Short answer
An 80 mm upgrade is specific to the machine and the Z version. Carbide 3D supports its 80 mm kit on the Shapeoko 5 Pro only; Onefinity sells one 80 mm mount for the original Z-16 and another for the Gen 2 Z-20. Check the mount maker's list for your exact machine, then plan for the dust boot and hose that the larger spindle needs.
Shapeoko: 5 Pro only
Carbide 3D's 80 mm spindle kit guide lists the Shapeoko 5 Pro as the only supported machine.[1] Its standalone 80 mm Spindle Mount will not fit other Shapeoko machines and ships with four M6 x 35 mm bolts.[2]
The kit includes an 80 mm dovetail spindle mount, a water-cooled spindle, an enclosed 220 V VFD, a Shapeoko 5 Pro gas strut kit, an 80 mm Sweepy 2.0 dust boot and a CW3000 chiller.[3] Carbide 3D says the 80 mm mount sits higher on the 5 Pro than the 65 mm mount.[3]
So, can you put an 80 mm spindle on a Shapeoko 4? Not with Carbide 3D's kit or mount: neither names the Shapeoko 4. Carbide 3D also says the Z-Plus on the Shapeoko 3, 4 and Pro has no alternate spindle-mount position.[4]
Onefinity: two mounts, two sliders
| Mount SKU | Fits | Excludes |
|---|---|---|
| 1z1680mmspindlemount | Z-16 original slider: Original, X-35 and X-50 machines[5] | Elite series, wall-mounted machines |
| z2080mmmountGen2 | Gen 2 Elite Woodworker, Journeyman and Foreman with the Z-20[6] | Original, X-35, X-50, Gen 1 Elite, wall-mounted machines |
For the Gen 1 and earlier Z-20, Onefinity's mount-size article says the Z-20 ships with a 65 mm or 80 mm mount preinstalled, and switching sizes later means buying a new Z-20 assembly.[7] Do not apply that to the Gen 2, which has its own mount.
LongMill
Sienci's LongMill router mount is offered in 52, 65, 71 and 80 mm sizes.[8] Sienci states that its 71 mm and 80 mm LongMill mounts will not work with the MK2 dust shoe.[8] Plan a different boot if you move to 80 mm.
PwnCNC mounts
PwnCNC's Spindle Mount comes with a 65 mm or 80 mm bore and both share the same external dimensions.[9] Machines other than PwnCNC's Dominator need a separately sold, machine-specific adapter plate.[9]
Knock-on parts
The boot follows the spindle. Onefinity's Suckit SM fits 80 mm spindles only and will not work with 65 mm spindles or the Makita router.[10] Carbide 3D's 80 mm kit already includes an 80 mm Sweepy 2.0.[3]
