Shapeoko 3: Z axis, spindle kit and workholding fit
What Carbide 3D says fits the Shapeoko 3: the 65 mm VFD kit limits, the controller update, Sweepy 2.0 and clamps without a Hybrid Table.
Also listed as Shapeoko 3 XL, Shapeoko 3 XXL, Shapeoko 3
Short answer
Carbide 3D says its 65 mm VFD Spindle Kit should fit the Shapeoko 3, but it does not recommend the kit on the original belt-driven Z axis, and controllers V2.3 or older need an updated board. The Shapeoko 3 has no Hybrid Table, so Carbide 3D's Crush-It clamps are meant only for an M6 fixture plate here. Sweepy 2.0 fits any Shapeoko Z axis.
Key facts
- Maker and model
- Carbide 3D Shapeoko 3[1]Carbide 3D's kit pages name the Shapeoko 3 without listing XL or XXL sizes separately.
- Z axis or slider
- Original belt-driven Z, Z-Plus or HDZ, depending on the machine[2]Carbide 3D says the Z-Plus on the Shapeoko 3 has no alternate spindle-mount position, and that it prefers the HDZ for the 65 mm VFD kit.

- Other mounts the maker lists

- Mounts and kits the maker excludes
- Carbide 3D does not recommend its 65 mm VFD spindle on a Shapeoko 3 with the original belt-driven Z axis, because of the spindle's weight. Its Crush-It Nutz 'n Bolts kit excludes the Shapeoko 3.[2][3]
- Spindle kits that name it
- Carbide 3D 65 mm VFD Spindle Kit (Carbide 3D says it should fit)[1]Carbide 3D says the kit is not compatible with machines other than the Shapeoko 3, 4, Pro and 5 Pro.
- Supply the maker's kits require
- Carbide 3D: the 65 mm VFD Spindle Kit is 110 V only, does not work on 220 V power and does not work on a GFCI outlet.[1]Quoted from the maker. The kit manual and a qualified electrician decide the circuit; never remove or bypass GFCI protection.
- Collets supplied
- With the current 65 mm VFD kit: 1/8, 1/4 and 3/8 in ER16 collets and an ER16M nut with an M19 thread[4]These come with the spindle kit, not with the machine.
- Table and workholding thread
- No Hybrid Table. Carbide 3D says Crush-It clamps are not intended for the Shapeoko 3 but can be used on a fixture plate with M6 holes, and its Essential Clamps can be used with 1/4 in hardware on your own T-track or threaded inserts.[5][6]Supplying 1/4 in hardware does not make M6 and 1/4-20 threads interchangeable.
- Dust boots that name it
- Carbide 3D Sweepy 2.0, in 65, 69 or 80 mm collar sizes[7]Carbide 3D says Sweepy 2.0 works with any Shapeoko Z axis without adapters. Pick the collar for the installed motor.
- Maker support for third-party parts
- Not confirmed
- Revisions and conflicts
- Shapeoko 3 controllers V2.3 or older (shipped before November 2019) need Carbide 3D's updated Carbide Motion PCB with enclosure for the 65 mm VFD kit. The kit itself moved from ER11 (V1, 1/4 in ER11 collet pre-installed) to ER16 in May 2025.[2][8]Carbide 3D's V1 pages state no power, voltage, RPM or machine list, so the V2 ratings are not carried over to V1.

Watch out for
- Carbide 3D does not recommend its 65 mm VFD spindle on the original belt-driven Z axis because of the spindle's weight.
- A Shapeoko 3 with a V2.3 or older controller (shipped before November 2019) needs Carbide 3D's updated board, sold separately, for the 65 mm VFD kit.
- There is no Hybrid Table on the Shapeoko 3: Carbide 3D says Crush-It clamps are for an M6 fixture plate here, and its Nutz 'n Bolts kit excludes this machine.
- The Z-Plus on the Shapeoko 3 has no alternate spindle-mount position, so the raise-the-mount step in Carbide 3D's guide does not apply.
This is a reference for owners, not a machine recommendation. Fit is stated only where Carbide 3D names the Shapeoko 3. For mount sizes, see 65 mm mounts.
Questions
Can I put the Carbide 3D 65 mm VFD spindle on a Shapeoko 3?
Carbide 3D says the kit should fit the Shapeoko 3, but it does not recommend it on the original belt-driven Z axis because of the spindle's weight, and it prefers the HDZ. Controllers V2.3 or older also need the updated Carbide Motion PCB.[1][2]
Do Crush-It clamps work on a Shapeoko 3?
Carbide 3D says Crush-It clamps are not intended for the Shapeoko 3 because it has no Hybrid Table, but they can be used on a fixture plate with M6 holes.[5]
Which dust boot does Carbide 3D name for the Shapeoko 3?
Sweepy 2.0. Carbide 3D says it works with any Shapeoko Z axis without adapters and sells it with 65, 69 and 80 mm collars, so choose the collar for the motor you run.[7]
