Questions and answers

Short answers to the questions readers ask most. Each one links to the page that explains it in full, with sources.

Ankle straps and cuffs

Do ankle straps fit all ankle sizes?

No maker in our sources shows that. Body-Solid calls the NAS3 "One Size Fits All" and DMoose says "one size fits most", but neither publishes a circumference range. More in Ankle straps and cuffs

Do I need one or two ankle straps?

One works for single-leg moves on one cable; two suit both cables of a trainer. DMoose sells Single and Pair variants, so pick the one you mean. More in Ankle straps and cuffs

What clips an ankle strap to a cable?

A carabiner through the strap's D-ring. elitefts and MakeIt both list ankle cuffs among their carabiners' uses; see will my carabiner fit the attachment. More in Ankle straps and cuffs

Can I wear ankle straps on my wrists?

Body-Solid says its NAS3 can be worn on the ankles or wrists. Other makers in our sources do not say so, so follow each maker's stated use. More in Ankle straps and cuffs

Do ankle straps fit large or small ankles?

No maker in our sources publishes a wearable range. DMoose says 'one size fits most' and Body-Solid says 'One Size Fits All' for the NAS3, with no circumference figures, so treat sizing as the maker's claim. More in Ankle straps for cable machines: closure, padding, D-rings and sizing

Do I need one ankle strap or two?

One is enough for single-leg cable work on one pulley. Two let you switch legs without moving the strap, or work both sides on a two-pulley machine. DMoose sells its strap as a single or a pair, so check which variant you order. More in Ankle straps for cable machines: closure, padding, D-rings and sizing

Can ankle straps be worn on the wrists?

Body-Solid says its NAS3 can be worn on the ankles or wrists and attaches to a low pulley. Other makers in our sources do not say, so follow your strap's own instructions. More in Ankle straps for cable machines: closure, padding, D-rings and sizing

Do ankle straps come with a carabiner?

Usually it is not stated. DMoose and Body-Solid do not say whether one is included, so plan to buy one. Carabiners from elitefts and MakeIt are listed for cable work including cuffs. More in Ankle straps for cable machines: closure, padding, D-rings and sizing

Will these fit my ankles?

No maker here publishes a circumference range. DMoose says "one size fits most" and Body-Solid says "One Size Fits All" for its NAS3; both are the makers' claims, not measured fits. More in Ankle straps with published construction and D-rings

What do I clip them with?

A carabiner through the D-ring. elitefts and MakeIt list ankle straps or cuffs among their carabiners' uses; see will my carabiner fit the attachment. More in Ankle straps with published construction and D-rings

Can I wear these on my wrists?

None of these makers says so. Body-Solid says its NAS3 can be worn on the ankles or wrists, but that is NAS3's own statement. More in Ankle straps with published construction and D-rings

Cable bars

What lat bar length do I need?

Compare the measure the maker gives. REP lists 29 inches between handles on its neutral-grip lat bar but no overall length, while American Barbell gives 21 inches overall for its straight bar. See lat bar length vs grip spacing. More in Cable bars

Does grip width matter on lat pulldowns?

In one 2014 study of fifteen men, narrow and medium grips allowed slightly heavier 6-repetition-maximum loads than a wide grip, and overall latissimus dorsi activity was similar across the three widths. More in Cable bars

What is a revolving bar?

A bar whose grip or hanger turns as you pull. American Barbell describes its Revolving Straight Bar as a multi-axis revolving swivel design that attaches by an eye-bolt fastener, without saying which part rotates. More in Cable bars

Do cable bars come with a carabiner?

Not always. REP says its neutral-grip lat bar does not come with one, while Bells of Steel includes two carabiners with its D-Handle Bar. More in Cable bars

How long should a lat pulldown bar be?

Long enough for the grip you want and short enough to clear your machine's uprights and pulley path. No standard length exists; check the overall length the maker lists against the space on your machine. More in Lat bar length vs grip spacing and grip diameter

What is the difference between bar length and grip spacing?

Overall length is end to end. Grip spacing is the distance between where your hands go. REP's Neutral Grip Lat Bar, for example, lists 29 inches between handles but no overall length, and does not say how the 29 inches is measured. More in Lat bar length vs grip spacing and grip diameter

What grip diameter do lat bars have?

The makers we read list about 25 to 28 mm: REP gives 28 mm handles on a 26 mm bar for its Neutral Grip Lat Bar, and American Barbell gives a 25.4 mm grip for its revolving straight bar. More in Lat bar length vs grip spacing and grip diameter

Does a lat bar come with a carabiner?

Some do not. REP states that its Neutral Grip Lat Bar comes without one, while Bells of Steel includes two carabiners with its D-Handle Bar. More in Lat bar length vs grip spacing and grip diameter

Is a wide-grip lat pulldown better?

Not in the one study we found. In a 2014 study of 15 men, overall lat EMG was similar at 1, 1.5 and 2 times shoulder width, and the narrow and medium grips allowed slightly heavier 6-rep loads than the wide grip. More in Lat pulldown grip width and attachments: what one study found

Does a neutral grip work the lats differently?

The 2014 study used a pronated grip only, so it does not answer that. We found no study in our sources comparing neutral and pronated grips on the lat pulldown. More in Lat pulldown grip width and attachments: what one study found

Which attachment gives a close grip?

A close-grip handle or a double D handle. MAG, for example, lists close-grip models in neutral, pronate and supinate versions. A multi-grip bar or a bar with handle holes lets you set several widths on one attachment. More in Lat pulldown grip width and attachments: what one study found

Does EMG show which grip builds more muscle?

No. A 2018 review concluded that surface EMG measures excitation, not force, and has not been validated as a predictor of long-term strength or muscle growth. More in Lat pulldown grip width and attachments: what one study found

What is a revolving cable bar?

