Questions and answers
Short answers to the questions readers ask most. Each one links to the page that explains it in full, with sources.
Collets and collet nuts
What size collet do I need for 1/4 in bits?
A 1/4 in collet in your spindle's or router's own system. In ER11, the catalogs we read stop at 7 mm or 1/4 in, so 1/4 in is the top size. A 6 mm collet is not a 1/4 in collet: 1/4 in is 6.35 mm. More in Collets and collet nuts: ER11, ER16, ER20 and router collets
Can ER16 hold 1/2 in?
Not in the catalogs we read. Galaxy and Command Tool list ER16 up to 10 mm, Command Tool's largest inch ER16 is 0.375 in, and Somma lists ER16 to 13/32 in, all below 1/2 in (12.7 mm). ER20 reaches 1/2 in. More in Collets and collet nuts: ER11, ER16, ER20 and router collets
Are ER20 nuts all the same?
No. PreciseBits lists standard ER20 nuts with an M25 x 1.5 thread and ER20 mini nuts with an M24 x 1.0 thread, so a nut labeled only 'ER20' does not tell you which spindle it fits. More in Collets and collet nuts: ER11, ER16, ER20 and router collets
Do Makita collets fit DeWalt routers?
Treat router collets as model-specific. Elaire lists its standard DeWalt collets for the DW616, DW618 and DW621, not the DWP611, which it directs to a separate series. Buy the collet whose maker names your router model. More in Collets and collet nuts: ER11, ER16, ER20 and router collets
What is a good runout number for a hobby CNC collet?
No source we found sets one for hobby routers. Compare claims only when the makers state the same measuring method, such as PreciseBits' readings at the collet face and 1 inch down a blank. More in Collet runout claims: TIR, measuring points and what studies show
Are precision collets worth it?
Research on industrial and micro milling links runout to unequal tooth load and wear, but we found no controlled study of hobby wood routing. A precision collet is a maker's claim you can check on your own machine. More in Collet runout claims: TIR, measuring points and what studies show
How do I check runout on my machine?
PreciseBits recommends a dial test indicator on a smooth calibration blank, read at the collet face and at least 0.80 inch (20.3 mm) out. Do it with the power disconnected. More in Collet runout claims: TIR, measuring points and what studies show
Why do two collets with the same TIR claim perform differently?
The claims may not be measured the same way. REGO-FIX and Haas publish a TIR figure without stating where it is measured, while PreciseBits states two measuring points. More in Collet runout claims: TIR, measuring points and what studies show
Are all ER20 nuts the same?
No. PreciseBits lists standard ER20 nuts at M25 x 1.5 and mini ER20 nuts at M24 x 1.0. A nut labeled only ER20 does not tell you which spindle thread it fits. More in ER collet nuts: standard vs mini threads, and finding yours
What is an ER16M nut?
A mini ER16 nut. Carbide 3D's 65 mm ER16 spindle uses an ER16M nut with an M19 thread, which matches the M19 x 1.0 thread PreciseBits lists for ER16 mini nuts. More in ER collet nuts: standard vs mini threads, and finding yours
Do I need a torque wrench for an ER nut?
REGO-FIX recommends tightening its nuts with a torque wrench and publishes torque values separately. PreciseBits cautions that its torque values may not always be required, preferable or even possible, and treats maximum torque as a warning. Follow your spindle maker's instructions. More in ER collet nuts: standard vs mini threads, and finding yours
Why does the collet come out with the nut?
Carbide 3D explains that the off-center lip inside an ER nut traps the collet so it leaves the spindle taper with the nut. More in ER collet nuts: standard vs mini threads, and finding yours
What is the biggest bit an ER11 collet holds?
About 1/4 inch. Galaxy, Command Tool and Somma all stop at 7.0 mm, and Command Tool's largest inch ER11 collet clamps 0.231-0.250 inch. More in ER11 collet sizes and the 1/4 inch limit
Do I need a separate ER11 collet for every bit size?
For practical purposes, yes. PreciseBits gives an ER11 collet's clamping range as 0.020 inch (0.5 mm), and Somma states .019 inch for its ER11 collets. More in ER11 collet sizes and the 1/4 inch limit
Which ER11 nut fits my spindle?
