Questions and answers

Short answers to the questions readers ask most. Each one links to the page that explains it in full, with sources.

Featherboards and hold-downs

Will this featherboard fit my router table?

Check how it mounts against what your table has. Kreg's True-FLEX uses Wedge-Lock hardware for 3/8 x 3/4 in miter slots and also mounts in T-slots; Bow's FeatherPRO comes with a 3/4 in miter bar and can mount to T-track; JessEm's Clear-Cut guides mount to 1/4 in T-slot router fences. More in Featherboards, hold-downs and starting pins: fit and what makers say

Do featherboards stop kickback?

The makers we read say they are not safety devices on their own. Kreg's True-FLEX manual states the featherboard is not an anti-kickback or safety device, and Bosch's RA1181 manual says featherboards are not intended to hold the work in place alone while the bit turns. More in Featherboards, hold-downs and starting pins: fit and what makers say

What is a starting pin for?

On the Bosch RA1181, Bosch says the starter pin replaces the fence for routing curves, only with bits that have pilot bearings, always with the starter pin guard, feeding right to left across the front of the bit. Follow your own table's manual. See the starting pin guide. More in Featherboards, hold-downs and starting pins: fit and what makers say

Which featherboard fits a 3/4 in miter slot?

Both, by their makers' listings. Kreg lists the True-FLEX for 3/8 x 3/4 in miter slots with a wedge lock, and Bow lists a 3/4 in AnchorPRO bar for 3/8 x 3/4 in slots on the FeatherPRO. More in Kreg True-FLEX vs Bow FeatherPRO featherboards: mounts and hardware

Which one fits my T-track?

Bow publishes its T-bolt as 5/16-18 with a 0.090 x 0.45 x 0.725 in head, so you can compare it with your track. Kreg lists a T-track bolt, washer and knob but gives no head size in the manual. More in Kreg True-FLEX vs Bow FeatherPRO featherboards: mounts and hardware

Is either one safer?

We do not rank them on safety. Kreg's manual says the True-FLEX is not an anti-kickback or safety device and does not replace the tool's safety devices; we make no safety claim for either featherboard. More in Kreg True-FLEX vs Bow FeatherPRO featherboards: mounts and hardware

Can I buy the True-FLEX as a pair?

Yes. Kreg sells the True-FLEX as the PRS3010 single and the PRS3020 twin pack. More in Kreg True-FLEX vs Bow FeatherPRO featherboards: mounts and hardware

Will a featherboard fit my router table's miter slot?

If your slot is 3/4 in wide and 3/8 in deep and the featherboard's maker lists that slot. Kreg's True-FLEX and Bow's FeatherPRO and FeatherDUO are listed for 3/8 x 3/4 in slots. More in Featherboard mounting: miter slot, T-track or fence slot

Can I mount a featherboard on my fence?

If the fence has a T-slot or T-track that takes the featherboard's bolts. Bosch's RA1181 fence featherboard uses 1/4-20 carriage bolts in the fence's top T-slot; Kreg's True-FLEX uses a T-track bolt, washer and knob. More in Featherboard mounting: miter slot, T-track or fence slot

What is the difference between a featherboard and a roller guide?

A featherboard presses the work with flexible fingers angled toward the feed. A roller guide such as JessEm's Clear-Cut presses with rollers; JessEm says its one-way bearings turn only in the feed direction. More in Featherboard mounting: miter slot, T-track or fence slot

Does a featherboard make my router table safe?

Kreg's manual says the True-FLEX is not an anti-kickback or safety device, and Bosch says featherboards are not meant to hold the work alone near the bit. See our featherboard placement guide for the makers' limits. More in Featherboard mounting: miter slot, T-track or fence slot

Where do featherboards go on a router table?

Kreg's True-FLEX manual allows them horizontally in the miter slot and vertically in a fence T-slot at the infeed and outfeed ends of the bit, never pressing directly against the side of the bit or straight down over it. More in Featherboard placement on a router table, and what they cannot do

Do featherboards prevent kickback?

Kreg's manual says the True-FLEX is not an anti-kickback or safety device, and Bosch says featherboards are not intended to hold the work alone while it touches the bit. We make no kickback claim for any featherboard. More in Featherboard placement on a router table, and what they cannot do

How tight should a featherboard be?

Kreg says to set the finger tips 1/16 in less than the workpiece width or thickness from the fence or table, with the feed-direction arrow pointing the way the work moves. Other makers may give different instructions. More in Featherboard placement on a router table, and what they cannot do

Can I use horizontal and vertical featherboards together?

Kreg's manual says to use both only when the workpiece is wide enough for a push stick to pass. More in Featherboard placement on a router table, and what they cannot do

Do table saw featherboard rules apply on a router table?

Not automatically. Kreg gives separate placement rules for table saws and router tables in the True-FLEX manual; follow the router-table section. More in Featherboard placement on a router table, and what they cannot do

What is a starting pin on a router table for?

Bosch says the RA1181's starter pin replaces the fence for routing curves, used only with pilot-bearing bits and always with the starter pin guard. It is not permission to rout freehand. More in The starting pin: what the plate makers say it is for

Can I use a starting pin with any bit?

No. Bosch says to use the RA1181 pin only with bits that have pilot bearings, and Kreg's plate manual says to use its starting pin only with guide-bearing bits. More in The starting pin: what the plate makers say it is for

What thread is a starting pin?