A bar that can turn relative to its connector, so it rotates as your wrists move instead of twisting the cable. American Barbell calls its bar a multi-axis revolving swivel design but does not say which part rotates. More in Straight and revolving cable bars: length, grip and connection

How do I attach a two-hook curl bar?

A dual-hook bar connects at two points, usually to two cable ends or to the two ends of a cable yoke. Inspire includes a dual-hook curl bar with the FTX, which runs two cables; follow your machine maker's instructions for where each hook goes. More in Straight and revolving cable bars: length, grip and connection

How long is a straight cable bar?

It varies. American Barbell lists its Revolving Straight Bar at 21 inches. Many listings give only a nominal length in the title, so check whether it is the overall length. More in Straight and revolving cable bars: length, grip and connection

Does an 880 lb set rating cover the straight bar?

Not necessarily. Yes4All's set listing claims 880 lb for the set without saying which component or test conditions it covers. More in Straight and revolving cable bars: length, grip and connection

What is the difference between a V-bar and a row handle?

A triceps V-bar is a short bar bent into a shallow V with the grips angled down, made for pushdowns. A close-grip row handle holds two grips close together, often parallel, for rows and close pulldowns. Sellers use 'V bar' for both, so go by the shape. More in Triceps V-bar vs close-grip row handle

Does a swivel V-grip matter?

A swivel lets the grips turn relative to the connector. Rogue's Rotating V-Grip has a 360-degree swivel with bronze bushings at its center. Whether you prefer a swivel or a fixed handle is a feel choice; we found no study that compares them. More in Triceps V-bar vs close-grip row handle

Can one handle do rows and pushdowns?

Often, yes. A close-grip handle can be pushed down as well as pulled, and a V-bar can be used for close rows. The grip angle will feel different, so try the movement light first. More in Triceps V-bar vs close-grip row handle

How wide is a V-grip?

It varies and is often unpublished. Rogue states a 14.4-inch width for its Rotating V-Grip but does not list the grip spacing. More in Triceps V-bar vs close-grip row handle

Is bar length the same as grip spacing?

No. REP gives 29 inches between handles for its neutral-grip lat bar but no overall length, so check which measure a maker gives. See lat bar length vs grip spacing. More in Lat and row bars with published dimensions

Do these bars come with a carabiner?

REP says its 48 in bar does not, and Synergee and Titan do not state that one is included. Plan to buy a carabiner that fits your cable end; REP says its attachments use a standard carabiner-style connection. More in Lat and row bars with published dimensions

Will a narrower bar let me lift more?

In one 2014 study of fifteen men, narrow and medium grips allowed slightly heavier 6-repetition-maximum loads than a wide grip. That is one small study, not a reason to rank bars. More in Lat and row bars with published dimensions

Carabiners and connectors

What carabiner do I need for a cable machine?

One whose body fits through your cable end and attachment eyelet, with a gate that closes fully over both. REP says its attachments use a standard carabiner-style connection and suggests confirming size for specialty connectors. See will my carabiner fit the attachment. More in Carabiners and connectors

Is 12 kN enough for a cable machine?

12 kN is a breaking strength, not a working load. MakeIt states 12 kN for its carabiner and itself says the figure must not be confused with a recommended working load, so it cannot be turned into a gym weight. More in Carabiners and connectors

Can I add an extension chain?

Only where your machine's maker lists one. Bodycraft names its HFT Pro, RFT Pro, DFT and XFT trainers and its power racks for its 21-inch chain, and states no load rating. See cable extension chains and snap links. More in Carabiners and connectors

Should the carabiner lock?

Petzl, writing about climbing gear, describes locking as a trade-off of security against ease of use, with a secure lock reducing the chance of accidental opening. Whatever the gate, it must close fully over the eyelet. More in Carabiners and connectors

Can I add an extension chain to my cable machine?

Only where the machine or chain maker lists it for your model. Bodycraft lists its 21-inch chain for its HFT Pro, RFT Pro, DFT and XFT trainers and its power racks, and makers such as Body-Solid and Precor warn against accessories they do not recommend. More in Cable extension chains and snap links: what makers list

Does an extension chain have a weight rating?

Not always. Bodycraft states no load rating for its 21-inch chain, and Body-Solid's SPRFT parts list gives none for its steel chain or snap link. Ask the maker before relying on one. More in Cable extension chains and snap links: what makers list

What is a snap link?

A connector with a spring gate used to join parts, such as a cable end to an attachment. Body-Solid's SPRFT manual lists a snap link as its own part, separate from the steel chain. More in Cable extension chains and snap links: what makers list

Can I use a longer chain to reach a higher or lower position?

Only the chain and length your machine's maker lists. Precor warns against modifying equipment or using accessory attachments it does not recommend, so ask your maker rather than extending a cable yourself. More in Cable extension chains and snap links: what makers list

Should I use a locking carabiner on a cable machine?

No gym maker in our sources requires one. Petzl describes the lock as a trade-off between security and ease of use, saying a secure lock reduces the chance of accidental opening; compare the gates documented for the carabiners you are considering. More in Carabiner gates and loading direction: what connector makers say

What does 12 kN mean for my cable machine?

It is a breaking strength, not a weight you can lift. MakeIt states 12 kN for its gym carabiner and says it must not be confused with a recommended working load. More in Carabiner gates and loading direction: what connector makers say

Is it bad if the carabiner loads on its gate?

Petzl's connector instructions say any external pressure on the gate is dangerous and that strength is greatly reduced if the gate is open. Reposition so the load sits on the spine end with the gate closed. More in Carabiner gates and loading direction: what connector makers say

Can I work out a safe gym load from a carabiner's breaking strength?