The one that matches its nose thread. PreciseBits lists standard ER11 nuts at M14 x 0.75 and mini ER11 nuts at M13 x 0.75; check your spindle maker's documentation for which one it uses. More in ER11 collet sizes and the 1/4 inch limit
Can I use a 6 mm ER11 collet for 1/4 inch bits?
No. A 1/4 inch shank is 6.35 mm, 0.35 mm larger than 6 mm. Use the 1/4 inch collet. More in ER11 collet sizes and the 1/4 inch limit
Which routers use ER11 collets?
Among those we have sources for, Carbide 3D's ER-11 Compact Router and Sienci's AutoSpin both use ER11 collets and list 1/4 inch as the largest shank. More in ER11 collet sizes and the 1/4 inch limit
Can an ER11 collet hold a 1/4 inch bit?
Yes, at the top of its range. The ER11 catalogs checked stop at 7.0 mm, about 1/4 inch, and Command Tool's largest inch ER11 collet clamps 0.231-0.250 inch. More in ER11 vs ER16 vs ER20: which shanks each collet system holds
Can an ER16 collet hold a 1/2 inch shank?
No. A 1/2 inch shank is 12.7 mm, outside the ER16 ranges Galaxy, Command Tool and Somma publish. You need ER20 or larger. More in ER11 vs ER16 vs ER20: which shanks each collet system holds
Is a 6 mm collet fine for a 1/4 inch shank?
No. A 1/4 inch shank is 6.35 mm, 0.35 mm larger than 6 mm, and REGO-FIX says never to clamp a shank larger than the collet's nominal size. Use a 1/4 inch collet. More in ER11 vs ER16 vs ER20: which shanks each collet system holds
What does ER20 mean?
It names the collet series size, not the bit. Carbide 3D says the number after ER denotes the size; ER20 collets in the catalogs checked hold shanks up to 13 mm or 1/2 inch. More in ER11 vs ER16 vs ER20: which shanks each collet system holds
Can I put an ER20 collet in an ER11 spindle?
No. The spindle nose and nut are made for one series, so the spindle decides the system. Check the spindle maker's documentation for its collet series. More in ER11 vs ER16 vs ER20: which shanks each collet system holds
Which collet holds a 1/2 inch router bit?
An ER20 collet made for 1/2 inch, such as Command Tool's ER20-F500 (0.461-0.500 inch) or Haas 04-1180. ER16 does not reach 1/2 inch in any catalog checked. More in ER20 collets for 1/2 inch bits: sizes, makers and spindle limits
Is a 13 mm collet OK for a 1/2 inch shank?
Follow the collet maker's stated range. Galaxy and Command Tool list a 12.0-13.0 mm ER20 collet, and 1/2 inch is 12.7 mm, but a collet made for 1/2 inch is the direct match; if the range on the label does not include 12.7 mm, do not use it. More in ER20 collets for 1/2 inch bits: sizes, makers and spindle limits
Can my ER20 spindle run large 1/2 inch bits?
The spindle maker and the bit maker decide that, not the collet. OSHA advises labeling tools and holders with their maximum permissible speed and never running them faster. More in ER20 collets for 1/2 inch bits: sizes, makers and spindle limits
Are all ER20 nuts the same?
No. PreciseBits lists standard ER20 nuts at M25 x 1.5 and mini ER20 nuts at M24 x 1.0, so the label ER20 alone does not tell you which spindle a nut fits. More in ER20 collets for 1/2 inch bits: sizes, makers and spindle limits
How far should a bit go into an ER collet?
REGO-FIX advises inserting the tool over the full collet length where possible and never less than two-thirds of the collet length. More in Seating an ER collet and bit: what the makers say
Why won't my collet come out with the nut?
It was probably not snapped into the nut's retention lip. Carbide 3D says the off-center lip traps the collet so it leaves the taper with the nut, and that the collet must be snapped in before the tool goes in. More in Seating an ER collet and bit: what the makers say
Can I use a 1/4 inch collet for a slightly oversize shank?
No. REGO-FIX advises never clamping a shank larger than the collet's nominal size and using the next larger collet instead. More in Seating an ER collet and bit: what the makers say
How tight should the collet nut be?
We give no torque figure. REGO-FIX recommends a torque wrench and publishes its values; PreciseBits cautions that its torque values are not always required or possible. Follow your spindle maker's instructions. More in Seating an ER collet and bit: what the makers say
Do I need to unplug the machine to change a bit?
