Short answer
"4-inch" names at least three different families of parts: dust-collection hose fittings, sewer-and-drain (S&D) PVC and Schedule 40 PVC, plus metal duct. They do not join each other directly. Pick one standard for a run, buy gates, wyes and elbows made to it, and buy an adapter made for each place where two standards meet.

Why the same label means different parts
A nominal size is a family name. Each family below has its own real dimensions, set by its maker or its standard. Two "4-inch" parts from different families can be far enough apart that one will not go into or over the other.
Dust-collection hose fittings
These are the gates, wyes and reducers sold for flexible collector hose. POWERTEC's parts are a well-dimensioned example:
- The 4-inch end of its 70136 cone reducer is 3-61/64 in OD and 3-41/64 in ID.[1]
- The 4-inch end of its 70291 tapered reducer tapers from 3.51 to 3.73 inches and friction-fits inside a 4-inch nominal OD machine port.[2]
- Its 70135 blast gate outlet is nominal 4-inch OD, actually tapering from 3-29/32 to 3-31/32 inches.[3]
Even inside one maker's line, a "4-inch" end can be sized to go into a hose or into a port.
Sewer-and-drain PVC
ASTM D2729 is the standard specification for PVC sewer pipe and fittings; ASTM lists the D2729-21 edition as active.[4] Rockler says PVC sewer-and-drain pipe does not connect directly to most dust fittings without an adapter.[5]
Adapters exist for it. Woodcraft says its WoodRiver 4-inch S&D adapter fits inside 4-inch S&D pipe with a 4.065-inch ID, works only with left-hand threaded dust collection hose, and suits pipe marked ASTM D2729.[6] We have no verified outside diameter or wall figure for S&D pipe, so we publish none.
Schedule 40 PVC
ASTM D1785 covers PVC pipe in Schedule 40, 80 and 120; ASTM lists D1785-26 as active.[7] Charlotte Pipe's Schedule 40 submittal says its pipe is Iron Pipe Size conforming to ASTM D 1785 and meant for pressure uses up to 140°F.[8] It lists a socket entrance ID of 4.509 to 4.527 inches for 4-inch belled-end pipe.[8]
Rockler's Schedule 40 PVC to 4-inch fitting adapter (item 52680) has a 4.5-inch ID rubber end and a 3.99-inch OD plastic end.[9]
Metal duct
Harbor Freight's 59726 manual tells owners to connect "4-inch vent pipe" to the collector inlet but does not name a pipe standard.[10] Nordfab publishes literature on its Quick-Fit clamp-together ducting as a distinct duct system.[11] We have no verified dimensions for snap-lock pipe or for Nordfab's ends, so treat each metal system as its own family and use its maker's transitions.
None of these standards approves dust collection
ASTM D2729 and D1785 are plumbing standards. Charlotte's submittal is about pressure plumbing. None of them addresses dust collection, and a pipe that meets one is not "approved" for a dust system. They tell you what the pipe is, so you can buy adapters that fit it.

POWERTEC 70106 4 in Y-fitting dust hose connector
Can I mix metal and PVC in one run?
Only through an adapter made for each joint. The fitting standard changes at that point, so the adapter must name both sides. Find yours with the duct fitting standard finder. We give no glue, cement or solvent advice for any joint.

Questions
Can I use PVC pipe for dust collection fittings?
We can speak to fit only. ASTM D2729 and D1785 are plumbing standards that do not address dust collection, so neither approves it; what they do tell you is which adapter the pipe needs.[4][7]
Do dust collection fittings fit PVC pipe?
Not directly in most cases. Rockler says sewer-and-drain pipe does not connect directly to most dust fittings without an adapter, and it sells a separate adapter (52680) for Schedule 40.[5][9]
What is the difference between S&D and Schedule 40?
They are different standards: ASTM D2729 for PVC sewer pipe and fittings, ASTM D1785 for Schedule 40, 80 and 120 pipe. Each needs its own adapter.[4][7]
Can I mix metal and PVC in one run?
Only through an adapter made for both sides of each joint. We have no verified dimensions for snap-lock pipe, so use the metal duct maker's own transitions.