No. Design factors like those Certex describes are industrial rules for rope and rigging, not gym gear. Use only a working load or rating the carabiner's maker states for your use. More in Carabiner gates and loading direction: what connector makers say

What size carabiner do I need for a cable machine?

One whose gate opens wide enough for both the cable end and your attachment's eyelet and closes fully over them. Published gym carabiner sizes range from MakeIt's 8.0 x 4.6 cm to elitefts' 3 in tall carabiner, so measure your eyelets first. More in Will my carabiner fit the attachment? Eyelet, gate and body size

Does any carabiner work with a cable attachment?

No. REP says its attachments use a standard carabiner-style connection, but advises confirming carabiner size and pulley spacing if specialty connectors are used. More in Will my carabiner fit the attachment? Eyelet, gate and body size

My carabiner gate will not close over the eyelet. Is that OK?

No. A gate that cannot close is not a usable connection. Use a carabiner that fits; our gate and loading guide explains why an open gate matters. More in Will my carabiner fit the attachment? Eyelet, gate and body size

Do cable attachments come with a carabiner?

Often not. REP says its Pro Series Neutral Grip Lat Bar and its D-handle come without one, and Rogue and Lattice ship their loading pins without one; Golden Grip includes one with its pin. More in Will my carabiner fit the attachment? Eyelet, gate and body size

Why are the gym-sold carabiners not on this list?

They are not approved in our catalog, and their pages leave gaps. Power Systems' listing states a 550 lb load without saying what kind, and elitefts publishes no rating. More in Cable carabiners with published dimensions

How do I turn 50 kN into pounds I can lift?

You do not. A kN breaking strength is the load at which a part fails in a test, not a working load; MakeIt says the same of its own 12 kN figure. Use a working load limit where the maker states one. More in Cable carabiners with published dimensions

Does the carabiner need to lock?

Petzl, writing about climbing gear, describes locking as security against ease of use. Whatever the gate, it must close fully over the eyelet; see carabiner gates and loading direction. More in Cable carabiners with published dimensions

Handles and ropes

What D-handle grip diameter is common?

Makers differ. REP lists 32 mm for its steel D-handle, 34 mm for urethane and 25 mm for its Pro Series, and Rogue uses 32 mm handles on its Rotating V-Grip. More in Handles and ropes

Is a rope better than a bar for triceps?

No study we found shows it. The ACE report gives rope and bar figures but no statistical test between them, and a 2016 handle study found no significant difference in triceps activity between handle types. More in Handles and ropes

How long is a triceps rope?

Check whether the maker gives overall or doubled length. Rogue lists 28 inches total including the ends and about 11.5 inches doubled; the Yes4All set listing describes a 27-inch rope. More in Handles and ropes

Are handles sold in pairs?

Some are. REP sells its D-handle singly or in pairs, and PRIME lists its RO-T8 Handles as a pair. Check the variant before you order. More in Handles and ropes

Which cable attachments do I need first?

Start from the movements you plan to do. REP's own suggestion for most home gyms is a triceps rope, a pair of D-handles and one lat bar, which covers pushdowns, single-arm work and pulldowns. Check first what your machine already includes. More in A small cable attachment set: what to start with

Is a cable attachment set worth it?

It can be if you will use every piece. A set such as Yes4All's four-piece kit covers a rope, a double D handle, a straight bar and a V bar, but pieces you never use are no saving, and the set's load figure is not stated per piece. More in A small cable attachment set: what to start with

Does an 880 lb set rating apply to each piece?

The listing does not say. Yes4All's set listing claims 880 lb without stating which component or test conditions the figure covers, so treat it as the seller's claim, not a rating for every piece. More in A small cable attachment set: what to start with

Do cable attachments come with a carabiner?

Often not. REP states that its D-handle and its Neutral Grip Lat Bar come without one, so plan to buy a carabiner that fits your cable end. More in A small cable attachment set: what to start with

What grip diameter should a D-handle have?

Makers range from about 25 mm to 34 mm: REP lists 25 mm, 32 mm and 34 mm versions, and Rogue's V-grip handles are 32 mm. We found no study that ranks one diameter above another, so choose by your hand size and comfort. More in D-handles: steel, urethane and strap versions compared by spec

Are D-handles sold in pairs?

It depends on the listing. REP sells its D-handle singly or in pairs, while PRIME lists its RO-T8 handles as a pair under one SKU. Check the unit before you compare listings. More in D-handles: steel, urethane and strap versions compared by spec

Do D-handles come with a carabiner?

Not always. REP states that a carabiner is not included with its D-handle, and PRIME's RO-T8 page does not say either way. More in D-handles: steel, urethane and strap versions compared by spec

Do D-handles have a load rating?

REP publishes none for its D-handles, and MAG and PRIME publish none for their handles. Where no rating is published, none can be quoted. More in D-handles: steel, urethane and strap versions compared by spec

Is a rope better than a bar for triceps?

The studies we found do not show that. An ACE report listed rope pushdowns at about 74% and bar pushdowns at about 67% of triangle push-up triceps activity, but reported no test showing the rope differs from the bar. More in Rope vs bar for triceps pushdowns: what the studies measured

Does a handle shape change triceps activation?

In a 2016 study comparing a standard handle with two ball handles, triceps activity did not differ significantly between handles. Forearm muscle activity patterns did change with the handle. More in Rope vs bar for triceps pushdowns: what the studies measured

What does EMG measure?

Surface EMG amplitude measures muscle excitation, not force. A 2018 review concluded it has not been validated as a predictor of long-term strength or muscle growth. More in Rope vs bar for triceps pushdowns: what the studies measured

So which should I buy for pushdowns?

Choose by comfort and by what connects to your cable. If a rope or a bar feels better in your hands and wrists, that is a fair reason, since the studies do not separate them for the triceps. More in Rope vs bar for triceps pushdowns: what the studies measured

What length triceps rope should I get?