CCOHS router guidance says to disconnect the power supply before making any adjustments or changing bits. More in Seating an ER collet and bit: what the makers say
Can I use 1/8 inch bits in a DeWalt DWP611?
DeWalt lists the DWP611 with a 1/4 inch collet. Elaire sells aftermarket DWP-series collets in sizes including 1/8 inch, but it does not say DeWalt approves sizes other than 1/4 inch. More in Makita RT0701C and DeWalt DWP611 collets, nuts and wrenches
Does a DW618 collet fit a DWP611?
No, according to Elaire. Its standard DeWalt collets are listed for the DW616, DW618 and DW621, and it directs DWP611 owners to its separate DWP series. More in Makita RT0701C and DeWalt DWP611 collets, nuts and wrenches
Do I need a new nut for precision collets?
For PreciseBits' DeWalt 611 parts, yes: its DEPG-0611-NUT and Talon wrench work only with PreciseBits collets, not the stock collet. Check each maker's notes for its own parts. More in Makita RT0701C and DeWalt DWP611 collets, nuts and wrenches
What is the part number of the Makita RT0701C collet?
Makita lists the RT0701C's included 1/4 inch collet as part 763637-1, supplied with two spanner wrenches, 781039-9 and 781011-1. More in Makita RT0701C and DeWalt DWP611 collets, nuts and wrenches
Do Carbide 3D's precision collets fit the ER-11 Compact Router?
No. Carbide 3D says its precision collets fit only the Carbide Compact Router, not its ER-11 Compact Router or its VFD spindles. More in Makita RT0701C and DeWalt DWP611 collets, nuts and wrenches
Do I need a full set or single collets?
Buy the sizes you run. A set suits a shop with mixed bits; a single collet suits one shank size. Haas, for example, sells a single ER20 1/2 in collet (04-1180) with a 0.500-0.461 in range. More in ER collet sets and single collets with the range stated
Can I clamp a 1/4 in bit in a 6 mm collet?
No. A 1/4 in shank is 6.35 mm, larger than 6 mm, and REGO-FIX advises against clamping a shank larger than the collet's nominal size. More in ER collet sets and single collets with the range stated
Why is there no ER16 set here?
None is in our approved catalog yet. If your spindle is ER16, buy ER16 collets: an ER11 or ER20 collet will not fit its nose. More in ER collet sets and single collets with the range stated
How do I know which collet system my spindle uses?
The spindle or kit maker states it. Onefinity's 65 mm 1.5 kW Redline kit, for example, ships with an ER11 nut and its 80 mm kits with an ER20 nut. More in Collet system finder
Does ER11 mean 11 mm bits?
No. The number names the collet size; the ER11 catalogs we read stop at 7 mm or 1/4 in. More in Collet system finder
Will a precision collet for one router fit another?
Only if its maker says so. Carbide 3D says its precision collets fit only the Carbide Compact Router, not its ER-11 Compact Router or VFD spindles. More in Collet system finder

Is MDF or hardwood dust dangerous?
OSHA lists dermatitis, allergic and nonallergic respiratory effects and cancer among health effects associated with wood dust, and notes nasal cancer linked to certain hardwoods especially at high exposures. NIOSH considers both hardwood and softwood dust potentially carcinogenic. The sources we cite do not single out MDF. More in CNC router dust: what OSHA and NIOSH say about wood dust
Does a dust boot make CNC dust safe?
No source we found gives that guarantee for any hobby dust boot. OSHA names local exhaust at or near the source as the primary control, which is what a boot connected to a collector attempts, but no boot is rated for exposure. More in CNC router dust: what OSHA and NIOSH say about wood dust
Is there an OSHA limit for wood dust?
According to NIOSH, the 1989 OSHA wood dust limits were remanded by a federal appeals court and are not currently in force. More in CNC router dust: what OSHA and NIOSH say about wood dust
Did NIOSH find a 90% dust reduction for routers?
NIOSH HC6 (1996) describes a Jet Stripper system on industrial automated routers that it says reduced airborne dust exposure by 90%. That was a specific industrial system, not a rating for any hobby dust boot. More in CNC router dust: what OSHA and NIOSH say about wood dust
Will my 2.5 inch shop-vac hose fit a dust boot?
