Identify your CNC machine and Z axis before buying parts
Why CNC parts fit by machine and Z version, what Carbide 3D, Onefinity, Genmitsu, FoxAlien and X-Carve name, and a sheet to record yours.

Short answer
Write down four things before you buy any CNC part: the exact machine model, the Z axis version, the controller (on older machines) and the router or spindle it carries now. Makers sell mounts, spindle kits and boots per machine and per Z version, so the brand name alone does not tell you what fits.
Why the brand name is not enough
One maker can sell several machines, and one machine can ship with different Z axes over its life. A part listed for "Shapeoko" or "Onefinity" may name only some of them. The safe reading is narrow: a part fits the machines and Z versions its maker names, and nothing else.
Carbide 3D Shapeoko
Carbide 3D says its 65 mm VFD Spindle Kit should fit the Shapeoko 3, Shapeoko 4, Shapeoko Pro and Shapeoko 5 Pro, and is not compatible with other CNC machines.[1] Within that list, the Z axis and controller still matter:
- Carbide 3D does not recommend the 65 mm VFD spindle on a Shapeoko 3 with the original belt-driven Z axis, because of the spindle's weight.[2]
- Shapeoko 3 machines with a V2.3 or older controller, shipped before November 2019, need Carbide 3D's updated controller board with enclosure to use the kit.[2]
- The Z-Plus on the Shapeoko 3, 4 and Pro has no alternate spindle-mount position; Carbide 3D's raise-the-mount step applies only to the Shapeoko 5 Pro.[2]
- Carbide 3D's 80 mm spindle kit guide lists the Shapeoko 5 Pro as the only supported machine.[3] Its 80 mm Spindle Mount will not fit other Shapeoko machines.[4]
- In May 2021, Carbide 3D announced a 69 mm mount for DeWalt routers that works with the Shapeoko Pro, Shapeoko 4 and HDZ (V4.0).[5] That is a historical announcement, not a statement that the mount is on sale today.
Onefinity
Onefinity sells two different 80 mm mounts. SKU 1z1680mmspindlemount fits the original Z-16 slider and is not compatible with Elite series or wall-mounted machines.[6] SKU z2080mmmountGen2 fits Gen 2 Elite Woodworker, Journeyman and Foreman machines with the Z-20 slider, and excludes Original, X-35, X-50, Gen 1 Elite and wall-mounted machines.[7]
Onefinity's mount-size article says the Z-20 ships with a 65 mm or 80 mm mount preinstalled, and that switching sizes later means buying a new Z-20 assembly.[8] Read that as guidance for the Gen 1 and earlier Z-20 only, since Onefinity now sells a separate Gen 2 Z-20 mount.
Genmitsu
Genmitsu lists 42 mm and 52 mm spindle mounts for the 4040-PRO, and says its Z carriage supports 65 mm or 69 mm motors with an extra mount.[9] SainSmart's 4040-PRO setup article instead says the 52 mm mount has an internal sleeve for 44 mm motors such as standard 775 motors.[10] The two statements conflict, and neither page explains why, so check which sleeve your machine has.
The PROVerXL 4030 V2 ships with an extra 65 mm spindle holder.[11]
FoxAlien
FoxAlien lists its 65 and 69 mm Z clamp for the Masuter Pro, Masuter 3, 4040-XE, XE-PRO, WM3020, Vasto series and CL-4x4, and states that it is not compatible with the XE-Ultra.[12]
Inventables X-Carve
Inventables' legacy X-Carve 1000 mm instructions mount a DeWalt 611 router in the spindle mount, without stating a mount diameter.[13] Its Upgrades collection listed the Z Axis Kit, the 9 mm Belt and Motor Kit and the X-Carve Makita Spindle Mount as sold out when viewed on 2026-10-11.[14] The page makes no discontinuation statement.

| Item | Where to find it | Yours |
|---|---|---|
| Machine and model | Order record, frame label, maker's manual | |
| Z axis or slider version | Order record, maker's parts list, Z assembly | |
| Controller version | Board label (older Shapeoko 3 machines) | |
| Router or spindle now fitted | Motor label | |
| Mount bore | Mount label, or measure the body |
If your machine is old or modified, start with the motor and mount you actually have, then compare them with the maker's current lists. A modified machine is outside every maker's list until the maker says otherwise.
Some holders name the machines they fit. FoxAlien's standard 69 mm Z clamp and its XE-Ultra clamp are separate parts:

Choose the standard 69 mm Z clamp for the Masuter, 4040-XE, XE-PRO, WM3020 or Vasto, and the XE-Ultra clamp only for the XE-Ultra 8080 or XE-Ultra Core.

Questions
How do I find out which Z axis I have?
Check your order record and the maker's parts list for the Z name (for example Onefinity's Z-16 or Z-20, or Carbide 3D's belt-driven Z, HDZ or Z-Plus). Onefinity sells separate 80 mm mounts for the Z-16 and the Gen 2 Z-20, so the slider name decides the part.[6][7]
Will a part for my brand fit my machine?
Only if the part's maker names your machine. Carbide 3D's 80 mm Spindle Mount, for example, fits the Shapeoko 5 Pro and will not fit other Shapeoko machines.[4]
My machine is old or modified: where do I start?
Start with what is on the machine now: the motor, its body diameter and the mount. Then compare those with the maker's current lists. Older Shapeoko 3 controllers (V2.3 or older, shipped before November 2019) need Carbide 3D's updated board for its 65 mm VFD kit.[2]
Is the X-Carve upgrade kit discontinued?
Inventables' Upgrades collection listed the Z Axis Kit, the Belt and Motor Kit and the Makita Spindle Mount as sold out when viewed on 2026-10-11. The page makes no discontinuation statement.[14]
Does the FoxAlien Z clamp fit the XE-Ultra?
No. FoxAlien states its standard 65 and 69 mm Z clamp is not compatible with the XE-Ultra.[12]
