Cable length for a rack pulley: rack height and the maker's options

Start from the pulley maker's stated cable length or ordering route. Lengths from Spud, Surplus, Fringe, Valor, Rogue and Decathlon, and a worksheet.

Short answer

Start from the pulley maker's stated cable length or its ordering route, not a generic number. Some makers sell one length for a range of rack heights, some cut to your height, and some sell a version per rack height. A length belongs to one product, so never borrow a figure from another machine.

What makers offer

Maker and productCable length or route, as stated
Spud Super Econo Pulley75 in nylon cable for 6 to 7 ft racks; custom lengths for an extra fee, up to two weeks to make[1]
Surplus Strength UPS Low1/4 in cable cut to length from the rack height you give in the order notes[2]
Fringe Sport Sidewing52 in, or 82 in with the included extension chain[3]
Valor RG-2685 in rubber-sheathed cable[4]
Rogue Monster SlingerVersions for 90, 100 or 108 in rack heights; a weight-stack version must match the unit height[5]
Decathlon weight training pulley1950 mm ± 50 mm, 5 mm diameter; hangs from a support between 1.80 and 2.50 m high[6]

Three ordering routes show up in that table: a fixed length for a height range (Spud, Valor), a length per rack height (Rogue) and a cable cut to your height (Surplus). Fringe adds a fourth: a fixed cable plus an extension chain.

Lengths belong to one product

A cable length is set for one pulley layout. Body-Solid's manual for its Functional Trainer Kit for the SPR1000 lists the top cable at 9300 mm and the low cable at 5875 mm.[7] Those figures apply to that kit only. They tell you nothing about a rack pulley from another maker, or even about a different Body-Solid machine.

The same holds for Decathlon. Its 1950 mm cable is specified for its own pulley, hung within its stated height range.[6]

A worksheet before you order

Write these down, then match them to the maker's options:

  1. Rack height, from the rack maker's specs or your own tape measure.
  2. Where the pulley mounts, top crossmember or a set height on the upright, as the pulley maker shows.
  3. The maker's length or route for that height, from the table above or the maker's page.
  4. Whether a chain or strap is included, as with Fringe's extension chain.[3]
  5. Your rack's model, in case the maker cuts or sizes the cable for you.

If your rack height falls between the maker's options, ask the maker which version it recommends.

Is a longer cable better?

No. Extra length is not a feature on its own. Rogue sells separate units for 90, 100 and 108 in rack heights, and says a weight-stack version must match the unit height.[5] Buy the length the maker pairs with your rack.

Do not shorten, splice or knot a cable, and do not make your own. If the length is wrong, contact the maker for its part or a custom length.

Kits that size the cable for you

A tower sold for one rack line ships with its own pulley system, so there is no separate cable to order. Titan lists a nylon pulley system among the parts of its T-3/X-3 tower and a 300 lb weight plate capacity; it does not state that tower's cable length.[8]

Picks that fit2 products

Choose the Short lat tower (SKU 401035) only for a Titan T-3 or X-3 Series bolt-down rack bought in or after October 2021, not a Flat Foot rack.

More on choosing

Choose the T-2 tower (71 in) only for a Titan T-2 Series rack, after checking the purchase-date limit on Titan's page. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' is Amazon.com or Titan.

Questions

How long a cable do I need for a 7 ft rack?

Use the length your pulley maker offers for that height. Spud says its Super Econo Pulley's 75 in cable suits 6 to 7 ft racks, while Surplus cuts its cable to the rack height you give in the order notes.[1][2]

Can I get a custom-length cable?

Some makers offer one. Spud says custom lengths are available for an extra fee and can take up to two weeks to fabricate.[1]

Is a longer cable always better?

No. The right length is the one the maker built for your pulley and rack height; Rogue, for example, sells separate versions for 90, 100 and 108 in rack heights.[5]

Can I shorten or splice a cable myself?

No. Order the maker's cable in the length it offers, or ask the maker for a custom length.
