Short answers to the questions readers ask most. Each one links to the page that explains it in full, with sources.

Heating, power and control

What does thermal runaway mean?

It is a heater whose temperature is no longer under control. Marlin calls thermal protection one of its most vital safety features: it shuts the heaters down when a temperature fails to rise or drifts too far from target for too long. Never disable it to silence an error. More in Heating, power and control

Is my Bambu A1 recalled?

Check the serial number on the QR code sticker at the rear of the printer: recalled A1 units have the letter A as the sixth digit. CPSC told owners of recalled units to stop using them and not to attempt repairs themselves. The recall covers the A1, not the A1 mini. See the A1 recall guide. More in Heating, power and control

Is CE marking enough in the US?

No. OSHA says the European CE mark is unrelated to US product safety requirements for workplace equipment, and OSHA's rules cover workplaces. In Canada, Health Canada advises buying plug-in electrical products only with a Canadian certification mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL on the product. More in Heating, power and control

Do printer fumes need ventilation?

NIOSH identifies ultrafine particles and volatile organic compounds as 3D printing emissions, and recommends controls including ventilation and HEPA filtration at the source, with personal protective equipment last. NIOSH says emissions vary by printer and filament, so no single setup answers it for every room. More in Heating, power and control

Does my printer work on 120 V?

Read the maker's input rating and your unit's label. For example, ELEGOO lists the Neptune 4 Pro at 115/230 V, 50/60 Hz, and Sovol lists the SV06 Plus ACE power supply for 100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz. More in Printer power supplies: input ratings, voltage dials and replacements

Do I need to set a voltage switch?

It depends on the model. ELEGOO says the Neptune 3 Pro needs its voltage dial set by hand for 110 V supply, while the Neptune 3 Plus and Max need no manual setting. Follow your own printer's manual, and ask the maker if it is unclear. More in Printer power supplies: input ratings, voltage dials and replacements

Can I use an MK3 power supply on an MK4?

No. Prusa's own page lists its PSU 24V 240W assembly as compatible with the MK3/S/+ only, and not with the MK4, XL or CORE One, whatever a reseller listing says. More in Printer power supplies: input ratings, voltage dials and replacements

What power supply does the Prusa MK4S use?

Prusa specifies a 240 W unit made by Delta with Power Panic hardware for the MK4S. More in Printer power supplies: input ratings, voltage dials and replacements

Can I replace my printer's power supply myself?

A power supply works at mains voltage. Use the maker's own replacement part and its instructions, or the maker's service route or a qualified electrician; do not open or rewire a power supply. More in Printer power supplies: input ratings, voltage dials and replacements

Is a CE mark enough in the US?

No. OSHA says the European CE mark is unrelated to US product safety requirements for workplace equipment. In the US, look for the mark of a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory such as UL or Intertek's ETL. More in UL, ETL, CSA and CE marks, and printer fumes: what each one means

What does UL Recognized mean on a part?

UL says its Recognized Component Mark covers parts meant to be built into a larger certified product, not a complete standalone product, and is distinct from the UL Listed Mark. A recognized power supply does not make a modified printer Listed. More in UL, ETL, CSA and CE marks, and printer fumes: what each one means

Do 3D printers give off harmful fumes?

NIOSH identifies ultrafine particles and volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds as emissions from 3D printing, varying with printer and filament. It recommends ventilation and HEPA filtration at the source, with protective equipment as the last resort. More in UL, ETL, CSA and CE marks, and printer fumes: what each one means

Does my upgrade void FCC compliance?

FCC Part 15 requires manuals to warn that changes not expressly approved by the party responsible for compliance could void the user's authority to operate the equipment. That is a radio-frequency rule, not an electrical safety rule. More in UL, ETL, CSA and CE marks, and printer fumes: what each one means

What mark should a printer have in Canada?

Health Canada advises not to buy electrical products that plug into an outlet unless they carry a Canadian certification mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL, on the product itself. Ask the seller if a listing does not show it. More in UL, ETL, CSA and CE marks, and printer fumes: what each one means

Is my Bambu Lab A1 recalled?

Check the serial number on the QR code sticker at the rear of the printer. Recalled A1 printers have the letter A as the sixth digit. Health Canada scopes its recall to A1 units made and sold before January 30, 2024. More in Bambu Lab A1 heatbed cable recall: check the serial, then what

What should I do if my A1 is recalled?