No length is proven better. Listings commonly sit around 27 to 28 inches overall: Rogue lists 28 inches and a Yes4All set lists a 27-inch rope. A longer rope hangs lower and gives the hands more room to spread; pick by your arm length and the space under your pulley. More in Triceps rope length: overall vs doubled length

What does doubled length mean?

A triceps rope hangs folded in half from its center, so each side is roughly half the total. Rogue lists its rope at 28 inches overall and about 11.5 inches once doubled. More in Triceps rope length: overall vs doubled length

Do triceps ropes come with a carabiner?

Some do and some do not. Rogue's rope page does not say, so check each listing and plan to buy a carabiner if none is mentioned. More in Triceps rope length: overall vs doubled length

Does my cable machine already include a rope?

Check its contents list. Inspire, for example, includes a triceps rope with the FTX functional trainer. More in Triceps rope length: overall vs doubled length

Is rope length measured overall or doubled?

It depends on the maker. Rogue gives both for its rope: 28 inches total including the ends, and about 11.5 inches doubled. Many listings give one number without saying which; see triceps rope length explained. More in D-handles and triceps ropes with published sizes

Do D-handles come with a carabiner?

Often not. REP says its D-handle is sold without one. Check each listing, and plan to buy a carabiner that fits your cable end. More in D-handles and triceps ropes with published sizes

Is a rope better than a bar for triceps?

No study we found shows it. The ACE report gives rope and bar figures but no statistical test between them, and a 2016 study found no significant difference in triceps activity between handle types. More in D-handles and triceps ropes with published sizes

Loading pins

Which loading pin fits Olympic plates?

One whose maker names the 2-inch bore or an Olympic variant, such as Golden Grip's 50 mm (2-inch) version. Lattice lists a 1-inch pin it says works with both 1-inch and 2-inch plates. See 1-inch vs 2-inch loading pins. More in Loading pins

How much weight can a loading pin hold?

Only what its maker states for that variant. Lattice states 130 kg (287 lb), Arm Kombat 400 lb for its 1-inch pin, and Golden Grip 150 kg (25 mm) or 180 kg (50 mm). Rogue publishes no rating for its pin. More in Loading pins

Do I need a strap or a rigid pin?

Either works when its maker lists it for your setup. Spud's strap pins come in set strap lengths and are made for Spud's Econo Pulley Systems. Compare them in strap vs rigid loading pins. More in Loading pins

Does a loading pin come with a carabiner?

Some do. Arm Kombat and Golden Grip say theirs come with a carabiner; Rogue says its strap and carabiner are not included. More in Loading pins

Will standard plates fit an Olympic loading pin?

Standard plates have a 1 in hole, which is smaller than an Olympic pin made for 2 in plates, so they will not go on. Buy a pin whose maker lists 1 in plates, such as Golden Grip's 25 mm variant. More in 1-inch vs 2-inch loading pins: why the shaft is not the plate hole

Why is my Olympic pin smaller than 2 inches?

The 2 in figure names the plate hole, which is 50.8 mm. GymPin, for example, makes the plate end of its Original GymPin 49.5 mm in diameter for 2 in Olympic plates. More in 1-inch vs 2-inch loading pins: why the shaft is not the plate hole

Can 2 inch plates go on a 1 inch pin?

Only where the maker says so. Lattice says its 1 in pin is compatible with 1 in and 2 in plates, and reviews on its page note Olympic plates may move around on it. More in 1-inch vs 2-inch loading pins: why the shaft is not the plate hole

Is Rogue's Loading Pin an Olympic pin?

Rogue lists a 1.91 in diameter and does not name a plate family on its page, so check with Rogue for your plates. More in 1-inch vs 2-inch loading pins: why the shaft is not the plate hole

Which loading pin fits Olympic plates?

One whose maker lists 2 in plates. Golden Grip sells a 50 mm (2 in) variant and Lattice says its 1 in pin is compatible with 1 in and 2 in plates, though 2 in plates may move around on it. More in Choose a loading pin for the plates you own

How many plates fit on a loading pin?

Most makers we read do not publish a usable loading length, so we cannot say. Lattice lists dimensions of 10 x 10 x 28 cm, but it does not say whether 28 cm is the loadable part. More in Choose a loading pin for the plates you own

Do loading pins come with a carabiner?

Some do. Arm Kombat and Golden Grip include one; Rogue and Lattice say theirs is not included. More in Choose a loading pin for the plates you own

What is the weight limit of a loading pin?

Only what its maker states, for that model or variant. Lattice states 130 kg (287 lb), Arm Kombat 400 lb, and Golden Grip 150 kg for its 25 mm pin and 180 kg for its 50 mm pin; Rogue publishes no rating. More in Choose a loading pin for the plates you own

Which is better for a rack pulley, a strap pin or a rigid pin?

We found no comparative data, so compare the documented fields: plate family, length, how it connects and the maker's rating. Spud's strap pins are made for Spud's own Econo pulley systems. More in Strap loading pin vs rigid loading pin

Does a strap loading pin fit any pulley?

Spud says its strap loading pins are for use with Spud Inc. Econo Pulley Systems, linked with the attached ring. It does not say they are approved for other pulleys, so ask Spud before using one elsewhere. More in Strap loading pin vs rigid loading pin

What is the weight limit of a strap loading pin?

Spud states its Olympic strap loading pin can be loaded with up to 550 lb of Olympic plate weight. The 1 in version's page repeats the same sentence, so confirm that version's rating with Spud. More in Strap loading pin vs rigid loading pin

What length strap do I need?