It fits some directly. Carbide 3D says Sweepy 2.0 takes a 2.5 inch shop-vac hose as standard, and KentCNC says its Mini's 2-1/2 inch connector fits most shop vacs. Other boots need a reducer, and port labels are nominal, so check the actual inside and outside diameters. More in Dust-boot hose ports, adapters and brush rings
What size hose should I use with an 80 mm spindle?
Carbide 3D does not recommend 35 mm hoses with its 80 mm VFD spindle because they can clog, but it names no recommended size. Follow your boot maker's port size. More in Dust-boot hose ports, adapters and brush rings
Where do I get replacement dust-boot brushes?
From the boot maker. PwnCNC sells brush by the inch and publishes lengths per boot and diameter; Onefinity ships the Suckit SM with 30 mm and 50 mm brush rings; KentCNC offers optional ring sizes. More in Dust-boot hose ports, adapters and brush rings
Is the Suckit SM port really 2.5 inches?
Onefinity calls it a 2.5 inch port, but lists it as 67.60 mm (2.66 in) outside and 57.93 mm (2.28 in) inside. Treat 2.5 inch as a nominal label. More in Dust-boot hose ports, adapters and brush rings
Is there an 80 mm boot on this list?
No; none is in our approved catalog yet. Carbide 3D's Sweepy 2.0, Onefinity's Suckit SM and PwnCNC's PwnBoot all come in or are made for 80 mm, but they are not approved. More in Dust boots with the mount diameter and hose port stated
Will a 38 mm port fit my shop vac?
Only if your hose or adapter matches. Genmitsu gives a 32 mm inner and 38 mm outer diameter for its DS-series ports; compare both numbers with your hose end. More in Dust boots with the mount diameter and hose port stated
Does a dust shoe protect my lungs?
No source we read guarantees that. OSHA names local exhaust ventilation at the source as the primary control for wood dust; a shoe is the capture point, not a health guarantee. More in Dust boots with the mount diameter and hose port stated
Measuring and buying
How do I know a part fits my machine?
The part's maker names your machine and Z version, and its size matches what you measured. Carbide 3D says its 65 mm VFD kit is not compatible with machines other than its Shapeokos, and FoxAlien says its Z clamp is not compatible with the XE-Ultra. More in Before you buy: identify the machine, measure the mount, check the seller
Is a CE mark enough in the US?

Will I pay duty on CNC parts?
Often. CBP says duty-free de minimis treatment is suspended for goods valued at $800 or less by all modes. CBSA says postal imports over CAN$20 pay duty and taxes on the full value. More in Before you buy: identify the machine, measure the mount, check the seller
Is that AliExpress store official?
Only the brand can say. FoxAlien names AliExpress among its authorized brand stores. MICROJIG's retailer list and POWERTEC's named channels do not include AliExpress, and POWERTEC says other sites claiming to sell its products are not affiliated with it. More in Buying CNC spindles and accessories on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check
Is huanyangvfd.com Huanyang's own site?
We found no evidence it is. The site says it takes part in the Amazon Associates program, does not say it makes Huanyang drives and names no operating company. More in Buying CNC spindles and accessories on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check
How do I check who sells an Amazon listing?
Read the 'Ships from' and 'Sold by' lines for the offer you are about to buy. Amazon describes Brand Stores as self-service storefronts for showcasing a brand's products; the seller of each offer is shown on those two lines, so read them every time. More in Buying CNC spindles and accessories on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check
Does a spindle listing's voltage apply to every country?
Not necessarily. Genmitsu sells its V2 water-cooled kit in regional variants, while the page states only a 110 V/60 Hz input. Confirm the exact variant's supply before you order. More in Buying CNC spindles and accessories on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check
Will I pay duty on a spindle from China?
In the US, the duty-free de minimis treatment for goods valued at $800 or less is suspended, so plan for duty. In Canada, postal imports over CAN$20 pay duty and taxes on the full value, and courier or broker fees come on top. More in Returns and import costs for CNC parts in the US and Canada
Can I return a spindle kit to AliExpress?
Only under the seller's terms, unless the listing shows the Free Returns icon in a covered country. For Mainland China sellers, Free Returns allow 90 days from the order date, in original condition with all accessories and packaging, once per order. More in Returns and import costs for CNC parts in the US and Canada
Who pays return shipping?