Stop using it immediately. CPSC says owners can get a full refund or a free replacement heatbed and cable installed by a local electronics repair facility, and should not attempt repairs themselves. More in Bambu Lab A1 heatbed cable recall: check the serial, then what

Can I sell a recalled A1?

Not in Canada: Health Canada states that recalled products cannot be resold, redistributed or given away. In the US, follow the CPSC remedy rather than passing the printer on. More in Bambu Lab A1 heatbed cable recall: check the serial, then what

Does the recall cover the A1 mini?

The CPSC and Health Canada notices name the A1. They do not name the A1 mini or any other Bambu Lab model. More in Bambu Lab A1 heatbed cable recall: check the serial, then what

How do I report an unsafe printer in the US?

Through SaferProducts.gov. CPSC says reporters' names and contact information will not be released. More in Bambu Lab A1 heatbed cable recall: check the serial, then what

Do I need to PID tune after changing my hotend?

It is the safe assumption whenever the heater, block or hotend changes. Klipper warns that PID values copied from other firmware or example configs often work poorly, and a different heater changes how the hotend responds. More in PID tuning after a heater or hotend swap

How do I save a PID result in Marlin?

Marlin's M303 applies its result only when you use the U parameter. With EEPROM_SETTINGS enabled, M500 saves the values. M503 shows the values active in memory, which may not match what is saved. More in PID tuning after a heater or hotend swap

How do I PID tune in Klipper?

Klipper documents PID_CALIBRATE followed by SAVE_CONFIG, for example PID_CALIBRATE HEATER=extruder TARGET=170. More in PID tuning after a heater or hotend swap

Is PID tuning a safety setting?

It is not a substitute for thermal protection, which Marlin configures separately. But Marlin links them: poor tuning may show up as thermal runaway errors, and it calls overshoot a safety hazard. More in PID tuning after a heater or hotend swap

Does my printer have thermal runaway protection?

Klipper enables heater verification automatically for every configured heater, and Marlin documents thermal protection as one of its most vital safety features. Prusa's CORE One, MK4 and MK3.9 families show a hotend thermal runaway error. Ask your printer's maker to confirm it is enabled on your unit. More in Thermal runaway protection: what it does and how to confirm it

What does a MAXTEMP error mean?

Marlin's documentation says a MAXTEMP error usually means shorted sensor wires but can also indicate a heater MOSFET or relay stuck on. Stop printing, switch the printer off and contact the maker's support. More in Thermal runaway protection: what it does and how to confirm it

Can bad PID tuning trigger thermal runaway?

It can contribute. Marlin configures thermal protection and PID tuning separately, but its documentation says a thermal runaway error may indicate poor PID tuning, and that correct tuning prevents overshoot, which it calls a safety hazard. More in Thermal runaway protection: what it does and how to confirm it

Can I disable thermal runaway protection to stop the errors?

No. The error is the protection working. Find the cause with your printer maker's support instead of loosening or disabling the check. More in Thermal runaway protection: what it does and how to confirm it

Maintenance parts

How often should I change my nozzle or PTFE tube?

Follow your printer maker. ELEGOO recommends replacing the hotend PTFE tubing on frequently used Neptune 3 Pro, Plus and Max printers at least once a month, and says to judge nozzles by wear rather than by a fixed interval. Prusa says to replace a deformed or worn PTFE tube on the MINI and MINI+. More in Maintenance parts: nozzles, PTFE tubes, sheets and schedules

Do I need a hardened nozzle?

Only for abrasive filament, such as carbon-fiber or metal-filled materials. E3D marks its brass V6 nozzles as not abrasion resistant and its hardened steel ones as abrasion resistant. See nozzles for carbon fiber and abrasive filament. More in Maintenance parts: nozzles, PTFE tubes, sheets and schedules

Should I lubricate the Z lead screw?

Not on every printer. Prusa says not to lubricate the Z-axis trapezoid nuts or lead screws on the MK4/S and MK3.9/S, nor the Z nut or lead screw on the MINI and MINI+. Other printers follow their own maker's manual. More in Maintenance parts: nozzles, PTFE tubes, sheets and schedules

Is a filament dryer worth it?

We can only report what the makers state. SUNLU says its FilaDryer S4 heats up to 70 °C and holds up to four spools, and Polymaker says the highest internal temperature range of its PolyDryer is 68-73 °C and varies around the spool. Neither figure tells you how dry a given filament gets. More in Maintenance parts: nozzles, PTFE tubes, sheets and schedules

How often should I service my 3D printer?