On the Bosch RA1181 plate, the pin threads into a 1/4-28 hole. That is Bosch's figure for that plate only; we found no cross-brand thread rule. More in The starting pin: what the plate makers say it is for

Which insert plates come with a starting pin?

Kreg's PRS4034, PRS4036 and PRS4038 plates (a brass pin), JessEm's Rout-R-Plate, Woodpeckers' AI890 plate and POWERTEC's 71850 plate all list one. More in The starting pin: what the plate makers say it is for

Which of these is safest?

We rank none of them for safety. Kreg's manual says its featherboard is not an anti-kickback or safety device, and Bosch says featherboards are not intended to hold the work in place alone while the bit turns. More in Featherboards with a stated slot and track fit

Do I need T-track to use these?

No. Kreg's True-FLEX and Bow's FeatherPRO and FeatherDUO also mount in a 3/8 x 3/4 in miter slot, with Kreg's wedge lock or Bow's AnchorPRO bar. More in Featherboards with a stated slot and track fit

Where are JessEm's Clear-Cut guides?

Not in our approved catalog yet. JessEm's Clear-Cut Stock Guides are roller guides that mount to standard 1/4 in T-slot router fences, for router tables only. More in Featherboards with a stated slot and track fit

Insert plates

What size insert plate do I need?

The one your table's opening was cut for. INCRA says there is no industry-standard opening size, though many plates, such as Kreg's and Woodpeckers', are 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 x 3/8 in. Measure your current plate or opening, including thickness and corner radius, before you buy. More in Router table insert plates: outline, thickness, hole pattern and rings

Predrilled or blank?

Predrilled if the plate maker lists your exact router, blank if it does not. Kreg's PRS4036 is predrilled for the Bosch 1617 and Porter-Cable 690 and 890 series; its undrilled PRS4038 has molded center points for two patterns. Follow the plate maker's drilling instructions. More in Router table insert plates: outline, thickness, hole pattern and rings

Do I need plate levelers?

Only if your opening has straight sides with no rabbeted ledge. Kreg's instructions describe both options: a rabbeted opening, or a straight-sided one with its separately sold PRS3040 levelers, which attach under the top. More in Router table insert plates: outline, thickness, hole pattern and rings

Which plate fits a Triton TRA001?

Kreg's PRS4034 is predrilled for the Triton TRA001 and MOF001, Woodpeckers lists its AITRITON plate for the TRA-001, and INCRA's chart lists the MLP7518-AL plate for the TRA-001/TRA-002. More in Router table insert plates: outline, thickness, hole pattern and rings

Can I adjust my router's height from above the table?

If your router has a reachable height adjuster and your plate has an access hole for it. INCRA's chart notes the hole may need to be drilled for several routers, including the Bosch 1617/1618. More in Above-table height adjustment: plate access holes and collars

Why does my plate have no hole for the adjustment wrench?

Some patterns are made without one. Woodpeckers says its AI890 has no above-the-table tool hole for the Milwaukee 5615 and 5616-20, and INCRA says access may need to be drilled for several routers. More in Above-table height adjustment: plate access holes and collars

Do I need a lift for above-table adjustment?

Not always. Bosch says the plates on its RA1171 and RA1181 tables support above-table adjustment, and Triton's TRA001 has a table winder. A lift is the route when your router has no reachable adjuster. More in Above-table height adjustment: plate access holes and collars

Is aluminum better than phenolic for a router plate?

No source we found measures one against the other. Makers state material, outline and thickness; Woodpeckers' 'less prone to warp or flex' is its own claim. Choose on fit first. More in Aluminum vs phenolic insert plates: what makers state

Do plates sag?

Any plate can deflect under a router, but no maker in our sources publishes a deflection figure and we found no independent measurement. How the plate is supported matters too. More in Aluminum vs phenolic insert plates: what makers state

What thickness should a plate be?

The thickness your table opening is cut for. INCRA, Woodpeckers, Kreg, POWERTEC and SpeTool state 3/8 in, and JessEm's Mast-R-Top is cut for a 3/8 in plate. More in Aluminum vs phenolic insert plates: what makers state

Should I buy a predrilled or blank plate?

Predrilled, if the plate maker lists your router. A blank plate is for routers no predrilled plate lists, and you drill it following the maker's instructions. More in Predrilled vs blank insert plates

My router is not listed: can I use a blank plate?

Possibly. INCRA says its undrilled plate suits unlisted routers whose fasteners sit fully outside a 2-1/16 in (53 mm) radius from the collet centerline; that is INCRA's rule, so check with your plate maker. More in Predrilled vs blank insert plates

Do predrilled plates come with screws?

Kreg includes router mounting screws only with its predrilled plates. INCRA says its included screws may not match every compatible router. More in Predrilled vs blank insert plates

Does the POWERTEC 71850 fit my router?

We could not read a clear router list from POWERTEC's page, so ask POWERTEC. Its stated outline is 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 in, 3/8 in thick. More in Predrilled vs blank insert plates

Which plate fits a Porter-Cable 690 or Bosch 1617?

Kreg lists its PRS4036, INCRA its MLP690890-AL and Woodpeckers its AI890. INCRA notes above-table access may need drilling for the Bosch 1617/1618. More in Router base hole patterns: which predrilled plate lists your router

Which plate fits a Triton TRA001?

Kreg lists its PRS4034, INCRA its MLP7518-AL and Woodpeckers its AITRITON version. More in Router base hole patterns: which predrilled plate lists your router

Is a 3-hole pattern the same across brands?

