Dust ports: 2-1/2 in hose, 2-1/4 in shop-vac hose and 35 mm adapters

Match the dust port's stated hose size to your hose. The sizes Woodpeckers, Kreg, Bosch and INCRA state, and why a hose that fits says nothing about dust capture.

Short answer

Match the port's stated hose size to your hose. Most makers in our sources state 2-1/2 in, Woodpeckers adds 2-1/4 in shop-vac hose, and Bosch says 35 mm hoses need its VAC004 adapter. A port that fits your hose is a connection, not a promise of how much dust it collects.

Woodpeckers SF-PRO Universal

Woodpeckers says the fence's dust port is sized for a 2-1/2 in dust collection hose or a 2-1/4 in shop vac hose.[1]

Kreg PRS1015

Kreg's spec table only lists a dust-collection port as included. A Kreg Q&A answer on the same page gives the port as 2-1/2 in.[2] We publish that figure as Kreg's Q&A answer.

Bosch RA1181 and RA1171

Bosch says common 2-1/2 in vacuum hoses attach directly to the RA1181, and 35 mm hoses need the VAC004 adapter.[3] The page does not show the VAC004 as included in the box.

Bosch's RA1171 cabinet table has dust ports at the fence and at the cabinet, and accepts common 2-1/2 in vacuum hoses directly.[4] Bosch says 35 mm hoses need the VAC004 adapter there too.[4]

INCRA Wonder Fence

INCRA describes the Wonder Fence's built-in dust port, with its attachment elbow, as fitting industry-standard hoses, without stating a hose diameter.[5] We do not assign it one. Measure the elbow or ask INCRA before buying a hose or fitting for it.

Hose sizes in plain terms

Hose and port sizes are nominal. A "2-1/2 in" hose end and a "2-1/2 in" port are meant to mate, but the exact outside and inside diameters vary by hose maker. Before you buy a hose or adapter:

  1. Read the port size from the fence or table maker, not from a hose listing.
  2. Measure your hose cuff's outside and inside diameter.
  3. Check whether the port expects the hose to slip over it or into it.
  4. If your vacuum uses a 35 mm hose and the maker names an adapter (as Bosch does with the VAC004), use that one.

Below the table

A fence port picks up from behind the bit. Some ring makers also shape the rings around the bit for dust. INCRA's CleanSweep rings have extra openings meant to increase downward airflow for dust collection.[6] INCRA publishes no performance figure for them, and we report none.

What a port does not tell you

OSHA states that sanders, shapers and routers generally produce the greatest amount of dust among woodworking machines, and that conventional means of exhausting them are not very effective.[7]

None of the makers above publishes a capture rate for its port, and we found no independent measurement of these models. So a fence or table that takes your hose has a place to connect it. That is all the hose size tells you. For what regulators say about wood dust, see our router table wood dust guide.

Woodpeckers SFPRO-U-25: Woodpeckers states a port for 2-1/2 in dust collection hose or 2-1/4 in shop vac hose; for tables with slots 16-3/4 to 33-1/4 in apart or JessEm and SawStop edge rails.

Questions

What size hose fits a router fence dust port?

The size the fence maker states. Woodpeckers says the SF-PRO Universal port takes a 2-1/2 in dust collection hose or a 2-1/4 in shop vac hose; a Kreg Q&A answer gives the PRS1015 port as 2-1/2 in.[1][2]

Will my shop vac hose fit?

Measure your hose end and compare it with the maker's stated port size. Woodpeckers names a 2-1/4 in shop vac hose for the SF-PRO; Bosch says 35 mm hoses need the VAC004 adapter on the RA1181 and RA1171.[1][3][4]

Does a fence dust port collect all the dust?

No source we found measures that for any of these ports. A hose that fits is a connection, not a capture figure. OSHA says routers are among the woodworking machines that produce the most dust.[7]

What hose fits the INCRA Wonder Fence?

INCRA says its dust port elbow fits industry-standard hoses but states no diameter. Ask INCRA or measure the elbow before buying a hose or fitting.[5]