Follow your maker. Prusa's MK4/S and MK3.9/S guide calls for sporadic checks every 200 printing hours and electrical connector checks every 600-800 hours. We found no comparable published schedule for most other brands. More in 3D printer maintenance and lubrication: what makers say

Should I grease the Z lead screw?

Not on a Prusa MK4/S, MK3.9/S, MINI or MINI+: Prusa says not to lubricate the Z-axis trapezoid nuts or lead screws on those printers. For other printers, follow the manual. More in 3D printer maintenance and lubrication: what makers say

What lubricant goes on a linear rail?

Use what the rail's or printer's maker names. Prusa says to lubricate the CORE One and CORE One+ X-axis rail every 3-6 months with its dedicated rail lubrication set, not with Prusa Lubricant. We could not read HIWIN's own lubrication instructions, so we publish no general rail interval. More in 3D printer maintenance and lubrication: what makers say

How often should I clean the smooth rods on a Prusa MINI?

Prusa says to clean the MINI and MINI+ smooth rods after about 200 hours of printing. More in 3D printer maintenance and lubrication: what makers say

Do I need a hardened nozzle for PLA?

No. E3D describes its brass V6 nozzles for standard non-abrasive printing such as PLA, PETG and ABS. A wear-resistant nozzle matters once you print filled filament such as carbon fiber. More in Brass, hardened steel, ruby and tungsten carbide nozzles

Does hardened steel need a higher printing temperature?

Not as a rule. In one 2020 CNC Kitchen flow test, an E3D hardened steel nozzle extruded noticeably less than brass only below 200 °C, and the author concluded a quality steel nozzle likely does not need a higher temperature unless you print very cold. That is one setup, not every nozzle. More in Brass, hardened steel, ruby and tungsten carbide nozzles

Which nozzles resist carbon fiber?

E3D marks its hardened steel, Nozzle X, ObXidian and Revo DiamondBack nozzles as abrasion resistant, and Micro Swiss makes its plated A2 MK8 nozzle for abrasive filaments such as carbon fiber. Check that the maker states it for the exact nozzle you buy. More in Brass, hardened steel, ruby and tungsten carbide nozzles

Is a high-temperature nozzle also abrasion resistant?

Not necessarily. E3D rates its Revo HT nozzles to 500 °C but marks them as not abrasion resistant, and its 500 °C stainless and plated copper V6 nozzles are also not abrasion resistant. More in Brass, hardened steel, ruby and tungsten carbide nozzles

Can a nozzle's temperature rating tell me how hot my printer can go?

No. E3D notes that the usable limit of the whole hotend is set by its heater, sensor, heat break and firmware, not by the nozzle alone. More in Brass, hardened steel, ruby and tungsten carbide nozzles

Is a Capricorn tube on AliExpress genuine?

Almost certainly not. Capricorn says it does not sell on AliExpress or Alibaba and neither do its authorized resellers, so tubing bought there is almost certainly not genuine. More in Buying 3D printer parts on Amazon or AliExpress

Will I pay duty on parts shipped to the US?

Expect to. CBP says goods from all countries lost the de minimis duty-free exemption from August 29, 2025, and its e-commerce FAQ says all applicable duties, taxes and fees must be paid on shipments of $800 or less, including by mail. We do not quote a rate. More in Buying 3D printer parts on Amazon or AliExpress

Can I return an AliExpress part?

Free Return applies only to items showing the Free Return label, and AliExpress's terms require the request within 15 calendar days of receipt, with the item unused and undamaged. Without the label, the seller's own terms apply. More in Buying 3D printer parts on Amazon or AliExpress

How do I know a seller is authorized?

Check the brand's own reseller or store page, not the listing title. ELEGOO tells buyers to use its official stores or listed resellers and names no Amazon or AliExpress store; Bondtech lists authorized US and Canadian resellers. If the brand's page does not name the seller, treat it as unconfirmed. More in Buying 3D printer parts on Amazon or AliExpress

Do I need a certification mark on a printer power part in Canada?

Health Canada advises not to buy plug-in electrical products without a Canadian certification mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL, and says the mark must be on the product itself, not only the packaging. More in Buying 3D printer parts on Amazon or AliExpress

Measurement tools

Do I need an accelerometer for input shaping?

Not always. Marlin tunes input shaping by printing test patterns and does not offer accelerometer-based tuning, and Prusa says its Accelerometer Set is not needed on stock printers because factory values are pre-tuned. Klipper can use one, and lists ADXL345, MPU-9250, LIS2DW and LIS3DH-compatible chips. More in Measurement and calibration tools

What order should I calibrate in?

