Short answer
A cuff turns a bare hose end into a fitting: it threads onto the hose and ends in a slip or press-fit end. A coupler joins two hose ends. Match the cuff to your hose's type, size and thread direction, and match its other end to whatever it plugs into. A cuff's thread is a hose thread, not a pipe thread.

Cuffs: threaded onto the hose
A hose cuff screws onto the ribs or wire of a hose. Two Cen-Tec examples show how different the other end can be:
- Cen-Tec's 42324 threads onto 1.25-inch spiral hose and ends in a 2.25-inch OD press fit for the vacuum tank.[1] Cen-Tec lists it as high-impact ABS with a 1.25-inch threaded hose end.[1]
- Cen-Tec's 34982 PVC cuff threads onto 1.25-inch crush-proof hose and has a 1.50-inch female slip end.[1]
Cen-Tec does not say the 34982's thread is NPT. Do not assume a cuff will screw onto pipe or a pipe fitting; the thread is made for the hose.
The hose type has to match
A threaded cuff needs a hose with ribs it can grip. Cen-Tec says its 41125 and 40751 Quick Click threaded hose fittings fit 1-1/4-inch threaded crushproof hose and are not compatible with most blow-molded hoses supplied with shop vacuums.[2] That is the usual reason a threaded cuff will not go onto a vac's original hose.
Spiral direction
Thread direction matters on wire-helix hose. Lee Valley identifies a left-hand spiral as wire that spirals counterclockwise at an open end.[3] Woodcraft says its WoodRiver S&D adapter works only with left-hand threaded dust collection hose.[4] A left-hand hose needs a left-hand threaded part.
Can I put a new cuff on a cut hose?
If the hose is a type the cuff maker names, yes: that is what threaded cuffs are for. Cut the hose square, and buy a cuff its maker says fits that hose's size and type. We do not present glue, tape or heat-shrink as a way to make a cuff fit.
Couplers: hose to hose
A coupler joins two hose ends.
- Shop-Vac's 2.5-inch hose coupling (item 170400) is a rigid polypropylene part that joins two 2-1/2-inch wet/dry vacuum hoses.[5]
- Shop-Vac says the multi-function adapter supplied with its 5430133 hose can join two hoses or convert the 1-7/8-inch end to 2-1/2 inches.[6]
| Part | Joins | Material | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cen-Tec 42324 cuff | 1.25 in spiral hose to a 2.25 in OD press fit | High-impact ABS | Cen-Tec |
| Cen-Tec 34982 cuff | 1.25 in crush-proof hose to a 1.50 in female slip end | PVC | Cen-Tec |
| Shop-Vac 170400 coupling | Two 2-1/2 in vac hoses | Polypropylene | Shop-Vac |
| Adapter with Shop-Vac 5430133 | Two hoses, or 1-7/8 in to 2-1/2 in | Not stated | Shop-Vac |

Questions
How do I join two shop-vac hoses?
With a coupler made for their size. Shop-Vac's item 170400 joins two 2-1/2-inch wet/dry vac hoses, and the adapter supplied with its 5430133 hose can join two hoses.[5][6]
Can I put a new cuff on a cut hose?
Yes, if the cuff's maker says it fits that hose's size and type. Cen-Tec's 42324, for example, threads onto 1.25-inch spiral hose.[1]
Is the cuff thread a pipe thread?
Do not assume so. Cen-Tec's 34982 cuff threads onto 1.25-inch crush-proof hose, and its page does not say the thread is NPT.[1]
Why won't a threaded cuff go on my vac's original hose?
Your hose may be blow-molded. Cen-Tec says its threaded hose fittings fit 1-1/4-inch threaded crushproof hose and are not compatible with most blow-molded hoses supplied with shop vacuums.[2]