Spud describes its 18 in Olympic strap for tall racks or ceiling mounts and the 12 in for shorter racks. The 1 in strap pin's page conflicts on length (11 or 17 in vs 12 or 18 in), so confirm with Spud. More in Strap loading pin vs rigid loading pin

Rack-mount pulley systems

Will a rack pulley fit any power rack?

No. Each maker lists the racks it fits: Rogue's Monster Slinger fits only Monster Rack 2.0 models and excludes flat-foot, fold-back and wall-mount racks. Check the maker's list for your exact rack and base, as in identify your rack before buying a pulley. More in Rack-mount pulley systems

Is 75 mm the same as 3x3?

Not exactly. Fringe Sport describes metric "3x3" tubing as about 75 mm (2.95 in) per side and true 3x3 as 3 in, and says its Sidewing fits the first but not the second. Three inches is exactly 76.2 mm. More in Rack-mount pulley systems

Do rack pulleys come with a cable and loading pin?

It depends on the kit. Spud sells its Super Econo Pulley with the cable sold separately, while Valor lists an 85-inch cable and a 14-inch plate holder with the RG-26. Read the maker's contents list, and see what comes in a rack pulley kit. More in Rack-mount pulley systems

What weight can a rack pulley take?

Only what its maker states, in the maker's scope. Valor states 500 lb for the RG-26, Titan lists a 300 lb plate capacity for its T-3/X-3 lat tower, and Fringe's 200 lb applies only with its Gibbon Arms. Many makers publish no figure at all. More in Rack-mount pulley systems

Is my 3x3 rack 75 mm or 76.2 mm?

It depends on the rack. Fringe Sport describes metric 3x3 tubing as about 75 mm (2.95 in) per side and true 3x3 as 3 in per side, and 3 in is exactly 76.2 mm. Measure the outside width of one upright. More in 2x2, 2x3 and 3x3 vs metric uprights for pulley mounts

Will a 75 mm pulley mount fit a 3x3 rack?

Only if the maker says so for your tube. Fringe says its Sidewing Bottom Pulley fits metric 75 x 75 mm tubing sold as 3x3 but will not fit true 3x3 racks. More in 2x2, 2x3 and 3x3 vs metric uprights for pulley mounts

Is 50 mm the same as 2x2?

Not exactly. Two inches is 50.8 mm. SYL Fitness labels its 50 mm variant "2x2", but that is a nominal label, not an exact conversion. More in 2x2, 2x3 and 3x3 vs metric uprights for pulley mounts

How do I measure my upright?

Measure across the outside of one upright, flat side to flat side, in millimeters and inches. Fringe advises measuring the outside width of one upright if you are unsure which 3x3 you have. More in 2x2, 2x3 and 3x3 vs metric uprights for pulley mounts

How long a cable do I need for a 7 ft rack?

Use the length your pulley maker offers for that height. Spud says its Super Econo Pulley's 75 in cable suits 6 to 7 ft racks, while Surplus cuts its cable to the rack height you give in the order notes. More in Cable length for a rack pulley: rack height and the maker's options

Can I get a custom-length cable?

Some makers offer one. Spud says custom lengths are available for an extra fee and can take up to two weeks to fabricate. More in Cable length for a rack pulley: rack height and the maker's options

Is a longer cable always better?

No. The right length is the one the maker built for your pulley and rack height; Rogue, for example, sells separate versions for 90, 100 and 108 in rack heights. More in Cable length for a rack pulley: rack height and the maker's options

Can I shorten or splice a cable myself?

No. Order the maker's cable in the length it offers, or ask the maker for a custom length. More in Cable length for a rack pulley: rack height and the maker's options

What is cable travel?

Cable travel is how far the handle can move, from the pulley to the end of its pull. REP publishes travel figures for its machines, such as 6 to 8 ft for the Ares 2.0 depending on configuration. More in Cable travel vs cable length, and how ratio changes it

Why does a 2:1 machine have more travel?

REP explains that with a 2:1 ratio the weight travels half the distance of the cable, so the handle can move further for the same stack movement, and 20 lb of stack feels like 10 lb. More in Cable travel vs cable length, and how ratio changes it

Can I swap the top and bottom cables on my machine?

No. Upper and lower cables are different parts: Body-Solid's SPRFT manual lists a 9300 mm top cable and a 5875 mm low cable routed over different pulleys. Order the maker's part for each position. More in Cable travel vs cable length, and how ratio changes it

Is a longer cable the same as more travel?

Not necessarily. Travel depends on the machine's layout and ratio as well as the cable, which is why REP publishes travel per configuration and rack height. More in Cable travel vs cable length, and how ratio changes it

How often should I replace a gym cable?

As your machine's maker states. Decathlon says to change its weight training pulley's cable at least once a year as a wearing part, but that rule is for its product; Body-Solid's SPRFT manual gives no replacement interval. More in Gym cable inspection and replacement parts: follow the maker

Can I use a generic replacement cable?

Use the maker's part. Body-Solid says to use only Body-Solid replacement parts, and Bowflex says to use only genuine Nautilus replacement parts and hardware. More in Gym cable inspection and replacement parts: follow the maker

What is the ball on the end of my cable?

On the Bowflex Xtreme 2 SE it is the Cable End Stop Ball. The assembly manual says its core fits over the cable ferrule so the cable cannot slip back through the pulleys. More in Gym cable inspection and replacement parts: follow the maker

What do I do if the cable coating is cracked?

Stop using the machine and contact the maker. Precor says equipment needing service should be kept out of use until repaired, and Inspire says to repair or replace damaged parts at the first sign of a problem. More in Gym cable inspection and replacement parts: follow the maker

Will a pulley made for my rack's brand fit my rack?