Extruder first (E-steps or rotation distance), then pressure advance, then flow or extrusion multiplier per filament. Klipper says to tune rotation distance and nozzle temperature before pressure advance, and the ellis3dp.com guide tunes the extrusion multiplier after both. More in Measurement and calibration tools

Is a cheap caliper accurate enough?

You cannot tell from the display. Resolution (the last digit) and accuracy are separate figures: Mitutoyo lists its 150 mm ABSOLUTE Digimatic at 0.01 mm resolution and ±0.02 mm accuracy. If a caliper's maker publishes no accuracy figure, its accuracy is unknown. More in Measurement and calibration tools

Does input shaping make prints faster?

Not by itself. Klipper's documentation says input shaping does not change print time; only the max_accel setting does, and the acceleration its calibration suggests is a theoretical maximum, not a recommendation. More in Measurement and calibration tools

Does a bed probe fix a warped bed?

No. Klipper says a bed mesh cannot compensate for mechanical and electrical issues and can only approximate the shape of the bed. It makes the nozzle follow the surface; it does not make the bed flat. More in Bed probes and bed mesh: what they fix and what they cannot

How accurate must a bed probe be?

Klipper's probe guide says a PROBE_ACCURACY range above 25 microns (0.025 mm) means the probe lacks the accuracy for typical bed leveling. A spread of one Z step or up to 5 microns is normal. More in Bed probes and bed mesh: what they fix and what they cannot

Do I redo the Z offset after changing the hotend?

Yes. Klipper says changes to the motion system, hotend position or probe location invalidate the probe's Z offset, which should be redone before re-running the bed mesh. E3D also says you may need to adjust Z offset after a Revo nozzle change. More in Bed probes and bed mesh: what they fix and what they cannot

Can I make a bed mesh without a probe?

In Klipper, yes. It can build a mesh with a manual paper test at each point (METHOD=manual). More in Bed probes and bed mesh: what they fix and what they cannot

Is the paper test good enough?

As a starting point. The ellis3dp.com guide says a paper test is fine as a rough start for Z offset but gives only relative, not absolute, measurements. More in Bed probes and bed mesh: what they fix and what they cannot

Do I need a caliper that reads to 0.01 mm?

Reading to 0.01 mm is resolution, not accuracy. Mitutoyo lists its 150 mm ABSOLUTE Digimatic caliper with 0.01 mm resolution but ±0.02 mm accuracy. Look for a published accuracy figure, not just the display. More in Calipers, dial indicators and feeler gauges for printer work

Can I tune flow by measuring a single wall with calipers?

The ellis3dp.com guide argues against it: layer wobble and filament variation inflate the reading. It prefers judging a printed top surface in small steps. More in Calipers, dial indicators and feeler gauges for printer work

What is a dial indicator for on a 3D printer?

It reads small changes in height or position against a fixed reference as you move a part past it. Mitutoyo lists its 2046A with 0.01 mm graduations over 0-10 mm and ±0.013 mm accuracy. More in Calipers, dial indicators and feeler gauges for printer work

Why does my two-wall test print measure 0.76 mm instead of 0.8 mm?

The ellis3dp.com guide explains that in Slic3r-based slicers two 0.4 mm perimeters at 0.2 mm layer height come out to about 0.757 mm, because of how the slicer spaces them. More in Calipers, dial indicators and feeler gauges for printer work

What E-steps does a Bondtech BMG need?

Bondtech lists 415 E-steps for its BMG with a 1.8° motor at 16 microsteps, and says to double it for a 0.9° motor or for 32 microsteps. Treat that as a starting point and measure. More in E-steps and rotation distance after an extruder swap

Why is my measured value different from the maker's?

A published number is a nominal starting point. Klipper notes, for example, that the BMG is advertised as 3:1 but actually uses 50:17 gearing. Measuring what your own extruder feeds is how you find the real value. More in E-steps and rotation distance after an extruder swap

Where do I set rotation distance in Klipper?

In the extruder section of your Klipper configuration, as rotation_distance, with gear_ratio if the extruder is geared. Klipper's calibration extrudes 50 mm and scales rotation_distance by what actually went in. More in E-steps and rotation distance after an extruder swap

Is E-steps calibration the same as flow rate?