Do not assume so. Each maker groups its own list; Kreg calls its three-hole group Pattern 1, and other makers use different plate numbers. Check your router on the maker's chart for the plate you are buying. More in Router base hole patterns: which predrilled plate lists your router

Which plate fits a Porter-Cable 7518?

Kreg puts the 7518 in Pattern 2 of its undrilled PRS4038, and INCRA lists its MLP7518-AL plate. It is not on Woodpeckers' AI890 list. More in Router base hole patterns: which predrilled plate lists your router

Do I need plate levelers?

Only if your opening has no rabbeted ledge, or your plate maker expects them. Kreg's plates mount either in a rabbet or on its PRS3040 levelers. More in Plate levelers, ledges and snugger screws

Will Kreg levelers work with another brand's plate?

Kreg's Q&A says the PRS3040 levelers work only with Kreg plates, and its instructions tell users of other plates to check their plate's instructions. More in Plate levelers, ledges and snugger screws

My table top is thinner than 1 in: what screws?

Kreg says the supplied 1-1/4 in screws are for tops at least 1 in thick, and to use your own shorter screws on thinner tops. More in Plate levelers, ledges and snugger screws

What does a snugger do?

It takes up side-to-side play between the plate and the opening. JessEm's Mast-R-Lift II manual supplies adjustable snugger bars for this. More in Plate levelers, ledges and snugger screws

Is there a standard router table plate size?

No. INCRA says there is no industry-standard opening size, although 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 in is the outline most makers in our sources list. More in Router table plate sizes: 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 vs 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 in

What size plate does a Rockler or Bench Dog table take?

We could not confirm it from Rockler's or Bench Dog's own pages. INCRA and JessEm both sell 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 in versions, and INCRA says its 9-1/4 in Mast-R-Lift II versions are not compatible with Rockler or Bench Dog tables. More in Router table plate sizes: 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 vs 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 in

Is a 235 x 298 mm plate the same as 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 in?

It is the same nominal plate rounded to whole millimeters. Exact arithmetic gives 234.95 x 298.45 mm; that is a conversion, not a fit allowance. More in Router table plate sizes: 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 vs 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 in

How thick is a router plate?

INCRA, Woodpeckers, Kreg, POWERTEC and SpeTool each state 3/8 in. JessEm's pages for the Mast-R-Lift II 02120 and the Rout-R-Plate state no thickness. More in Router table plate sizes: 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 vs 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 in

Does JessEm's metric Mast-R-Lift II use a bigger plate?

No. JessEm lists the metric 02123 with the same 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 in top plate as the 02120. More in Router table plate sizes: 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 vs 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 in

Which plate here fits a Porter-Cable 7518?

Kreg's undrilled PRS4038, drilled to its Pattern 2, which Kreg lists for the Porter-Cable 7518, 7519, 7538 and 7539. More in Insert plates with a published outline and router pattern

Will these plates fit my table?

Only if your opening matches. INCRA says there is no industry-standard opening size, so compare your opening's outline, thickness and corners with the plate maker's figures first. More in Insert plates with a published outline and router pattern

Why is the POWERTEC 71850 not here?

POWERTEC lists the 71850 at 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 x 3/8 in, but the router-fit wording we read was unclear, so it does not meet this list's router-pattern test, and it is not in our approved catalog. More in Insert plates with a published outline and router pattern

Insert and reducer rings

Are insert rings interchangeable between brands?

Not on any maker's word we found. Each maker lists its rings for its own plates and lifts: Kreg's Level-Loc set for Kreg's plate and lift, JessEm's Tab-Lock set for JessEm plates and lifts with the Tab-Lock system. Buy rings for the system your plate uses. More in Insert and reducer rings: the system your plate takes, then the opening

What ring size for my bit?

Follow your ring maker's rule. Woodpeckers recommends an opening about 1/8 to 1/4 in larger than the bit for its rings; Bosch says the difference on its RA1181 must be no less than 1/16 in on a side. Neither is a rule for other systems. More in Insert and reducer rings: the system your plate takes, then the opening

Can I use guide bushings in my router table?

Only if the plate or table maker provides for them. Kreg's plates include a 1-3/16 in ring that accepts standard universal-style guide bushings, while Bosch says its RA1171 and RA1181 tables do not accept any template guides. More in Insert and reducer rings: the system your plate takes, then the opening

Will new INCRA rings fit an old plate?

Not always. INCRA says its CleanSweep rings fit only 2006-or-newer INCRA plates and lifts with a 3-5/8 in opening through the bottom, and not gray phenolic MagnaLOCK plates or first-generation gold Mast-R-Lifts with a 3-1/2 in opening. More in Insert and reducer rings: the system your plate takes, then the opening

Can I use a guide bushing in my router table?

Only if your plate's maker supplies or sells a ring made to hold one, and the table maker does not rule it out. Kreg's plates include a 1-3/16 in guide-bushing ring; Bosch says its RA1171 and RA1181 tables take no template guides. More in Guide bushings in a router table: which rings and tables take them

Does the Bosch RA1181 take template guides?

No. Bosch states that the RA1181 and RA1171 router tables do not accept any template guides. More in Guide bushings in a router table: which rings and tables take them

Is a Porter-Cable-style bushing the same as a universal-style one?

Each maker names its own: Kreg says universal-style, INCRA says Porter-Cable style. We found no maker statement that equates the two, so check the ring maker's wording against the bushing you own. More in Guide bushings in a router table: which rings and tables take them

Does INCRA's guide-bushing ring include the bushing?

