What the table shows
| Hose size | Nominal label | What the label measures | Maker-dimensioned examples | Tank and cuff ends | Metric arithmetic |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-1/4 in vacuum hose | 1-1/4 in (1.25 in), used by DEWALT, Bosch and Cen-Tec for small tool hoses | The hose family. The tank end is a different size: Cen-Tec's 42324 cuff has a 1.25 in threaded hose end and a 2.25 in OD press-fit tank connector | Cen-Tec 95567 (10 ft) and 95578 (16 ft): 1.25 in static-dissipative hose with multi-brand tool adapters | Cen-Tec 42324: 2.25 in OD press fit (high-impact ABS). Cen-Tec 41213: for shop vacuums with a 2.63 in opening. Cen-Tec 34982: 1.50 in female slip end | 1.25 in x 25.4 = 31.75 mm |
| 1-7/8 in vacuum hose | 1-7/8 in (Shop-Vac hose and inlet label) | Not confirmed | Shop-Vac 5430133: 8 ft, 1-7/8 in EVA hose for wet/dry vacs with a 1-7/8 in inlet. Shop-Vac 5430138: 12 ft x 1-7/8 in hose that Shop-Vac says changes to 2-1/2, 1-1/2 and 1-1/4 in and fits standard and LockOn inlets | Shop-Vac 5430133 comes with hose ends to retrofit Shop-Vac inlets | 1.875 in x 25.4 = 47.625 mm |
| 2-1/4 in tank ends and fittings | 2-1/4 in (2.25 in), mostly on tank ends, cuffs and vacuum ports | Usually a tank end's outside diameter: Cen-Tec 42324 has a 2.25 in OD press fit; Bosch's VAC005 vacuum end is a standard 2-1/4 in friction fit | POWERTEC 70147: 2-1/4 in end at 2.26 in OD | Cen-Tec 42324 cuff: 1.25 in threaded hose end to a 2.25 in OD tank connector. Bosch VAC005: 35 mm hose to a 2-1/4 in friction-fit vacuum end, for wet-dry vacs with a 2-1/4 in friction-fit port | 2.25 in x 25.4 = 57.15 mm |
| 2-1/2 in vacuum and collector hose | 2-1/2 in (shop-vac and small collector hose) | Depends on the part: POWERTEC 70136's 2-1/2 in end is 2-15/32 in OD and 2-9/32 in ID; POWERTEC 70291's end tapers from 2.45 to 2.49 in and fits inside most 2-1/2 in ID hoses | RIDGID LA2522: 2-1/2 in locking hose that extends up to 20 ft. A hose size is a family name, not a measurement. The same "2-1/2 in" can describe a hose's inside diameter, a cuff's outside diameter or a fitting's end. Each size page lists only what a maker or other named source states, with its source, so you can see which number is which.
For example, POWERTEC dimensions both ends of its 70136 cone reducer: 3-61/64 inches OD and 3-41/64 inches ID on the 4-inch end,[1] and 2-15/32 inches OD and 2-9/32 inches ID on the 2-1/2-inch end.[1] Neither end measures exactly what its label says.
Metric sizes
NIST states that the inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters.[2] The metric equivalent column uses that conversion. A converted number helps you compare labels; it does not prove that a metric hose fits an inch port. Festool's D 27 and D 36 are their own family: Festool lists its 577162 sleeve for D 27 and D 27/32 hoses and power tools with D 27 and D 36 flanges.[3]
"Not confirmed"
A field marked "Not confirmed" means no source we verified states that value for the family. We do not fill gaps from seller listings, and we do not measure parts ourselves.
Your hose or port is not listed
Measure both the inside and outside diameter of the hose end and the port it has to meet, as Rockler advises, because the port's outside diameter has to match the hose's inside diameter.[4] The measuring guide shows how.

Questions
Does a 2-1/2 in hose measure 2-1/2 in?
Not necessarily. The label is a family name. POWERTEC's 2-1/2-inch reducer end, for example, measures 2-15/32 inches OD and 2-9/32 inches ID, so check what each part's maker states.[1]
How do I convert metric hose sizes?
NIST states that the inch is exactly 25.4 mm, so divide millimeters by 25.4. A converted figure is still only a guide; match the end your hose and port actually have.[2]
What does "Not confirmed" mean?
No source we verified states that value for the size family. We leave it blank rather than fill it from seller listings.
