Short answer
The mount size follows the motor body, and the body follows the router or spindle model. Makers pair 65 mm with Makita RT0701C-class routers and many ER11 spindles, 69 or 71 mm with the DeWalt DWP611 depending on the maker, and 80 mm with larger ER20 spindles. A mount only holds the body size its bore was made for.

52 mm
52 mm holders sit on smaller hobby machines. Genmitsu lists 42 mm and 52 mm spindle mounts for the 4040-PRO.[1] FoxAlien's Masuter Pro package includes 52 mm and 65 mm spindle clamps.[2] Genmitsu's 300 W spindle is a 52 mm, 12-48 V DC motor with an ER11 collet.[3]
65 mm
65 mm is the size makers most often pair with compact trim routers:
- FoxAlien's 65 mm Z clamp is for routers like the Makita RT0701C.[4]
- Sienci says the standard LongMill MK2 router mount has a 65 mm bore, and the Makita RT0700/RT0701 is the router it has thoroughly tested on the LongMill.[5]
- Carbide 3D's Compact Router has a 65 mm body.[6]
- Sienci's AutoSpin has a 64.8 mm body that Sienci says fits 65 mm router mounts.[7]
- In PwnCNC's spindle kit, the 65 mm mount pairs with ER11 motors.[8]
69 mm and 71 mm
FoxAlien's 69 mm Z clamp is for routers like the DeWalt DWP611.[4] Carbide 3D sells its Sweepy 2.0 dust boot in a 69 mm version for the DeWalt trim router.[9] Sienci, by contrast, lists a 71 mm LongMill mount for the DeWalt DWP611 and the Bosch Colt.[10]
Two makers, two labels, one router. Neither source explains why. Buy the holder whose maker names your router for your machine; see the DeWalt DWP611 69 or 71 mm guide.
80 mm
In PwnCNC's spindle kit, the 80 mm mount pairs with ER20 motors.[8] PwnCNC's Spindle Mount comes with a 65 mm or 80 mm bore, and both share the same external dimensions.[11] Sienci's LongMill mount is also offered in 80 mm.[10]

Can a 65 mm mount hold an 80 mm spindle?
No. A bore cannot grip a body larger than itself. The other direction, a smaller body in a larger bore, needs a maker-made reducing ring; see spindle mount adapter rings and shims.

These holders state the bore and the machines their maker lists. Choose by your motor's body and your machine:

Questions
Which mount size do I need for a Makita RT0701C?
65 mm. FoxAlien sells its 65 mm Z clamp for routers like the RT0701C, and Sienci's standard 65 mm LongMill mount is the one it tested with the RT0700/RT0701.[4][5]
Can a 65 mm mount hold an 80 mm spindle?
No. A bore cannot grip a larger body. Only the other direction is possible, a smaller body in a larger bore, and only with a reducing ring its maker makes for that pair.
Why do two makers give different sizes for the same router?
FoxAlien calls its DeWalt DWP611 clamp 69 mm, while Sienci lists its DWP611 mount as 71 mm. Neither source explains the difference, so buy the holder whose maker names your router.[4][10]
Does the mount size tell me the collet system?
Not by itself, but makers often pair them. PwnCNC pairs its 65 mm mount with ER11 motors and its 80 mm mount with ER20 motors. Check the spindle's own collet listing.[8]