No. INCRA says the CS-MLRGUIDE ring comes without the bushing and lock ring, and it has the same plate-generation limits as the CleanSweep rings. More in Guide bushings in a router table: which rings and tables take them

What size insert ring do I need for my bit?

The smallest ring in your plate's system whose opening clears the bit's cutting diameter by your ring maker's margin. Woodpeckers suggests about 1/8 to 1/4 in larger than the bit for its rings; Bosch says at least 1/16 in per side on the RA1181. More in Which ring opening for your bit diameter: what makers say

How much clearance should a ring have around the bit?

Use your own ring maker's figure. There is no single rule across makers: Woodpeckers and Bosch publish different ones, each for its own rings or table. More in Which ring opening for your bit diameter: what makers say

Can I enlarge a ring opening?

Bosch's RA1181 manual says not to alter the insert ring or the plate's bit hole. For other plates, follow that maker's instructions; Kreg sells a blank ring for a custom opening, but we give no cutting steps. More in Which ring opening for your bit diameter: what makers say

What do I use for a bit larger than my biggest ring?

On the Bosch RA1181, Bosch says to use no ring for bits over 2-5/8 up to 3-1/2 in, and never to use bits over 3-1/2 in on that table. On other tables, check the plate maker's largest stated opening and its limit. More in Which ring opening for your bit diameter: what makers say

What sizes come in a router ring set?

It depends on the maker and system. Kreg's PRS3050 adds 3/4, 1-3/8, 1-5/8 and 2-1/8 in plus a blank; Woodpeckers' TLRSET-ML has a solid ring and seven openings from 3/4 to 2-3/8 in; INCRA's MLRINGSET-3.5 runs from 3/8 to 3-3/8 in. More in Insert ring set sizes by system: a lookup table

Which set adds a 3/4 in ring for my Kreg plate?

Kreg's PRS3050 Level-Loc set, which Kreg lists for its Precision Router Table Insert Plate and Precision Router Lift. Kreg's plates and the PRS5000 come with 1, 1-3/16 and 2-5/8 in rings only. More in Insert ring set sizes by system: a lookup table

What is a blank ring for?

Kreg says its blank Level-Loc ring is for making a custom opening. Follow Kreg's instructions for that; we give no cutting steps. More in Insert ring set sizes by system: a lookup table

Can I mix rings from two makers' sets in one plate?

No maker in our sources says so. Each set is listed for its own maker's plates and lifts. More in Insert ring set sizes by system: a lookup table

Are router table insert rings interchangeable between brands?

Not on any maker's word we found. Each maker lists its rings for its own plates and lifts, and no maker in our sources says Twist Lock, Tab-Lock, Level-Loc, MagnaLOCK or Snap-Lock rings swap between systems. More in Insert ring systems: Twist Lock, Tab-Lock, Level-Loc and MagnaLOCK

How do I tell which ring system my plate uses?

Find the plate or lift maker's name and model, look at how the ring locks (twist, quarter-turn or magnets), and check the manual's parts list. Then buy rings the same maker lists for that plate. More in Insert ring systems: Twist Lock, Tab-Lock, Level-Loc and MagnaLOCK

Will new INCRA CleanSweep rings fit my old INCRA plate?

Only if it is a 2006-or-newer INCRA plate or lift with a 3-5/8 in opening through the bottom. INCRA says they do not fit gray phenolic MagnaLOCK plates or first-generation gold Mast-R-Lifts with a 3-1/2 in opening. More in Insert ring systems: Twist Lock, Tab-Lock, Level-Loc and MagnaLOCK

What is the outside diameter of a Kreg Level-Loc ring?

Kreg's own answers differ: its PRS3050 page gives 3.85 in in one place and 3-13/16 in in another. Treat it as unresolved, and never use either figure as a machining dimension. More in Insert ring systems: Twist Lock, Tab-Lock, Level-Loc and MagnaLOCK

Do Rockler Snap-Lock rings fit other plates?

We could not confirm Snap-Lock ring openings or fit from Rockler's own pages, so we make no claim about them. Check Rockler's listing for your plate. More in Insert ring systems: Twist Lock, Tab-Lock, Level-Loc and MagnaLOCK

Can I use Kreg rings in a Woodpeckers plate?

Do INCRA's newer rings fit older plates?

INCRA says its CleanSweep rings fit only 2006-or-newer INCRA plates and lifts with a 3-5/8 in bottom opening, not gray phenolic MagnaLOCK plates or first-generation gold Mast-R-Lifts. More in Insert ring sets, by the plate system they fit

Measuring and buying

How do I measure my router table plate?

Measure the plate you have, or the opening: length, width, thickness and corner radius, then compare with the part maker's figures. INCRA says there is no industry-standard opening size. The measuring guide has a worksheet. More in Measure your router and table, then buy: sellers, returns and imports

Are router parts on AliExpress genuine?

A listing title cannot tell you. Check whether the store is the brand's own, compare the model and variant with the maker's list, and read the return terms. AliExpress's Free Returns apply only to items marked with its icon. See the buying checklist. More in Measure your router and table, then buy: sellers, returns and imports

Will I pay duty on router table parts shipped to the US or Canada?

Possibly. CBP says goods of all countries lost duty-free de minimis treatment from August 29, 2025, regardless of value. For courier shipments into Canada, CBSA remits duties and taxes up to CAD 20 from most countries, and up to CAD 150 duty and CAD 40 tax for goods from the US or Mexico. More in Measure your router and table, then buy: sellers, returns and imports

Can I return a plate after I drill it?