Not automatically. Rogue's Monster Slinger fits only Monster Rack 2.0 models and lists exclusions, and the Monster Lite Slinger has its own host list, so check the exact model on the pulley maker's list. More in Identify your rack before buying a pulley

Where do I find my rack's model and year?

Use your order confirmation, invoice or the rack's manual, and note the order date. Revisions matter: Fringe excludes Garage Series racks ordered June to October 2020, and Titan's T-3/X-3 lat tower excludes racks bought before October 2021. More in Identify your rack before buying a pulley

What if my rack is not on the pulley maker's list?

Ask the pulley maker before you buy, and send them your rack model, year, upright size and hole size. Do not assume a rack fits because it looks similar to a listed one. More in Identify your rack before buying a pulley

Do I need to bolt my rack down to add a pulley?

Follow what the pulley maker states. Rogue says the rack must be secured to the floor for the Monster Slinger and fastened to the floor for the Monster Lite Slinger; your rack's and pulley's manuals cover how. More in Identify your rack before buying a pulley

Will a 1 in pulley mount work on a 5/8 in rack?

Only if its maker lists 5/8 in holes. Rogue's Monster Slinger uses 1 in bolt assemblies and the Monster Lite Slinger uses 5/8 in, so the two are not interchangeable. More in Pulley mount hole sizes: 5/8 in, 1 in and 1/2 in

What size are my rack's holes?

Check your rack maker's specs or manual. REP, for example, says its 4000 Series racks use 5/8 in pinholes and its 5000 Series uses 1 in pinholes. More in Pulley mount hole sizes: 5/8 in, 1 in and 1/2 in

Can I use different bolts to make a pulley mount fit?

Use only the hardware the maker supplies or states. Valor designs the RG-26's two M12 x 110 bolts for 1/2 in frame holes and does not recommend other hole sizes unless the buyer supplies compatible hardware; ask Valor what that means for your rack. More in Pulley mount hole sizes: 5/8 in, 1 in and 1/2 in

How many millimeters is 5/8 inch?

Exactly 15.875 mm, since one inch is exactly 25.4 mm. That is a conversion, not a fit tolerance. More in Pulley mount hole sizes: 5/8 in, 1 in and 1/2 in

Can I add a pulley to a folding rack?

Check the pulley maker's list first. Rogue says neither of its Slingers is compatible with fold-back racks; that applies to Rogue's products, so ask other makers about yours. More in Pulleys on folding, flat-foot and wall-mounted racks

Why does a flat-foot rack matter for a cable attachment?

Several makers exclude flat-foot racks by name: Rogue's Monster Slinger excludes the RM-390F Flat Foot, Titan's T-3/X-3 lat tower excludes Flat Foot racks, and REP's Ares 2.0 is not compatible with flat-footed racks. The makers' pages state the exclusion; they do not all explain why. More in Pulleys on folding, flat-foot and wall-mounted racks

Can I mount a cable tower on drywall?

Not according to the makers we read. MIKOLO says the G3 should mount into wood studs or concrete, not drywall alone, and Valor says wall mounting the RG-26 needs extra hardware into cement or studs, never drywall alone. More in Pulleys on folding, flat-foot and wall-mounted racks

Does my rack need to be bolted down for a rack pulley?

Do what the pulley maker states. Rogue says the rack must be secured to the floor for the Monster Slinger and fastened to the floor for the Monster Lite Slinger. More in Pulleys on folding, flat-foot and wall-mounted racks

Does a rack pulley come with a cable?

Some do and some do not. Fringe's Sidewing ships with a pre-threaded cable, while Spud sells the Super Econo Pulley as pulley only, with the cable sold separately. More in What comes in a rack pulley kit (and what does not)

Do I need to buy a loading pin separately?

Often, yes, unless the kit includes plate sleeves or a plate holder. Rogue's Loading Pin itself ships without a strap or carabiner, so check the contents line of each part. More in What comes in a rack pulley kit (and what does not)

Are handles included with a rack pulley?

It varies. Titan's T-3/X-3 lat tower includes a lat bar and a low row handle, Bells of Steel's Cable Tower includes two nylon handles, and Ironmaster sells handles separately for its Cable Tower V2. More in What comes in a rack pulley kit (and what does not)

If a part is not listed, is it missing from the box?

Not necessarily. "Not listed" means the maker's page does not say. Ask the maker before you order around it. More in What comes in a rack pulley kit (and what does not)

Will these fit a rack from another brand?

Titan names only its own racks for these attachments, so we do not list them for any other rack. For other racks, find a mount whose maker lists your rack; see identify your rack before buying a pulley. More in Rack pulleys with a stated rack fit and rating

Why are only Titan products on this list?

They are the approved rack attachments whose maker names both the racks they fit and a load figure. Other mounts in our research either lack an approved listing or state no rating. More in Rack pulleys with a stated rack fit and rating

Does the 300 lb rating cover the whole rack?

No. Titan lists 300 lb as the lat tower's weight plate capacity; it says nothing about the rack or your attachments. See what a cable attachment load rating covers. More in Rack pulleys with a stated rack fit and rating

Is 75 mm the same as 3x3?

No. Three inches is exactly 76.2 mm, and Fringe Sport says its Sidewing fits metric 75 mm "3x3" tubing but not true 3x3 racks. More in Rack upright size finder

Is a 50 mm upright the same as 2x2?

Close, but not equal: 2 inches is exactly 50.8 mm. SYL labels its 50 mm variant "2x2", which is a variant name, not a conversion. More in Rack upright size finder

Where do I measure?

Across the outside of one upright, on a flat face, as Fringe Sport advises. Then measure the hole diameter. More in Rack upright size finder

Ratings and buying

Is a cable attachment's rating the same as the machine's?