It depends on where you bought. FoxAlien's direct store charges the customer unless FoxAlien made the error, and SainSmart's direct store makes customers responsible for return shipping. Amazon Canada says options depend on location, seller, item and reason. More in Returns and import costs for CNC parts in the US and Canada
Do I get duty back if I return a part to a seller outside Canada?
CBSA can refund duties and taxes on qualifying personal imports returned to a seller outside Canada, but not brokerage fees or shipping and handling. More in Returns and import costs for CNC parts in the US and Canada
How do I find out which Z axis I have?
Check your order record and the maker's parts list for the Z name (for example Onefinity's Z-16 or Z-20, or Carbide 3D's belt-driven Z, HDZ or Z-Plus). Onefinity sells separate 80 mm mounts for the Z-16 and the Gen 2 Z-20, so the slider name decides the part. More in Identify your CNC machine and Z axis before buying parts
Will a part for my brand fit my machine?
Only if the part's maker names your machine. Carbide 3D's 80 mm Spindle Mount, for example, fits the Shapeoko 5 Pro and will not fit other Shapeoko machines. More in Identify your CNC machine and Z axis before buying parts
My machine is old or modified: where do I start?
Start with what is on the machine now: the motor, its body diameter and the mount. Then compare those with the maker's current lists. Older Shapeoko 3 controllers (V2.3 or older, shipped before November 2019) need Carbide 3D's updated board for its 65 mm VFD kit. More in Identify your CNC machine and Z axis before buying parts
Is the X-Carve upgrade kit discontinued?
Inventables' Upgrades collection listed the Z Axis Kit, the Belt and Motor Kit and the Makita Spindle Mount as sold out when viewed on 2026-10-11. The page makes no discontinuation statement. More in Identify your CNC machine and Z axis before buying parts
Does the FoxAlien Z clamp fit the XE-Ultra?
No. FoxAlien states its standard 65 and 69 mm Z clamp is not compatible with the XE-Ultra. More in Identify your CNC machine and Z axis before buying parts

Does a VFD need a UL mark?
In Canada, Health Canada says plug-in electrical products must be certified by an accredited body. In US workplaces, OSHA lists electrical equipment among products needing NRTL approval under some conditions. A drive standard such as IEC 61800-5-1 exists, but its existence does not certify any drive. More in UL, ETL, CSA and CE marks on spindle kits and VFDs
How do I check an ETL listing?
Find the mark on the product itself, note the exact model, and look it up in Intertek's ETL Listed Mark directory. Intertek says the directory shows products it has tested and certified. More in UL, ETL, CSA and CE marks on spindle kits and VFDs
Is a UL Recognized Component mark the same as UL Listed?
No. UL says the Recognized Component mark covers parts meant to be built into a larger UL Listed product, not a complete standalone product. More in UL, ETL, CSA and CE marks on spindle kits and VFDs
My machine is not in the list. What now?
Measure the router or spindle body and note the Z axis and table thread, then buy only parts whose maker names your machine. The measuring guide and the mount size finder help. More in CNC part finder by machine and Z axis
Why does a field say 'Not confirmed'?
Because no maker page, guide or support answer we read states it. We leave it blank rather than fill it from a reseller listing. More in CNC part finder by machine and Z axis
Why are there separate pages for the same brand?
Because fit changes with the Z axis. Onefinity sells one 80 mm mount for its original Z-16 slider and another for Gen 2 Elite machines with the Z-20, and each excludes the other. More in CNC part finder by machine and Z axis

Does DeWalt publish the DWP611 body diameter?
Not on the DWP611 page we read. It lists the router as 1-1/4 HP MAX, 7 amps and corded, but no body diameter. More in DeWalt DWP611: 69 mm or 71 mm mount?
Can I still buy Carbide 3D's 69 mm DeWalt mount?
Our source is Carbide 3D's May 2021 announcement for the Shapeoko Pro, Shapeoko 4 and HDZ (V4.0). It says nothing about current availability, so check Carbide 3D's store. More in DeWalt DWP611: 69 mm or 71 mm mount?
Where on the router do I measure?
On the plain round band the mount clamps onto, not the motor cap, vent ring or base. Take two or three readings, turning the motor between them. More in How to measure a router or spindle body for a mount
What if my reading is between 65 and 69 mm?
Measure again on a clean band, then compare with the size the motor's maker and the mount's maker state. We found no published fit tolerance, so if it still sits between sizes, ask the mount maker before ordering. More in How to measure a router or spindle body for a mount
Is a 64.8 mm body a 65 mm fit?
