Short answer
Choose a 4-inch collector hose by how its ends meet your fittings (the hose's inside diameter over a male fitting, or a cuff), by the direction of its wire spiral if you will use threaded parts or bridge clamps, and by the maker's published vacuum rating and bend radius where they exist. Check which of these a listing actually states.

The ends: hose over a male fitting
Most 4-inch collector hose is bare at both ends. You slide it over a male fitting and clamp it. Two maker examples:
- Infinity Tools says its 4-inch blast gate (SKU 115-313) has tapered fittings on both sides to accept 4-inch hose, and that hose clamps are required.[1]
- Magport says the collar of its 4-inch magnetic coupling has a 4-inch outer diameter that fits 4-inch flex hose.[2]
So the number to know is your hose's inside diameter and the fitting's outside diameter. How to measure a dust port covers both.
Spiral direction
The steel wire helix in a collector hose winds one way or the other, and some parts only work with one hand.
- Lee Valley says its left-hand bridge clamps fit only hoses with a left-hand spiral, which you can identify when the wire spirals counterclockwise at an open end. It sells right-hand clamps separately and says the hose needs at least 1/2 inch between coils.[3]
- Woodcraft says its WoodRiver 4-inch sewer-and-drain pipe adapter works only with left-hand threaded dust collection hose.[4]
Look at a cut end of your hose before you buy bridge clamps or threaded adapters.
Vacuum rating and bend radius
McMaster-Carr's duct hose tables list a maximum vacuum rating and a bend radius for each hose.[5] That is the model of what to look for. The vacuum rating is how much suction the hose is rated to hold without collapsing; the bend radius is how tightly the maker says it can curve. If a listing gives neither, the hose is simply unrated there, not proven weak.
Wording you will see
"Wire-reinforced" is listing wording. Woodcraft's listing for the Dust Deputy Low-Pro Deluxe kit, for example, includes a 2-inch by 3-foot wire-reinforced vacuum hose.[6] It tells you the hose has a wire; it does not tell you the rating or the spiral hand.
"Anti-static" and "conductive" are separate claims with separate meanings. Reading anti-static hose claims covers them.
Does the hose matter much?
In one documented home-shop experiment, Woodgears reports that hose choice affected airflow much more on the tested dust collectors than on the tested shop vac.[7] That is one experimenter's equipment, so we give the direction only. Hose length and diameter: the evidence has the details.
Checklist before you buy
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Inside diameter | Matches the OD of the fittings it goes over |
| Length | Relaxed and stretched length, if the hose is expandable |
| Spiral hand | Left or right, if you use bridge clamps or threaded adapters |
| Wall | The maker's stated wall or material |
| Vacuum rating | A stated maximum vacuum, if published |
| Bend radius | A stated minimum, if published |
| Cuffs | Whether any end fittings come with it |

Choose by length: the POWERTEC 70111 is 4 in x 10 ft and the 70143V is 4 in x 20 ft, both described by POWERTEC as left-hand spiral; the Rockler Dust Right expandable hose comes in several stretched lengths, so pick the length on the listing.
More on choosing
Check the spiral hand on the listing before buying bridge clamps. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or the brand.

Does a 4-inch hose fit 4-inch PVC pipe?
Not directly. Dust-collection hose fittings, sewer-and-drain PVC and Schedule 40 PVC are different standards that share the "4-inch" label. Use an adapter made for your pipe's standard; duct fitting standards explains which.

Questions
What 4-inch hose fits my collector?
Start with your collector's manual for the inlet size, then pick a hose whose inside diameter goes over the fittings you use. Infinity, for example, says its 4-inch gate's tapered ends accept 4-inch hose with clamps.[1]
What is a left-hand spiral hose?
A hose whose wire winds counterclockwise when you look at an open end, the identification Lee Valley gives. Left-hand bridge clamps and some threaded adapters fit only that hand.[3][4]
Does a 4-inch hose fit a 4-inch PVC pipe?
Only through an adapter made for that pipe standard. Woodcraft's WoodRiver S&D adapter, for example, fits inside 4-inch S&D pipe and works only with left-hand threaded hose.[4]
What do vacuum rating and bend radius mean?
The maximum vacuum a hose is rated to hold and the tightest curve its maker allows. McMaster-Carr lists both for each duct hose; check whether your listing states them.[5]