No. A rating belongs to the product, variant and pairing its maker names. GymPin says a stronger pin does not raise the machine's rating, and Fringe's 200 lb applies only with its Gibbon Arms. More in Ratings and buying

Are cable attachments on AliExpress genuine?

Some brands say their AliExpress listings are not. MIKOLO names its own sites and authorized platforms such as Amazon and Walmart, denies other resellers and flags an AliExpress listing as fake. See the buying checklist. More in Ratings and buying

Will I pay duty on a cable attachment shipped to the US or Canada?

Possibly. CBP stopped duty-free de minimis entry from all countries as of August 29, 2025, and in Canada mailed goods above CAN$20 can owe duty plus GST, PST or HST. These rules change, so recheck before you order. More in Ratings and buying

Has my cable machine been recalled?

Search the CPSC's recalls page for US recalls, and Canada's recalls and safety alerts site for Canada. See cable machine standards and recalls. More in Ratings and buying

Are cable attachments on AliExpress genuine?

Some are not, and few brands say. MIKOLO denies other resellers and flags an AliExpress listing as fake, so we treat MIKOLO offers there as unauthorized. For other brands, compare the listing with the brand's own site. More in Buying cable attachments on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check

How do I know the seller is the brand?

Check "Ships from / Sold by" on Amazon, and look for the brand's own statement of authorized platforms, as MIKOLO publishes. A store name or a listing alone does not prove authorization. More in Buying cable attachments on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check

Will I pay duty on a cable attachment?

Possibly. The US suspended duty-free de minimis entry from all countries as of August 29, 2025, and in Canada mailed goods over CAN$20 can owe duty plus GST, PST or HST. Recheck before ordering; these rules change. More in Buying cable attachments on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check

Are AliExpress returns free?

Only for items marked with a Free Returns icon, and the benefit can be used once per order. The return window depends on where the seller is. More in Buying cable attachments on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check

Is there a safety standard for cable machines?

Yes. ASTM F2216 is the standard specification for selectorized strength equipment, and ISO 20957-2:2024 sets safety requirements and test methods for stationary strength training equipment. Neither is a rating for an add-on attachment. More in Cable machine standards and recalls

How do I check if my machine was recalled?

Search the CPSC's recalls page by maker and model in the US, and the Government of Canada's recalls and safety alerts site in Canada. More in Cable machine standards and recalls

Does a US recall apply in Canada?

Not automatically. Canada's recalls site lists items from Health Canada and other federal sources, and a US recall does not always appear there, so check both. More in Cable machine standards and recalls

Were cable attachments involved in the Core Health & Fitness case?

No. The CPSC says the height-adjusting carriages on Core's Cable Cross Over and Dual Adjustable Pulley machines could loosen and fall; the penalty was for failing to report that defect. More in Cable machine standards and recalls

Is the rating on my pulley the rating of the whole setup?

No. A rating covers the product and scope its maker names: Fringe's 200 lb applies only with its Gibbon Arms. The machine, cable and other parts each have their own limits. More in What a cable attachment load rating covers

What does "max load" mean on a listing?

Whatever the listing says it covers, and often it does not say. Power Systems' carabiner listing states a 550 lb load without saying whether it is a working load or a breaking strength, and the Yes4All set's 880 lb names no component. More in What a cable attachment load rating covers

What is the difference between breaking strength and working load limit?

Breaking strength is where a part fails in a test; a working load limit is the most it should carry in use. MakeIt says its 12 kN breaking strength must not be confused with a working load. More in What a cable attachment load rating covers

Can I add the ratings of each part together?

No. Each part's figure covers only that part, and the machine's permitted load comes first. GymPin says a stronger pin does not raise a machine's rating. More in What a cable attachment load rating covers

My setup is not in the list. What should I do?

Use the maker's own product page or manual, and check the same things the finder shows: the racks it lists, exclusions, mounting, the rating and its scope, and the cable-end connector. Start with identify your rack before buying a pulley. More in Cable setup finder

Why do some fields say "Not confirmed"?

Because no maker page or manual we read states that field for that setup. We show the gap rather than guess. More in Cable setup finder

Does the rating on a setup page cover my attachments?

No. A rating covers what its maker names: Fringe's 200 lb applies only with its Gibbon Arms. Each attachment has its own figure, or none. More in Cable setup finder

Weight-stack adders

What is a stack adder pin?

A pin that goes into a hole in a weight stack and holds plates on a sleeve. GymPin's Original has a 102 mm stack end in 8 mm or 10 mm and a plate end for 2-inch Olympic plates. More in Weight-stack adders

Will a GymPin fit my machine?

Only if its stack end matches your machine's selector pin. GymPin tells buyers to measure the existing pin, because diameters vary across models and years, and warns against an 8 mm pin in a 10 mm hole. More in Weight-stack adders

Does an adder let me lift more than the stack?

It adds weight, but never raises what the machine may carry. GymPin says a stronger pin does not raise the machine's rating, and the machine's permitted load takes priority. See stack adders and machine load limits. More in Weight-stack adders

What are fractional weights?

Small plates that sit on top of a stack. Force USA's US version is a pair of 3 lb plates that split into 1.5 lb halves for its All-In-One Trainers. More in Weight-stack adders

What does a 2:1 cable ratio mean?

REP explains that with a 2:1 ratio, 20 lb of stack feels like 10 lb at the handle, and the weight travels half the distance of the cable. With 1:1, 20 lb feels like 20 lb. More in 1:1 vs 2:1 cable ratio: stack weight vs what you pull

Is 2:1 worse than 1:1?

Neither is better in general. A 2:1 machine gives lighter resistance per stack plate and longer cable travel per inch of stack movement; a 1:1 machine gives the full stack at the handle. Choose by the loads and movements you need. More in 1:1 vs 2:1 cable ratio: stack weight vs what you pull

Why does my cable machine feel lighter than the stack?