No source we found states a rule for drilled plates. AliExpress's Free Returns terms require an item to keep its original quality with intact packaging, and Amazon may charge a fee for signs of use. Read the seller's terms before you drill. More in Measure your router and table, then buy: sellers, returns and imports

Are router lifts on AliExpress genuine?

A listing title cannot tell you. Check whether the store is the brand's own, compare the exact model and variant with the maker's list, and read the return and Buyer Protection terms. We call no store 'official' or 'authorized' from its listing. More in Buying router table parts on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check

How do I know the seller is the brand?

Read 'Ships from / Sold by' on Amazon, or the store name on AliExpress, and compare it with the brand's own dealer information where it has one. JessEm runs a dealer locator, for example. A brand byline on a listing does not name the seller. More in Buying router table parts on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check

Will I pay duty on router table parts?

Possibly. CBP says goods of all countries have been ineligible for duty-free de minimis treatment since August 29, 2025, and confirmed in February 2026 that this continues. In Canada, CBSA's courier remission covers goods of CAD 20 or less from most countries, and up to CAD 150 duty and CAD 40 tax from the US or Mexico. More in Buying router table parts on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check

Can I return a plate after drilling it?

No source we found states a rule. AliExpress's Free Returns terms require an item to keep its original quality and functioning with intact packaging, and Amazon may charge a fee of up to 50% for signs of use. Read the seller's terms before you drill. More in Buying router table parts on Amazon or AliExpress: what to check

How do I measure my router table plate?

Measure the plate you have, or the opening if there is no plate: length, width and thickness, then the corner radius. Compare those with the part maker's stated figures. INCRA says there is no industry-standard opening size. More in Measure your router table and router before buying parts

How do I find my router's motor diameter?

Read the model number on your router's model plate, then look it up in the lift maker's chart. JessEm's Mast-R-Lift II manual, for example, lists the Porter-Cable 7518 at 4.2 in and the Milwaukee 5615/5616/5619 at 3.32 in. Do not guess a clamp size from a tape reading. More in Measure your router table and router before buying parts

How do I measure a miter slot?

Measure its width at several points along its length and its depth, and look for a wider T-slot at the bottom. INCRA's checker gives a typical 3/4 in slot as 0.740 to 0.770 in wide, at least 0.375 in deep. Compare your numbers with the gauge maker's stated range. More in Measure your router table and router before buying parts

My numbers don't match any maker's list. What now?

Ask the part maker before you buy, with your router's model and your measurements. A part that is not listed for your router or table is not confirmed to fit. More in Measure your router table and router before buying parts

Does a router plate need a UL or CSA mark?

Those marks concern electrical products. Health Canada's advice on CSA, cUL and cETL marks is about products that plug into an outlet, which a passive plate, ring or fence does not. Check the mark on the router itself. More in Router table safety: marks, standards, recalls and the manual

How do I check if my router has been recalled?

Search the CPSC recalls page, which filters records by date, hazard, product category and country of manufacture, and read any notice's model and date-code details. The 2014 Porter-Cable notice, for example, covers listed models made from 1990 to April 2014. More in Router table safety: marks, standards, recalls and the manual

Is it safe to mount a hand-held router in a table?

We cannot certify any combination. IEC 62841-2-17 covers hand-held routers and treats a hand-held tool mounted unaltered on a support or stand as a transportable tool under the relevant Part 3. Your router's and table's manuals govern how to mount and use it. More in Router table safety: marks, standards, recalls and the manual

What causes router kickback according to OSHA?

OSHA lists feeding stock into the tool too abruptly or in the wrong direction among the causes of router kickback, along with poor-quality lumber and stock poorly fixed to the template. More in Router table safety: marks, standards, recalls and the manual

My table is not in the list. What now?

Measure the opening, plate thickness, corner radius and miter slot yourself and compare them with each part maker's figures; ask the part maker if nothing matches. The measuring guide has a worksheet. More in Router table finder: plate opening, rings and miter slot

Do all 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 in tables take the same lifts?

No. INCRA says tables without a rabbeted ledge, such as Kreg and JessEm tables, need its CleanSweep Table Adapter to support its Mast-R-Lift II, and that the lift is not compatible with Rockler or Bench Dog tables. More in Router table finder: plate opening, rings and miter slot

Can I use guide bushings in a Bosch router table?

Bosch states that its RA1171 and RA1181 router tables do not accept any template guides. More in Router table finder: plate opening, rings and miter slot

Miter gauges, T-track and stops

What size is a router table miter slot?

Often 3/4 in wide by 3/8 in deep nominal, but measure yours. Bosch says the RA1181's slot works with most table saw miter gauges that measure 3/4 x 3/8 in. INCRA's checker gives 0.740 to 0.770 in as the actual width range of a typical 3/4 in slot. More in Miter gauges, T-track, stops and setup bars for router tables

Will my table-saw miter gauge fit?

It may, if the slot matches the gauge's range. Bosch says most stationary table saw miter gauges that measure 3/4 x 3/8 in work in the RA1181's slot. INCRA states its Miter 1000SE adjusts to actual slot widths of 0.740 to 0.765 in. More in Miter gauges, T-track, stops and setup bars for router tables

What bolts fit T-track?

The thread and head size the track maker states. Milescraft's TrackMaster 4023 kit, for example, includes one 1/4-20 T-bolt and three M8 x 1.25 T-bolts with different head sizes. Compare head size with your track's channel. See T-track bolts and stops. More in Miter gauges, T-track, stops and setup bars for router tables

What are setup bars for?