For Sienci's AutoSpin, Sienci says so: it gives the body as 64.8 mm and says it fits 65 mm router mounts. That is Sienci's statement about its own spindle, not a rule for other motors. More in How to measure a router or spindle body for a mount
My caliper reads in inches. How do I convert?
Multiply by 25.4: one inch is exactly 25.4 mm. The result is a calculation, not proof that a metric mount fits. More in How to measure a router or spindle body for a mount
Can I put a 65 mm router in an 80 mm mount?
Only with a reducing ring or shim made for that pair, seated evenly. PwnCNC sells an 80 to 65 mm shim, designed primarily around its own mounts. More in Spindle mount adapter rings, shims and adapter plates
Can I put an 80 mm spindle in a 65 mm mount?
No. A ring only steps a larger bore down; nothing makes a bore grip a larger body. You need an 80 mm mount made for your machine. More in Spindle mount adapter rings, shims and adapter plates
What is the difference between an adapter ring and an adapter plate?
A ring changes what the mount holds; a plate changes how the mount bolts to the machine. PwnCNC's mount needs a machine-specific plate on machines other than its Dominator CNCs. More in Spindle mount adapter rings, shims and adapter plates
Will a PwnCNC shim fit another brand's mount?
PwnCNC says its shims were designed primarily around PwnCNC mounts and must sit evenly without overlapping a split, bolt or internal obstruction. For another brand's mount, ask both makers first. More in Spindle mount adapter rings, shims and adapter plates
Will a Genmitsu holder fit my Shapeoko or Onefinity?
Do not assume so. Genmitsu names its own machines, and Shapeoko and Onefinity mounts are made per Z axis: Carbide 3D says its Shapeoko 5 Pro 80 mm mount fits no other Shapeoko, and Onefinity sells separate mounts for the Z-16 and the Gen 2 Z-20. More in Spindle and router mounts with a stated bore and machine list
Why no 71 mm holder here?
None is in our approved catalog. Sienci offers its LongMill mount in 71 mm for the DWP611 and Bosch Colt, but it is not approved yet. More in Spindle and router mounts with a stated bore and machine list
Can I use one of these with an adapter ring?
Only if a ring's maker names both sizes and the mount. PwnCNC, for example, makes its mount in 65 or 80 mm and says machines other than its Dominator need a machine-specific adapter plate. More in Spindle and router mounts with a stated bore and machine list
My measurement falls between two sizes. Which do I pick?
Neither yet. Check the router or spindle maker's stated body size and buy a holder whose maker names that model. The measuring guide shows where to measure. More in Router and spindle mount size finder
Why does the DeWalt DWP611 appear under 69 mm and 71 mm?
Because makers label it both ways: FoxAlien and Carbide 3D call their DWP611 parts 69 mm, Sienci lists its 71 mm mount for it. We show both and do not average them. More in Router and spindle mount size finder
Can a ring make an 80 mm mount hold a 65 mm router?
Only a ring or shim whose maker documents it. PwnCNC sells 80-to-65 mm shims and says they were designed primarily around its own mounts. More in Router and spindle mount size finder

Will a spindle fit my Z axis?
Only if the kit maker names your machine and Z. Carbide 3D, for example, does not recommend its 65 mm spindle on a Shapeoko 3 with the original belt-driven Z because of the weight. More in Keep the trim router or move to a spindle?
Will my machine maker help me fit a third-party spindle?
Ask first. Sienci, for one, says it does not offer technical support for installing third-party spindles on the LongMill. More in Keep the trim router or move to a spindle?
Trim routers for CNC use
Which trim router do most CNC mounts take?
Go by mount size, not popularity. A 65 mm mount takes the Makita RT0701C class (FoxAlien's 65 mm clamp names it, and Sienci's standard 65 mm LongMill mount was tested with the RT0700/RT0701); the DeWalt DWP611 goes in a holder its maker labels 69 or 71 mm. More in Trim routers for CNC: body size, stock collet and speed range
Can I use 1/8 in bits in a trim router?
Only with a 1/8 in collet its maker or a collet maker lists for that router. Carbide 3D ships its Compact Router with a 1/4 and 1/8 in precision collet set, and its ER-11 Compact Router with 1/4 and 1/8 in ER11 collets; Makita lists the RT0701C with a 1/4 in collet. More in Trim routers for CNC: body size, stock collet and speed range
Is the DWP611's speed range published?
