Short answer

Five approved handles and ropes publish a size you can check. For rows, choose Synergee's Double D if you want a listed 25.4 mm grip, or Yes4All's chrome Double D. For pushdowns, Titan's rope states its connector size, REP's is the longest at about 34 in, and Yes4All's comes with a carabiner. Many handles ship without a carabiner, REP's D-handle among them.[1]

How we chose

A handle or rope is on this list only if:

  1. The maker publishes a size you can compare. For handles that means a grip diameter or overall dimensions. REP, for example, lists 32 mm (steel), 34 mm (urethane) and 25 mm (Pro Series) grips, with straps of 10.3 and 9.5 inches on the first two.[1] For ropes it means a length, ideally saying whether it is overall or doubled: Rogue lists 28 inches total including the ends, and about 11.5 inches doubled.[2]
  2. We can say whether a carabiner comes with it. REP sells its D-handle singly or in pairs and states that no carabiner is included.[1] REP's attachments use a standard carabiner-style connection.[3]
  3. Any load figure is quoted as the maker's, for that product. Synergee and Yes4All give figures for their handles; they do not cover your cable or machine.
  4. The product is approved in our catalog. REP's D-handle and Rogue's rope above are examples, not approved picks.

Handle choice and results

Pick the grip that feels right for the exercise. The ACE report lists rope push-downs at about 74 percent and bar push-downs at about 67 percent of triangle push-up triceps activity, but reports no statistical test between rope and bar.[4] A 2016 study found that triceps activity did not differ significantly between a standard handle and ball handles.[5] More in rope vs bar for triceps pushdowns.

Questions

Is rope length measured overall or doubled?

It depends on the maker. Rogue gives both for its rope: 28 inches total including the ends, and about 11.5 inches doubled. Many listings give one number without saying which; see triceps rope length explained.[2]

Do D-handles come with a carabiner?

Often not. REP says its D-handle is sold without one. Check each listing, and plan to buy a carabiner that fits your cable end.[1]

Is a rope better than a bar for triceps?

No study we found shows it. The ACE report gives rope and bar figures but no statistical test between them, and a 2016 study found no significant difference in triceps activity between handle types.[4][5]