They are fixed-size references. Kreg lists its PRS3400 bars, seven sizes from 1/8 to 1/2 in, for setting bit or blade height, checking cut depth and setting the bit-to-fence distance. Kreg publishes no tolerance for them. More in Miter gauges, T-track, stops and setup bars for router tables

Do I need a coping sled or a miter gauge?

It depends on your table and stock. The coping sleds in our sources ride along the router fence, so they work on a table without a miter slot; a miter gauge needs a slot its maker's range fits. More in Miter gauge vs coping sled on a router table

Does a coping sled need a miter slot?

Not the two in our sources. Woodpeckers says the COPESLED1 does not use the miter slot, and WoodRiver says its AWR-BCS tracks along the router table fence rather than the slot. More in Miter gauge vs coping sled on a router table

Can I lock a miter bar in the slot for a jig?

Not with INCRA's Miter Slider SE: INCRA says it is not recommended for stationary jigs that must be locked in a slot, and recommends its standard aluminum Miter Slider for that. More in Miter gauge vs coping sled on a router table

How wide a board can a coping sled hold?

Woodpeckers says the COPESLED1 takes material up to 5-1/2 in wide and gives no maximum thickness. WoodRiver says the AWR-BCS clamps stock up to 6 in wide and 1-1/8 in thick. More in Miter gauge vs coping sled on a router table

What are router table setup bars?

Bars of fixed, known sizes that you stand next to the bit or between the bit and fence as a height or distance reference. Kreg's PRS3400 set has seven anodized aluminum bars from 1/8 to 1/2 in in 1/16 in steps. More in Setup bars for bit height and fence distance

Are setup bars accurate?

Kreg publishes no tolerance or accuracy figure for the PRS3400 bars, so we cannot say how close each bar is to its marked size. More in Setup bars for bit height and fence distance

Do I need setup bars if my lift has a dial?

A dial moves the bit by a known amount from wherever it starts; a bar gives you a fixed size to set it to. Many readers use the bar to set a starting height and the dial for small changes. Neither replaces a test cut. More in Setup bars for bit height and fence distance

Do setup bars come in metric sizes?

Kreg lists metric equivalents of 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 12 mm for its seven PRS3400 bars. More in Setup bars for bit height and fence distance

What size is a router table miter slot?

The gauges and featherboards in our sources are made for a slot 3/4 in wide and 3/8 in deep, with or without a T-slot at the bottom. Bosch says the RA1181's slot works with most stationary table saw miter gauges of that size. Measure your own slot to confirm. More in The 3/4 x 3/8 in miter slot: actual widths, T-slots and fit

Will my table saw miter gauge fit my router table?

If your router table's slot is 3/4 x 3/8 in and its actual width falls inside the gauge maker's range, it should be within the maker's stated fit. Bosch says the RA1181 slot works with most stationary table saw miter gauges that size; no miter gauge is supplied with it. More in The 3/4 x 3/8 in miter slot: actual widths, T-slots and fit

What is a T-slot miter slot?

A slot with a wider channel at the bottom, so a bar with a T-shaped foot or retaining clips cannot lift out. INCRA describes its gauges as fitting slots with or without a 15/16 in wide T-slot. More in The 3/4 x 3/8 in miter slot: actual widths, T-slots and fit

My slot measures 0.760 in. Which gauges fit?

Those whose maker range includes 0.760 in. INCRA's Miter 1000SE and Miter Slider SE adjust from 0.740 to 0.765 in, and INCRA's Miter 3000SE checker lists 0.740 to 0.770 in, so all three include it. More in The 3/4 x 3/8 in miter slot: actual widths, T-slots and fit

What size bolts fit T-track?

The ones whose head fits your track's channel and whose thread matches your knob. Bow publishes a 5/16-18 T-bolt head of 0.090 x 0.45 x 0.725 in; Milescraft's 4023 kit has one 1/4-20 and three M8 x 1.25 T-bolts. Compare the head size with your own track. More in T-track bolts, knobs and stops: thread and head sizes

Is 1/4-20 the same as M6?

No. 1/4-20 is an inch thread (1/4 in diameter, 20 threads per inch); M6 is a metric thread (6 mm diameter). They are different thread systems and do not interchange. More in T-track bolts, knobs and stops: thread and head sizes

Will a fence stop fit any fence?

No. JessEm says its Router Fence Stop fits the JessEm TA Fence, Mast-R-Fence III and Mast-R-Fence II, not the original Mast-R-Fence. Check any stop against the fence its maker names. More in T-track bolts, knobs and stops: thread and head sizes

Do Rockler's universal T-track bolts fit other track?

We could not confirm that from Rockler's own page, so we make no claim. Check Rockler's listing for the track it names. More in T-track bolts, knobs and stops: thread and head sizes

Will these fit the Bosch RA1181 slot?

Bosch says the RA1181's slot works with most table saw miter gauges that measure 3/4 x 3/8 in, and supplies none. Both gauges here are sold for 3/4 x 3/8 in slots; measure yours to confirm. More in Miter gauges, sleds and setup bars for 3/4 x 3/8 in slots

Where are the setup bars and coping sleds?

None is in our approved catalog yet. Kreg's PRS3400 setup bars come in seven sizes from 1/8 to 1/2 in, and Woodpeckers' and WoodRiver's coping sleds ride the router table fence rather than the miter slot. More in Miter gauges, sleds and setup bars for 3/4 x 3/8 in slots

What if my slot measures wider than 3/4 in?

