Connecting a 1-1/4 in hose to a bigger shop-vac inlet

How a 1-1/4 in tool hose meets a larger shop-vac inlet: Cen-Tec's tank cuffs by stated opening, the threaded-hose catch, and ready-made small hoses.

Short answer

You need a tank-end cuff whose outside diameter matches your vac's inlet and whose other end matches your hose. Cen-Tec documents several, each for a stated opening: a 2.25-inch OD press fit, a 2.63-inch opening and a 2.5-inch ID Milwaukee FUEL tank.[1] They thread onto threaded crushproof hose, not most stock vac hoses.

Why a small hose needs a tank cuff

A 1-1/4-inch hose is sized for small tool ports. Most shop-vac inlets are larger, so the hose needs a tank adapter or cuff at the vac end. The cuff has two jobs: hold the hose, and fill the tank inlet. Both ends have to match.

Cen-Tec's tank cuffs by stated opening

42324: 2.25-inch OD press fit. Cen-Tec says the 42324 threads onto 1.25-inch spiral hose and ends in a 2.25-inch outside-diameter press fit for the vacuum tank.[1] It is high-impact ABS. Cen-Tec does not say which vac tanks it fits.[1]

41213: 2.63-inch opening. Cen-Tec's 41213 joins a 1.25-inch threaded hose end to shop vacuums with a 2.63-inch diameter opening.[1] Cen-Tec names no brand, and neither do we: measure your opening.

62909: Milwaukee FUEL. Cen-Tec's 62909 Quick Click tank adapter is made for Milwaukee FUEL wet-dry vacuums and lists a 2.5-inch ID tank opening.[1] No Milwaukee model numbers are listed.

The hose type matters

Cen-Tec's fittings thread onto a specific hose. Cen-Tec says its 41125 and 40751 threaded hose fittings fit 1-1/4-inch threaded crushproof hose and are not compatible with most blow-molded hoses supplied with shop vacuums.[2][3] Its 34982 cuff threads onto 1.25-inch crush-proof hose and ends in a 1.50-inch female slip end.[1]

So if your small hose came with your vac, a Cen-Tec cuff is unlikely to thread onto it. Check the hose first.

Ready-made small hoses

The simpler route is a hose sold with its ends. Cen-Tec offers a 1.25-inch static-dissipative Quick Click hose with multi-brand tool adapters in 10-foot (part 95567) and 16-foot (part 95578) lengths.[4] "Static dissipative" is Cen-Tec's description of the hose material. It is not a safety rating, and we make no fire or shock claim for it. Cen-Tec's listing does not state the cuff's outside diameter, so still check your vac inlet.

Steps

  1. Measure the tank opening: inside diameter, and whether it tapers or locks.
  2. Check that your hose is threaded crushproof hose, not a blow-molded stock hose.
  3. Pick the cuff whose stated tank end matches your opening, or a ready-made hose kit.
  4. If no stated size matches, ask the vac maker before you buy.

Choose the 10 ft kit (95567): a 1-1/4 in static-dissipative Quick Click hose with multi-brand tool adapters.

More on choosing

Cen-Tec's listing does not state the tank cuff's outside diameter, so compare it with your vac inlet before you buy. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or Cen-Tec Systems.

Questions

How do I connect a small hose to my shop vac?

Use a tank-end cuff whose outside diameter matches your vac's inlet and whose other end matches your hose. Cen-Tec's 42324, for example, threads onto 1.25-inch spiral hose and ends in a 2.25-inch OD press fit.[1]

Will a Cen-Tec cuff fit the hose that came with my vac?

Probably not. Cen-Tec says its 41125 and 40751 threaded fittings fit 1-1/4-inch threaded crushproof hose and are not compatible with most blow-molded hoses supplied with shop vacuums.[2][3]

What size is a Milwaukee FUEL vac's tank opening?

Cen-Tec lists a 2.5-inch ID tank opening for its 62909 adapter made for Milwaukee FUEL wet-dry vacuums. It names no specific Milwaukee models, so confirm yours.[1]

Is a 1-1/4-inch hose good for floor cleaning?

No source in our register measures that, so we keep this page to fit. Many owners keep their vac's larger stock hose for floors and use a small hose on tool ports.