Not on the DeWalt page we read. It lists 27,000 rpm and a 1/4 in collet, but no low-end speed, so we cannot state a full range. More in Trim routers for CNC: body size, stock collet and speed range
Is a spindle quieter than a trim router?
Not established. Sienci says its AutoSpin spindle has no noise advantage over the Makita RT0701C at the same RPM. More in Trim routers for CNC: body size, stock collet and speed range
Can I use ER11 collets in my Carbide Compact Router?
No. The Compact Router uses its 1/4 in factory collet and Carbide 3D's precision collets. Standard ER11 collets are for the ER-11 Compact Router. More in Carbide Compact Router vs ER-11 Compact Router: collets that fit
Do the precision collets fit the ER-11 router?
No. Carbide 3D says its precision collets fit only the Compact Router, not the ER-11 Compact Router or its VFD spindles. More in Carbide Compact Router vs ER-11 Compact Router: collets that fit
Which dust boot fits?
Carbide 3D sells the Sweepy 2.0 in a 65 mm version for the Carbide Compact Router. Its listing does not name the ER-11 model, so ask Carbide 3D for that one. More in Carbide Compact Router vs ER-11 Compact Router: collets that fit
What is the largest bit the ER-11 Compact Router takes?
Carbide 3D lists a 1/4 in maximum cutter shank for the ER-11 Compact Router. More in Carbide Compact Router vs ER-11 Compact Router: collets that fit

Ask your machine's maker. Sienci, for example, says the Makita RT0700/RT0701 is the router it has thoroughly tested on the LongMill. More in Trim routers for CNC: Makita RT0701C, DeWalt DWP611 and Carbide 3D
What is the DWP611's speed range?
DeWalt's page lists 27,000 rpm but no low-end speed, so we do not state a full range. More in Trim routers for CNC: Makita RT0701C, DeWalt DWP611 and Carbide 3D
Clamps, T-track and inserts
What clamps fit an M6 table?
Clamps whose maker lists M6 hardware. Genmitsu's low-profile toe clamp uses M6 screws and nuts and is listed for M6 spoilboards, hybrid tables and T-track, and Carbide 3D's Essential Clamps ship with M6 screws for its Hybrid Table. More in CNC workholding: clamps, T-track and threaded inserts by thread
Do I need T-track or threaded inserts?
Either works if the clamp hardware matches. Carbide 3D says its Essential Clamps can be used with 1/4-inch hardware on your own T-track or threaded inserts. Inserts give fixed points in an MDF board; track lets a bolt slide along a line. More in CNC workholding: clamps, T-track and threaded inserts by thread
Which clamps suit edge or sign work?
Low-profile toe or side clamps that grip the edge leave the top face clear for the toolpath. Genmitsu's toe clamp is 15 mm tall; whatever you use, set the toolpath so the bit never reaches the clamp. More in CNC workholding: clamps, T-track and threaded inserts by thread
How long should clamp bolts be?
Long enough for the clamp and stock, short enough not to bottom out. Carbide 3D's Crush-It hardware kit gives M6 bolts from 16 to 40 mm, and Carbide 3D staff said 10 mm inserts work in place of 13 mm ones if every bolt is 3 mm longer. More in CNC workholding: clamps, T-track and threaded inserts by thread
Which clamps keep the bit away from the clamp?
None guarantees it. Low-profile and edge clamps sit lower or off the top face, but you still have to plan toolpaths around every clamp and check the clearance before you run the job. More in CNC hold-down clamps: top, toe, low-profile and stops
Top clamp or edge clamp for sign work?
If you are carving the whole top face, a top clamp sits in the way, so edge or low-profile clamps make sense; Carbide 3D announced its Tiger Claw for setups where clamping the top face is not an option. For through-cuts and parts with spare margin, top clamps outside the cut area work. More in CNC hold-down clamps: top, toe, low-profile and stops
Are nylon clamps safe to hit with a bit?
No maker claim we found says so, and you should not rely on it. Plan toolpaths so the bit never reaches any clamp. More in CNC hold-down clamps: top, toe, low-profile and stops
Can a person hold the work instead of a clamp?
