How the data is built
Ranges come from collet makers' catalogs (Galaxy, Command Tool, Somma and others) and nut threads from a supplier reference table, read on 2026-10-11. Each system page cites its sources. Where no maker states a field, it reads "Not confirmed".
The ER number is not the shank size
The number after ER names the collet size.[1] An ER11 collet does not hold an 11 mm shank; the ER11 catalogs we read stop at 7.0 mm, about 1/4 in.[2]
ER16 stops short of 1/2 in
A 1/2 in shank is 12.7 mm. That is outside the ER16 ranges Galaxy publishes (to 10 mm),[3] Command Tool publishes (to 10 mm and 0.375 in)[4] and Somma publishes (to 13/32 in).[2] ER20 is the smallest of the three systems with a listed 1/2 in collet. Units matter at the small end too: 1/4 in is 6.35 mm, not 6 mm.[5]
Router collets are model-specific
A router's own collet fits the models its maker names. Elaire lists its standard DeWalt collets for the DW616, DW618 and DW621, not the DWP611.[6] Carbide 3D says its precision collets fit only its Carbide Compact Router.[7] So the finder lists the Makita RT0701C, DeWalt DWP611 and Carbide Compact Router collets as separate systems.

Questions
How do I know which collet system my spindle uses?
The spindle or kit maker states it. Onefinity's 65 mm 1.5 kW Redline kit, for example, ships with an ER11 nut and its 80 mm kits with an ER20 nut.[8][9]
Does ER11 mean 11 mm bits?
No. The number names the collet size; the ER11 catalogs we read stop at 7 mm or 1/4 in.[1][2]
Will a precision collet for one router fit another?
Only if its maker says so. Carbide 3D says its precision collets fit only the Carbide Compact Router, not its ER-11 Compact Router or VFD spindles.[7]