Compare it with each gauge maker's stated range. INCRA's checker gives a typical 3/4 in slot as 0.740 to 0.770 in wide, while its Miter 1000SE adjusts to 0.740 to 0.765 in; a reading outside a gauge's range means it is not confirmed to fit. More in Miter gauges, sleds and setup bars for 3/4 x 3/8 in slots

Router lifts

Will any router fit a router lift?

No. A lift's carriage clamps specific motor bodies, and each maker publishes its own list. Kreg's Q&A, for example, says the DeWalt 625 will not work in its PRS5000. If your router is not on the list for the lift version you are buying, treat it as not confirmed. More in Router lifts: plate outline, motor diameter and the maker's router list

Which lift fits a Porter-Cable 690 or Bosch 1617?

JessEm's Mast-R-Lift II manual groups the Porter-Cable 690/890 and Bosch 1617/1618 at clamp setting F4 for a 3.5 in motor, and JessEm lists both as direct fits for its Rout-R-Lift 3.5XT. Kreg's chart for the PRS5000 is an image we could not read, so we do not list them as Kreg-confirmed. More in Router lifts: plate outline, motor diameter and the maker's router list

Is a 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 in lift standard?

It is common, not standard. INCRA says there is no industry-standard opening size, and JessEm sells the same lift with an 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 in plate (02121). Check your table's opening or plate before you buy. More in Router lifts: plate outline, motor diameter and the maker's router list

Is my Porter-Cable 7518 recalled?

Check its date code against the 2014 CPSC notice. The recall (14-221) covers listed Porter-Cable fixed-base production routers, including the 7518 and 7519, made from 1990 to April 2014, and the 75361 base. Not every 7518 is covered. More in Router lifts: plate outline, motor diameter and the maker's router list

Can I still get parts for a PRL-V2?

INCRA marks the PRL-V2 and its adaptor pads as discontinued. The lift uses MagnaLOCK rings, so ask INCRA which rings and parts are still sold for it. More in Discontinued lifts and motors: PRL-V2, Milwaukee 5625-20 and older tests

Will a new plate fit my Milwaukee 5625?

Some current plates list it: Kreg's PRS4038 Pattern 2 and INCRA's MLP7518-AL both name the Milwaukee 5625. INCRA notes above-table access may need to be drilled. More in Discontinued lifts and motors: PRL-V2, Milwaukee 5625-20 and older tests

Which Rout-R-Lift II model do I have?

Check the model number on your lift. JessEm's manual covers 02310 to 02314 but does not say which motor each model fits, so ask JessEm. More in Discontinued lifts and motors: PRL-V2, Milwaukee 5625-20 and older tests

Is the Milwaukee 5625-20 still made?

Milwaukee lists the 5625-20 as no longer available. More in Discontinued lifts and motors: PRL-V2, Milwaukee 5625-20 and older tests

Is my Porter-Cable 7518 recalled?

Only if it matches the notice: the 2014 CPSC recall covers listed models made from 1990 to April 2014, identified by date code. Check your router's date code against recall 14-221. More in The 2014 Porter-Cable 7518/7519 recall and router lifts

Does the recall apply to the motor in my lift?

The notice covers the listed router models and the 75361 base, and its hazard is the uninsulated base handles. A lift is not a remedy the notice names; if your unit is covered, follow the notice. More in The 2014 Porter-Cable 7518/7519 recall and router lifts

What do I do if mine is covered?

The 2014 notice says to stop using it, unplug it and contact Porter-Cable for a free replacement base with insulated handles. We did not check whether that base is still available. More in The 2014 Porter-Cable 7518/7519 recall and router lifts

Was the recall announced in Canada?

The CPSC notice counts about 7,800 units in Canada, but we did not find a separate Health Canada notice. More in The 2014 Porter-Cable 7518/7519 recall and router lifts

What does 1/16 in per turn mean?

One full turn of the height handle moves the carriage 1/16 in by the screw's design. JessEm's manuals state this for the Mast-R-Lift II and Rout-R-Lift II; it is not a measured accuracy. More in 1/16 in per turn and 0.001 in: reading lift adjustment specs

Is a 0.001 in lift accurate to 0.001 in?

Not necessarily. INCRA's 0.001 in figure is its claim about adjustment capability, and we found no independent measurement of it. More in 1/16 in per turn and 0.001 in: reading lift adjustment specs

What is backlash?

The free play when you reverse an adjustment: the handle turns before the carriage moves. JessEm's 'zero-backlash' wording is a maker claim. More in 1/16 in per turn and 0.001 in: reading lift adjustment specs

Have router lifts been independently tested?

Fine Woodworking reviewed lifts in 2002, 2013 and 2018, and Popular Woodworking reviewed the PRL-V2 in its June 2009 issue. Most models covered are legacy versions, so the results do not transfer to current lifts. More in 1/16 in per turn and 0.001 in: reading lift adjustment specs

Will an INCRA lift fit my Rockler table?

Not the versions on INCRA's Mast-R-Lift II page: INCRA says they are not compatible with Rockler or Bench Dog tables. INCRA says a special 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 in version is sold only through Rockler. More in Router lifts and tables: ledges, adapters and named exclusions

Will a JessEm lift fit a Kreg table?

