2x2, 2x3 and 3x3 vs metric uprights for pulley mounts

A 3x3 label can mean 75 mm or a true 3 in tube. How makers list upright sizes for pulley mounts, the exact inch conversions and how to measure yours.

Short answer

A "3x3" label can mean a metric 75 mm tube or a true 3 in (76.2 mm) tube, and a mount made for one may not fit the other. Measure the outside width of one upright, then buy only a mount whose maker lists that exact size and your hole size.

Why "3x3" is not one size

Nominal sizes like 2x2 and 3x3 are labels, not measurements. Fringe Sport shows why that matters: it says its Sidewing Bottom Pulley fits metric 75 x 75 mm tubing sold as 3x3, but will not fit true 3x3 racks.[1]

Fringe describes metric 3x3 as about 75 mm (2.95 in) per side and true 3x3 as 3 in per side.[1] The gap is small, but a mount that wraps around the tube has little room to spare.

That exclusion is Fringe's, for this one product. Other mounts may be built differently, so read each maker's own list.

The exact numbers

One inch is exactly 25.4 mm, so 2 in is 50.8 mm and 3 in is 76.2 mm.[2] These are calculations, not fit tolerances. They tell you what a "true" inch tube measures, not whether a mount will fit it.

SYL Fitness sells its Rack Mounted Swivel Pulley in 50, 60, 70, 75 and 80 mm upright variants. It labels the 50 mm variant "2x2" and the 75 mm variant "3x3".[3] Those labels are nominal: 50 mm is not 2 in, and 75 mm is not 3 in. SYL's page does not state a hole size, the included parts, cable length or a load rating.[3]

2x2, 2x3 and 3x3 on makers' lists

  • Fringe lists the Sidewing for 2x3 tubing with 5/8 in holes and 2x2 tubing with 1 in or 5/8 in holes.[1]
  • Surplus Strength says the UPS Low fits a 3x3 or 2x3 lower crossmember with a top height of at least 6.75 in, on racks with 1 in or 5/8 in holes.[4]
  • Valor lists the RG-26 for its own 3x3 rigs, the BD-58 3x3 half rack and the BD-57 compact 3x3 strength rack.[5]

None of these is a promise that every rack with that label fits. A maker's list covers its product and the hosts it names.

How to measure your upright

  1. Measure across the outside of one upright, from one flat face to the opposite face. Fringe advises measuring the outside width of one upright if you are unsure.[1]
  2. Measure both faces if your rack might be 2x3, since one side is wider.
  3. Write the result in millimeters. A reading near 75 mm points to metric tubing; near 76 mm points to true 3 in tubing. If you cannot tell, send the measurement and your rack model to the pulley maker.
  4. Measure the hole diameter too, because the mount's bolts are sized for it. Our hole size guide covers that step.

The rack upright size finder and the 75 mm upright page group the makers by size.

When a rack-specific tower or a wall station is simpler

Some towers are sold by rack model rather than by tube size. Titan says its lat tower for T-3 and X-3 bolt-down racks does not fit Flat Foot racks or racks bought before October 2021.[6] A wall station skips the upright question: MIKOLO says its G3 should mount into wood studs or concrete, not drywall alone.[7]

Picks that fit2 products

Choose the Titan Short lat tower (SKU 401035) only for a Titan T-3 or X-3 Series bolt-down rack bought in or after October 2021, not a Flat Foot rack.

More on choosing

Choose the MIKOLO G3 Cable Machine variant if you are mounting to a wall with wood studs or concrete instead of a rack; MIKOLO's 300 lb figure is its maximum weight recommendation for the machine. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' is Amazon.com or the brand.

Questions

Is my 3x3 rack 75 mm or 76.2 mm?

It depends on the rack. Fringe Sport describes metric 3x3 tubing as about 75 mm (2.95 in) per side and true 3x3 as 3 in per side, and 3 in is exactly 76.2 mm. Measure the outside width of one upright.[1][2]

Will a 75 mm pulley mount fit a 3x3 rack?

Only if the maker says so for your tube. Fringe says its Sidewing Bottom Pulley fits metric 75 x 75 mm tubing sold as 3x3 but will not fit true 3x3 racks.[1]

Is 50 mm the same as 2x2?

Not exactly. Two inches is 50.8 mm. SYL Fitness labels its 50 mm variant "2x2", but that is a nominal label, not an exact conversion.[2][3]

How do I measure my upright?

Measure across the outside of one upright, flat side to flat side, in millimeters and inches. Fringe advises measuring the outside width of one upright if you are unsure which 3x3 you have.[1]
