-7/8-inch inlet, with hose ends to retrofit Shop-Vac inlets.[3] Shop-Vac says the multi-function adapter that comes with it can join two hoses or convert the 1-7/8-inch end to 2-1/2 inches.[3]

The 5430138 is a 12-foot, 1-7/8-inch hose that Shop-Vac calls its "Universal Hose". Shop-Vac says it changes to 2-1/2, 1-1/2 and 1-1/4-inch diameters and fits standard and LockOn tank inlets.[4] The name is a product name. The fit statement is Shop-Vac's, for its own inlet types.

Adapters and couplers

Shop-Vac's 3-piece adapter kit (item 8019848) is described as polypropylene adapters for friction-connect or lock-on hoses.[5] The page names no sizes for the three pieces, so we can't tell you what they fit.

To join two 2-1/2-inch hoses end to end, Shop-Vac sells the 170400 coupling, a polypropylene part made for that job.[6]

Locking or friction fit

A locking hose end clicks or twists into a matching tank inlet. A friction-fit end simply pushes in. Each maker's kit says which ends it supplies; it does not follow that a lock from one brand fits another brand's tank. Check your tank inlet against the adapters in the box.

The pick

The CRAFTSMAN kit is the replacement hose on this page with an approved listing. It suits a 2-1/2-inch vac whose inlet takes one of its three adapters.

Picks that fit1 product

Choose the 2-1/2 in x 20 ft kit with three locking adapters (CMXZVBE38759) for a CRAFTSMAN vac, or another 2-1/2 in vac whose inlet you have matched to the adapters.

More on choosing

It is not a 1-7/8 in hose. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or CRAFTSMAN.

Questions

Will a RIDGID hose fit a Shop-Vac or CRAFTSMAN vac?

RIDGID says its LA2522 fits every RIDGID 2-1/2-inch inlet configuration and makes no claim about other brands. CRAFTSMAN says its CMXZVBE38759 fits CRAFTSMAN and most wet/dry vacs using a 2-1/2-inch hose.[1][2]

Is "extends to 20 ft" the working length?

No. RIDGID's "extends up to 20 feet" for the LA2522 describes the stretched length. A stretch hose pulls back toward its relaxed length, so plan your reach shorter than the maximum.[1]

Do I need a locking hose?

Only if your vac's inlet is a locking type. RIDGID and CRAFTSMAN kits include locking adapters, and RIDGID's also includes a friction-fit adapter; check which adapters each kit supplies against your tank.[1][2]

How do I join two shop-vac hoses?

Use a coupler. Shop-Vac's 170400 is a polypropylene coupling that joins two 2-1/2-inch wet/dry vacuum hoses, and the adapter supplied with its 5430133 hose can join two hoses too.[6][3]