JessEm does not say so in our sources. INCRA, whose Mast-R-Lift II is made with JessEm, says Kreg and JessEm tables without a rabbeted ledge need its CleanSweep Table Adapter for that lift. More in Router lifts and tables: ledges, adapters and named exclusions

What is a rabbet ledge and does my table need one?

It is a step around the opening that the plate rests on. Kreg's instructions allow either a rabbeted opening or a straight-sided one with Kreg's levelers; your lift maker says which it expects. More in Router lifts and tables: ledges, adapters and named exclusions

Can I put a lift in a homemade table?

Lift makers sell templates or instructions for the opening; JessEm, for example, lists its 03003 template for its plate and lifts. Follow the maker's instructions; we give no cutting steps. More in Router lifts and tables: ledges, adapters and named exclusions

Do I need a router lift?

Not always. A plate works if you are content setting height with the router's own adjuster; a lift adds its own screw mechanism, usually adjusted from above the table. More in Router lift vs insert plate

Can I use my router's fixed base in a plate instead?

Yes, if the plate maker lists your base. Kreg's PRS4036, for example, is predrilled for the Bosch 1617 and Porter-Cable 690 and 890 series. More in Router lift vs insert plate

Does a Triton router need a lift?

Triton describes the TRA001 as having a table winder and says it eliminates the need for expensive lifting mechanisms. That is Triton's claim. Kreg (PRS4034) and Woodpeckers (AITRITON) sell plates drilled for the TRA001. More in Router lift vs insert plate

Is a lift more accurate than a plate?

We found no independent measurement in our sources comparing them. Lift figures such as 1/16 in per turn are the maker's mechanism figures, not measured accuracy. More in Router lift vs insert plate

What diameter is my router motor?

Look up your exact model on the lift maker's chart. JessEm's Mast-R-Lift II manual, for example, lists the Porter-Cable 7518 at 4.2 in and the Porter-Cable 690/890 and Bosch 1617/1618 at 3.5 in. More in Router motor diameters: 3.5 in, 4.2 in and the sizes in between

Is a 3.5 in lift right for a Porter-Cable 690?

JessEm lists the Porter-Cable 690/890 as a direct fit for its 3.5 in Rout-R-Lift 3.5XT and at the 3.5 in setting on its Mast-R-Lift II chart. For another lift, check that maker's list. More in Router motor diameters: 3.5 in, 4.2 in and the sizes in between

Does a Makita or Hitachi motor fit a 3.5 in lift?

JessEm says the Makita 1101 and Hitachi M12VC/KM12VC need an optional 3D-printable collar in its Rout-R-Lift 3.5XT. Its Mast-R-Lift II chart lists them at 3.218 in and 3.267 in with their own clamp settings. More in Router motor diameters: 3.5 in, 4.2 in and the sizes in between

Is the Milwaukee 5625 the same size as the 5626?

We cannot say. JessEm's chart lists the 5626 at 4.143 in, but no source in our register gives the 5625's diameter. More in Router motor diameters: 3.5 in, 4.2 in and the sizes in between

My router is not on the list: will it fit?

Treat it as not confirmed. Ask the lift maker before you buy, and do not infer fit from a similar model number or a diameter range. More in Will my router fit this lift?

Does a lift fit a plunge router?

A lift holds the motor, so it depends on whether your motor comes out of its base and whether the lift maker names that motor. Check the maker's list for your exact model. More in Will my router fit this lift?

Do I need a reducer collar?

Only if the lift maker says so for your motor. JessEm, for example, says the Makita 1101 and Hitachi M12VC/KM12VC need an optional collar in its Rout-R-Lift 3.5XT. More in Will my router fit this lift?

Does the metric version fit the same routers?

Not always. INCRA says the metric version of its Mast-R-Lift II is currently not compatible with Milwaukee routers, while its imperial list includes Milwaukee models. More in Will my router fit this lift?

Does the Kreg PRS5000 fit a DeWalt 625?

A Kreg Q&A answer says the DeWalt 625 will not work. Another confirms the Porter-Cable 7518. More in Will my router fit this lift?

JessEm's Mast-R-Lift II manual lists the 7518 at clamp setting A1 for a 4.2 in motor, and a Kreg Q&A answer confirms it for the PRS5000. The Rout-R-Lift 3.5XT is for 3.5 in motors only. More in Router lifts with a published plate size and motor list

Why is the INCRA Mast-R-Lift II not on the list?

It is not in our approved catalog yet. INCRA lists it with a 9-1/4 x 11-3/4 x 3/8 in plate and a 0.750 in corner radius, and notes it is not compatible with Rockler or Bench Dog tables. More in Router lifts with a published plate size and motor list

Are these lifts the most accurate?

We make no accuracy claim. Figures such as JessEm's 1/16 in per handle revolution are the maker's mechanism specs, not measured accuracy. More in Router lifts with a published plate size and motor list

My router is not in the list. What now?

Then no page here collects its maker lists yet. Find the model plate on your router and check it against each lift or plate maker's own list, or ask the maker. The measuring guide shows what to record. More in Router finder: lifts and plates whose makers list your router

Why does a field say 'Not confirmed'?

Because no maker page, manual or chart we read states it. We leave the field blank rather than fill it from a reseller listing or a guess based on size. More in Router finder: lifts and plates whose makers list your router

Why are the motor diameters per lift?

Because they come from each lift maker's chart. JessEm's Mast-R-Lift II manual, for example, lists the Porter-Cable 7518 at clamp setting A1 for a 4.2 in motor. Another maker may group the same router differently. More in Router finder: lifts and plates whose makers list your router