No. The ellis3dp.com guide treats extruder calibration as separate from extrusion multiplier, which is tuned per filament after extruder calibration and pressure advance. More in E-steps and rotation distance after an extruder swap

Why does M503 show a different value from what I saved?

Marlin's M503 reports the settings active in memory, which may not match what is saved in EEPROM. M500 saves them. More in E-steps and rotation distance after an extruder swap

How do I find my hotend's max flow?

Run your slicer's max volumetric speed test with the filament you will use. OrcaSlicer's version calls its result a best case, so reduce the number before you use it. More in Flow ratio and max volumetric speed: calibrate in the right order

Why derate the max volumetric speed result?

OrcaSlicer suggests reducing the measured value by 10-20% or more for print quality and strength, and notes that high volumetric speed can cause poor layer adhesion or clogs. In CNC Kitchen's 2020 MK3S test, under-extrusion of about 3% began at 9 mm³/s, well before audible skipping at 15. More in Flow ratio and max volumetric speed: calibrate in the right order

What order should I calibrate in?

Extruder calibration (E-steps or rotation distance) first, then pressure advance, then flow ratio per filament. The ellis3dp.com guide puts extrusion multiplier after both. More in Flow ratio and max volumetric speed: calibrate in the right order

Does a hotter nozzle mean more flow?

On one near-stock Ender-3 Pro with PLA, CNC Kitchen found usable flow of about 6 mm³/s at 200 °C, 8 at 220 °C and 12 at 240 °C. The author notes that hotter printing also brings more stringing, blobs and emissions. More in Flow ratio and max volumetric speed: calibrate in the right order

Do I need an accelerometer for input shaping?

Not always. Marlin tunes input shaping by printing test patterns and does not provide accelerometer-based tuning. Prusa pre-tunes its stock printers. Klipper can use one to measure resonances directly. More in Input shaping and accelerometers: Klipper, Marlin and Prusa

Will input shaping make my prints faster?

Not by itself. Klipper's documentation says input shaping does not change print time; only the max_accel setting does. Shaping lets you raise acceleration with less ringing, within the limits of smoothing. More in Input shaping and accelerometers: Klipper, Marlin and Prusa

Which ADXL345 board works with Klipper?

One that supports SPI. Klipper warns that some ADXL345 boards are hard-wired for I2C, which is too slow for its resonance measurement. With a 5 V printer MCU, Klipper says the board needs a voltage regulator and level shifters. More in Input shaping and accelerometers: Klipper, Marlin and Prusa

Can I use Prusa's Accelerometer Set on a MINI+?

No. Prusa's product page lists the MINI and MINI+ as not compatible with its official Accelerometer Set. The MINI/MINI+ did get input shaper in firmware 5.1.0. More in Input shaping and accelerometers: Klipper, Marlin and Prusa

Should I use the maximum acceleration Klipper suggests?

No. Klipper describes it as a theoretical maximum, not a recommendation, and advises keeping max_accel below it with a conservative margin and test prints. More in Input shaping and accelerometers: Klipper, Marlin and Prusa

Do I tune pressure advance per filament?

Klipper says the value depends on the extruder, the nozzle and the filament, and recommends calibrating it on each printer and with each spool. Filament from different makers or with different pigments can need very different values. More in Pressure advance and Linear Advance: what to tune and when

Why is my Marlin K value 50 when the guide says 0.05?

Marlin changed the K-factor unit in Linear Advance 1.5. Old values (around 30-130 for PLA) do not carry over to the new range of about 0.1-2.0, so you have to redo the calibration. More in Pressure advance and Linear Advance: what to tune and when

Should I tune pressure advance before or after input shaping?

Klipper's ringing test disables pressure advance and says to re-tune it after shaper tuning if needed. Marlin's M593 page similarly notes the K-factor may need recalibration after input-shaper tuning. More in Pressure advance and Linear Advance: what to tune and when

What is a typical pressure advance value?

Klipper gives 0.050 to 1.000 as typical, with the upper end usually needed only on Bowden extruders. It warns that values over about 0.200 can make the extruder skip. More in Pressure advance and Linear Advance: what to tune and when

Mechanical upgrades

Which upgrade should I do first?

Find the actual limit before buying anything. Klipper says ringing usually has mechanical origins, such as a weak frame or loose belts, and that these should be checked and fixed first where possible. Then upgrade the one part that limits you, and only with a kit whose maker names your model. More in Mechanical upgrades: extruders, hotends and motion

Will a part for the Ender-3 fit my Ender-3 V2 Neo?