It may run at 2:1. Inspire, for example, lists the FTX's two 165 lb stacks at a 2:1 ratio, giving 82.5 lb per pulley. Check your machine's listed ratio. More in 1:1 vs 2:1 cable ratio: stack weight vs what you pull

Is a 5 lb add-on 5 lb at the handle on a 2:1 machine?

Do not assume so. Inspire sells 5 lb add-ons for the 2:1 FTX but does not say whether that is stack mass or handle resistance, so ask the maker. More in 1:1 vs 2:1 cable ratio: stack weight vs what you pull

What size is my selector pin?

Measure it. GymPin advises measuring the straight shaft of your machine's existing selector pin with calipers, because makers use different diameters across models and production years. More in 8 mm vs 10 mm selector pins: measure before buying an adder

Can I use an 8 mm pin in a 10 mm hole?

No. GymPin warns against fitting an 8 mm pin into a 10 mm hole and says to match the diameter of the machine's original selector pin. More in 8 mm vs 10 mm selector pins: measure before buying an adder

Do all machines of one brand use the same pin?

Not necessarily. GymPin's FAQ article says sizes vary within brands, giving Matrix machines as an example that use 8 mm or 10 mm depending on year. That is GymPin's guidance, so measure your own pin rather than relying on the brand. More in 8 mm vs 10 mm selector pins: measure before buying an adder

Is there a published chart of pin sizes by machine brand?

We found none we could confirm. A Body Masters selector-pin bulletin could not be read, and GymPin's brand examples are its own generalization, so we do not publish a brand-to-size table. More in 8 mm vs 10 mm selector pins: measure before buying an adder

How do I add 2.5 lb to a weight stack?

First check whether your machine maker sells add-on or fractional plates for your model. If it does not, a third-party adder such as Torque's magnetic 2.5 lb Weight Stack Adder Pin is one option, but only where your machine maker allows it and within the machine's own limits. More in Add small increments to a weight stack: maker options first

Do fractional plates fit any machine?

No. Makers state fit for their own machines: Force USA UK lists verified compatibility with five named models. Stack plates and guide rods differ, so match the add-on to your model. More in Add small increments to a weight stack: maker options first

Is a 5 lb add-on 5 lb at the handle?

Do not assume so on a 2:1 machine unless the maker says it is. Inspire sells 5 lb add-ons for the FTX, which runs at 2:1, but does not say whether 5 lb is stack mass or handle resistance. More in Add small increments to a weight stack: maker options first

Does an add-on weight raise my machine's capacity?

No. GymPin states that a stronger pin does not raise a machine's rating and that the machine's permitted load takes priority. The same logic applies to any add-on. More in Add small increments to a weight stack: maker options first

Which GymPin fits my machine?

Measure your machine's selector pin first. The Original comes in 8 mm or 10 mm, the KingPin in 10 mm only, and GymPin's FAQ article says the MiniPin is offered in both. Never fit an 8 mm pin into a 10 mm hole. More in GymPin Original vs MiniPin vs KingPin: fit and stated limits

How much weight can a GymPin hold?

GymPin's Original product page states 60 kg, and GymPin states 60 kg for the KingPin. GymPin also says its pins do not uprate a machine, so your machine's own permitted load is the real limit. More in GymPin Original vs MiniPin vs KingPin: fit and stated limits

How many plates fit on a GymPin?

GymPin's FAQ article gives approximate loading space of about 3 inches (one plate) on the MiniPin, about 6 inches (about three plates) on the Original and about 8 inches (about four plates) on the KingPin. Plate thickness changes the count. More in GymPin Original vs MiniPin vs KingPin: fit and stated limits

A reseller says the Original holds 135 lb. Is that the rating?

No. The Micro Gainz reseller listing says 'holds up to 135lbs', which differs from the 60 kg on GymPin's own product page. Use the maker's figure and your machine's limit. More in GymPin Original vs MiniPin vs KingPin: fit and stated limits

Can a stack adder overload my machine?

Yes, if the stack plus the added plates exceeds what the machine is meant to carry. GymPin says the frame, cables, pulleys and guide rods have their own limits and that the machine's permitted load takes priority. More in Stack adders and machine load limits: is a gym pin safe?

Can I use a GymPin at a commercial gym?

Only with permission. GymPin advises getting the gym owner's or the manufacturer's permission before using its pins on equipment you do not own. More in Stack adders and machine load limits: is a gym pin safe?

Does a stronger pin mean the machine can take more?

No. GymPin states that its products do not certify or uprate a machine and that a stronger pin does not raise the machine's rating. More in Stack adders and machine load limits: is a gym pin safe?

Can I use a stack adder as the selector pin?

No. Bare Steel Equipment warns not to use its stacked weight pin as a selector pin with added weight, and to verify the cable machine's weight capacity before use. More in Stack adders and machine load limits: is a gym pin safe?

Is there a safety standard for stack adder pins?

We found none. ASTM F2216 and F2277 cover the design and testing of selectorized strength equipment, not add-on pins. More in Stack adders and machine load limits: is a gym pin safe?

How do I know if I need 8 mm or 10 mm?

Measure the selector pin already in your machine. GymPin says makers use different diameters across models and production years, and to match the original pin's diameter. More in Stack adder pins with a stated pin size and limit

Does the 60 kg rating mean my machine can take 60 kg more?

No. GymPin says its products do not certify or uprate a machine and that the machine's permitted load takes priority. See stack adders and machine load limits. More in Stack adder pins with a stated pin size and limit

Can I use the adder as my selector pin?

No. Bare Steel warns never to use its stacked weight pin as a selector pin with added weight. Treat any adder the same way: the machine's own selector pin stays in place. More in Stack adder pins with a stated pin size and limit
