Shop-vac cyclone or collector cyclone? Matching the separator to the machine

Oneida's Dust Deputy is for shop vacs and its Super Dust Deputy for single-stage collectors: the ports, hose sizes and hp range each maker states.

Short answer

Oneida makes separate cyclones for shop vacs and for single-stage dust collectors, and says the smaller Dust Deputy is not meant for 4-inch hoses or single-stage collectors. Pick the separator family by the machine it sits in front of and that machine's hose size, then sort out the bucket or drum. Port sizes differ between the two families.

How a cyclone separates

A cyclone separator spins the incoming air so heavier particles drop out before the air reaches the vacuum or collector. The EPA explains that a cyclone uses centrifugal and inertial forces to separate particles from a gas stream.[1] It states that collection efficiency is directly related to particle size distribution,[1] and that high-efficiency designs that capture finer particles require a higher pressure drop.[1]

That is industrial air-pollution guidance. It explains the principle; it is not a rating for any home-shop cyclone, and it says nothing about health or dust exposure.

Shop-vac side: the Dust Deputy

Oneida's Dust Deputy Deluxe manual shows the original Dust Deputy with tapered inlet and outlet ports of 2 inches OD and 1-7/8 inches ID.[2] The Dust Deputy 2.5 has female inlet and outlet ports that accept standard 2.5-inch cuffed shop-vac hose fittings.[2] Oneida's own manual gives two different inside diameters for the 2.5, so we publish none.

Oneida is clear about the limit: the smaller Dust Deputy is not meant for 4-inch hoses or single-stage dust collectors, and those users should look to its Super Dust Deputy cyclones, matched to the collector's intake size.[2]

Collector side: the Super Dust Deputy 4/5

Oneida's current 4/5-inch Super Dust Deputy listing is titled as a 5-inch by 6-inch molded cyclone with 4-inch adapters and a 6-inch mounting flange.[3] Oneida says the 4/5 models include 4-inch reducer adapters for both the inlet and outlet and have tapered ports for friction-fit flex hose; its 6-inch models have ports sized for crimped ductwork fittings instead.[3]

Oneida markets the 4/5 for use with 1/2 hp to 3 hp single-stage dust collectors.[3] That is the maker's application range, not a recommendation of any collector.

On separation, Oneida says the Super Dust Deputy separates up to 99.9% of dust and debris from the incoming airstream.[3] That is Oneida's claim about separation only; the same page's description uses a different figure ("over 99%"), and neither says anything about air quality or health.

Which Super Dust Deputy for a 1.5 hp collector?

Oneida's stated range for the 4/5 is 1/2 to 3 hp single-stage collectors, which takes in a 1.5 hp machine. Oneida's other instruction matters as much: match the cyclone to the collector's intake size. Read yours in the collector's manual first; collector inlet sizes shows where.

Shop-vac separators on our list

These are shop-vac separators from Dustopper, POWERTEC and Rockler. Each maker states the vac hose or inlet it is made for; match that to your vac.

Picks that fit4 products

Vac with a nominal 2-1/2 in hose: the Dustopper PRO kit (with hose and elbows), or the separator-only version if you already have 2-1/2 in hose and elbows; Dustopper recommends vacs of 5.0 HP and up.

More on choosing

The POWERTEC 72295 lists adapters for 2-1/4, 2-1/2 and 4 in systems. The Rockler Dust Right is listed for vacs with a 2-1/4 in ID inlet and comes with a 10-gallon bucket. These are the sellers' descriptions. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or the brand.

None of these is a collector cyclone. For a single-stage collector, follow Oneida's advice and use a collector cyclone matched to the intake.

Questions

Can I use a Dust Deputy with a dust collector?

Oneida says no: the smaller Dust Deputy is not meant for 4-inch hoses or single-stage collectors, and it points those users to its Super Dust Deputy, matched to the collector's intake size.[2]

Which Super Dust Deputy fits my 1.5 hp collector?

Oneida markets the 4/5 for 1/2 hp to 3 hp single-stage collectors, which takes in 1.5 hp. Match it to your collector's intake size as well.[3][2]

What size hose fits a Dust Deputy?

It depends on the model. Oneida shows the original Dust Deputy with tapered 2-inch OD, 1-7/8-inch ID ports, and says the Dust Deputy 2.5 has female ports for standard 2.5-inch cuffed shop-vac hose fittings.[2]

Does a cyclone catch fine dust?

The EPA says a cyclone's collection efficiency depends on particle size, and designs that catch finer particles need a higher pressure drop. We make no health or exposure claim for any separator.[1]