No. CCOHS advises never relying on yourself or a second person to hold the material being routed, and OSHA lists poorly fixed stock among causes of kickback. More in CNC hold-down clamps: top, toe, low-profile and stops
Can I buy extra Crush-It jaws?
Carbide 3D says extra jaws come with the Crush-It Essential set but are not sold separately. More in CNC hold-down clamps: top, toe, low-profile and stops
Is my spoilboard M6 or 1/4-20?
Check the machine or table maker's documentation, or the hardware that came with it. Carbide 3D's Hybrid Table hardware is M6, and Onefinity said in 2021 that its QCW uses a 1/4-20 track. More in M6 vs 1/4-20 (and M8) spoilboard threads: which hardware fits
Can I mix M6 and 1/4-20 clamps?
Only if each clamp gets bolts in the thread of the hole or track it goes into. A clamp body may accept either bolt (Carbide 3D says its Essential Clamps can be used with 1/4 inch hardware on your own track or inserts), but an M6 bolt and a 1/4-20 bolt are not interchangeable. More in M6 vs 1/4-20 (and M8) spoilboard threads: which hardware fits
What thread does a Onefinity QCW use?
Onefinity stated in an official October 2021 forum post that the QCW uses a 1/4-20 track and that a standard 1/4-20 bolt head fits. More in M6 vs 1/4-20 (and M8) spoilboard threads: which hardware fits
Do M6 and 1/4-20 inserts need the same drill?
Not always. E-Z LOK lists drills per part number, and the same internal thread can need different drills in different insert families. Use the insert maker's chart. More in M6 vs 1/4-20 (and M8) spoilboard threads: which hardware fits
Will 1/4-20 hex bolts fit T-track?
In some tracks. Rockler says its Universal T-Track's stacked slot accepts 1/4 inch hex bolts as well as 1/4 and 5/16 inch T-bolts. Other tracks need the bolt their maker names. More in T-track for CNC hold-downs: profile, bolts and miter track
Is miter track the same as T-track?
No. POWERTEC's Standard Miter T-Track is designed for 3/4 x 3/8 inch T-bars, and its page lists no bolt slot, so treat it as a miter-bar track, not proof that clamp bolts fit. More in T-track for CNC hold-downs: profile, bolts and miter track
How far apart should T-tracks be on a CNC?
No track maker we found gives a spacing for CNC tables. Follow your machine or table maker's layout and plan it around the clamps and stock sizes you use. More in T-track for CNC hold-downs: profile, bolts and miter track
Does a matching thread mean a T-bolt fits my track?
No. The head must fit the slot profile too. Rockler publishes the outside size of its Universal T-Track but not its slot dimensions, so stay with bolts the track maker lists. More in T-track for CNC hold-downs: profile, bolts and miter track
What drill size for M6 inserts in MDF?
It depends on the insert. E-Z LOK lists its 900610 E-Z Hex insert for soft woods including MDF, with a 23/64 inch drill; Carbide 3D recommends a 9 mm pilot hole for its own M6 inserts. More in Threaded inserts for a CNC spoilboard: thread, wood and drill size

Can I use shorter inserts?
Carbide 3D staff said 10 mm M6 inserts can replace 13 mm ones, but every bolt then needs to be 3 mm longer. More in Threaded inserts for a CNC spoilboard: thread, wood and drill size
Does E-Z LOK publish a pull-out rating for these inserts?
We found none on the 900610-13 part page. We publish no holding-force figure. More in Threaded inserts for a CNC spoilboard: thread, wood and drill size
Can I use 1/4-20 clamps on an M6 table?
Not with 1/4-20 bolts in M6 holes: they are different threads. Carbide 3D lets you use 1/4-inch hardware with its Essential Clamps on your own T-track or inserts, which means changing the hardware, not mixing threads. More in CNC clamps, T-track and inserts with the thread stated
Which drill do I need for M6 inserts?
The one the insert's maker gives for that part. E-Z LOK lists 23/64 in for its M6 E-Z Hex inserts and 25/64 in for its M6 E-Z Knife; Carbide 3D recommends a 9 mm pilot hole for its own inserts. More in CNC clamps, T-track and inserts with the thread stated
Are Carbide 3D clamps on this list?
Not yet; none is in our approved catalog. Carbide 3D's Essential Clamps ship with M6 screws for its Hybrid Table. More in CNC clamps, T-track and inserts with the thread stated
