Short answer
Choose D-handles and a triceps rope by the sizes their makers publish: single or pair, rigid or strap, grip diameter, and for ropes whether the length is overall or doubled. REP sells its D-handle singly or in pairs, in 32 mm steel, 34 mm urethane and 25 mm Pro Series versions, without a carabiner.[1] No study we found shows a rope works the triceps better than a bar.
What these attachments are
A D-handle is a one-hand grip shaped like a D, for rows, presses, flyes and curls. A triceps rope is a short rope with stops at each end, clipped at its middle. Both are small, cheap and the first attachments most people add. REP's own suggestion for most home gyms is a triceps rope, a pair of D-handles and one lat bar,[2] which is a maker's advice, not independent evidence.
We do not test handles or ropes. Sizes here are each maker's published figures.
The decisions, in order
1. Single or pair. REP sells its D-handle singly or in pairs.[1] PRIME lists its RO-T8 Handles as a pair.[3] Two handles let you work both cables of a trainer at once.
2. Rigid or strap. REP's steel and urethane D-handles have nylon straps of 10.3 and 9.5 inches; the Pro Series has no strap and is 5 inches overall.[1] A strap lets the grip settle in line with the cable; a rigid handle does not. See D-handles: steel, urethane and strap.
3. Grip diameter. REP lists 32 mm (steel), 34 mm (urethane) and 25 mm (Pro Series).[1] Rogue's Rotating V-Grip uses 32 mm handles.[4] A thicker grip fills the hand more; a thinner one is easier to close.
4. Rope length: overall or doubled. Rogue lists its Tricep Rope at 28 inches total including the rubber ends, and about 11.5 inches once doubled.[5] The Yes4All set listing describes a 27-inch rope.[6] Compare like with like; see triceps rope length explained.
5. Swivel. Rogue's Rotating V-Grip turns on a 360-degree swivel.[4] On REP's D-handle, a swivel is mentioned only in feature copy.[1]
6. Carabiner included. REP says its D-handle comes without one.[1] REP's attachments use a standard carabiner-style connection.[2] Inspire includes a triceps rope and two D handles with its FTX trainer.[7]
Rope vs bar: what the studies show
The ACE report lists rope push-downs at about 74 percent and bar push-downs at about 67 percent of triangle push-up triceps activity, but reports no statistical test showing that rope differs from bar.[8] A 2016 study of pushdown handles found that triceps activity did not differ significantly between a standard handle and ball handles.[9] Pick the grip that feels right; no attachment here is shown to build more muscle. More in rope vs bar for triceps pushdowns.
Grip names vary too. MAG lists nine models across close, medium and wide grips, three-quarter grip and palm press.[10] PRIME's RO-T8 page gives no dimensions or materials.[3] Where a maker publishes no size, this site says so rather than guess.
How to choose
- Decide single or pair, and rigid or strap.
- Compare grip diameters in millimeters.
- For ropes, check whether the length is overall or doubled.
- Check whether a carabiner comes in the box.

Common questions
Which cable attachments do I need first?
Start from the movements you plan to do. REP's own suggestion for most home gyms is a triceps rope, a pair of D-handles and one lat bar, which covers pushdowns, single-arm work and pulldowns. Check first what your machine already includes. More in A small cable attachment set: what to start with
Is a cable attachment set worth it?
It can be if you will use every piece. A set such as Yes4All's four-piece kit covers a rope, a double D handle, a straight bar and a V bar, but pieces you never use are no saving, and the set's load figure is not stated per piece. More in A small cable attachment set: what to start with
Does an 880 lb set rating apply to each piece?
The listing does not say. Yes4All's set listing claims 880 lb without stating which component or test conditions the figure covers, so treat it as the seller's claim, not a rating for every piece. More in A small cable attachment set: what to start with
Do cable attachments come with a carabiner?
Often not. REP states that its D-handle and its Neutral Grip Lat Bar come without one, so plan to buy a carabiner that fits your cable end. More in A small cable attachment set: what to start with
What grip diameter should a D-handle have?
Makers range from about 25 mm to 34 mm: REP lists 25 mm, 32 mm and 34 mm versions, and Rogue's V-grip handles are 32 mm. We found no study that ranks one diameter above another, so choose by your hand size and comfort. More in D-handles: steel, urethane and strap versions compared by spec
Are D-handles sold in pairs?
It depends on the listing. REP sells its D-handle singly or in pairs, while PRIME lists its RO-T8 handles as a pair under one SKU. Check the unit before you compare listings. More in D-handles: steel, urethane and strap versions compared by spec
Do D-handles come with a carabiner?
Not always. REP states that a carabiner is not included with its D-handle, and PRIME's RO-T8 page does not say either way. More in D-handles: steel, urethane and strap versions compared by spec
Do D-handles have a load rating?
REP publishes none for its D-handles, and MAG and PRIME publish none for their handles. Where no rating is published, none can be quoted. More in D-handles: steel, urethane and strap versions compared by spec
Questions
What D-handle grip diameter is common?
Makers differ. REP lists 32 mm for its steel D-handle, 34 mm for urethane and 25 mm for its Pro Series, and Rogue uses 32 mm handles on its Rotating V-Grip.[1][4]
Is a rope better than a bar for triceps?
No study we found shows it. The ACE report gives rope and bar figures but no statistical test between them, and a 2016 handle study found no significant difference in triceps activity between handle types.[8][9]