Not necessarily. Micro Swiss sells a separate NG direct drive kit for the Ender 3 V2 Neo (M3208), apart from its kit for the CR-10 and Ender 3 family (M3201). Check the part maker's list for your exact model. More in Mechanical upgrades: extruders, hotends and motion

Does a high-flow hotend make my printer faster?

Only if melting is what limits you. In one CNC Kitchen setup with 0.6 mm nozzles, a Bondtech CHT reached about 40 mm³/s against about 15 for a standard V6, but Bondtech says meaningful CHT gains need a nozzle of at least 0.6 mm. Acceleration, cooling and the extruder still set their own limits. More in Mechanical upgrades: extruders, hotends and motion

Do I need direct drive?

Not by default, and many current printers already ship with a direct extruder. If yours is a Bowden machine, a direct drive kit is worth considering only when its maker names your model, as Micro Swiss does for the Ender 3, Ender 3 Pro and Ender 3 V2. See the extruder upgrade guide. More in Mechanical upgrades: extruders, hotends and motion

Does the Micro Swiss NG fit the Ender 3 V2 Neo?

Not the M3201. Micro Swiss sells a separate NG kit for the Ender 3 V2 Neo (M3208), and lists separate kits for the Ender 3 Neo and Ender 3 Max Neo too. More in Direct drive extruder kits compared: Micro Swiss NG vs NG REVO

Can I use my old nozzles with the NG REVO?

Not V6-style ones. E3D states that Revo nozzles are not compatible with V6-style heater blocks, and a Revo hotend takes only Revo nozzles. More in Direct drive extruder kits compared: Micro Swiss NG vs NG REVO

What about my Ender 3 with a linear rail?

Micro Swiss sells a linear-rail NG adaptation plate for CR-10 and Ender 3 printers fitted with an MGN12 rail and MGN12H carriage block. The rail is not included. More in Direct drive extruder kits compared: Micro Swiss NG vs NG REVO

Do I need an all-metal hotend to print PETG or ABS?

Look at the temperature you print at and what your liner maker says. Capricorn does not recommend printing above 260 °C with its TL tubing. If your printing stays below the limit your hotend's maker and liner maker state, a PTFE-lined hotend may be enough. More in All-metal vs PTFE-lined hotends: when the swap matters

Why does the length of a replacement throat matter?

The heat break sets where the nozzle sits. ELEGOO says a replacement all-metal throat for the Neptune 3 Pro, Plus and Max must match the original 27 mm length, and Slice notes its G2 heat break is 3 mm longer than the original, which may need a Z offset change. More in All-metal vs PTFE-lined hotends: when the swap matters

Is overheated PTFE dangerous?

VCA Animal Hospitals says overheated PTFE releases particles and acidic gases that are toxic to birds when inhaled. It gives no safe temperature. Keep birds out of the room where a printer with a PTFE liner runs. More in All-metal vs PTFE-lined hotends: when the swap matters

How often should I replace the PTFE liner?

It depends on the printer and how much you use it. For frequently used Neptune 3 Pro, Plus and Max printers, ELEGOO recommends replacing the hotend PTFE tubing at least once a month. More in All-metal vs PTFE-lined hotends: when the swap matters

How much flow does a CHT nozzle add on a Bambu printer?

In CNC Kitchen's 2023 X1/P1P test with Voxel PLA at 220 °C, the stock hotend looked good to about 23 mm³/s and a genuine Bondtech CHT to about 32. That is one setup, judged by eye. More in Bambu Lab P1 and X1 hotend upgrades: Panda Revo and CHT numbers

Is the stock hotend the limit on a P1 or X1?

In CNC Kitchen's test it was the lowest of the nozzles compared, at about 23 mm³/s. Whether that limits you depends on the speeds and materials you print. More in Bambu Lab P1 and X1 hotend upgrades: Panda Revo and CHT numbers

Do P1 and X1 hotends interchange?

We could not confirm it. Bambu Lab's hotend and spec pages could not be read when we checked, so we make no cross-fit claim between X1 and P1 hotends. More in Bambu Lab P1 and X1 hotend upgrades: Panda Revo and CHT numbers

In CNC Kitchen's 2023 load-cell comparison, the stock Ender-3 feeder pushed about 2.8 kg while the other extruders in that comparison ranged from about 4 to 10 kg. That is one setup, and force is not a measure of print quality. More in Extruder upgrades: gear ratio, dual gears and feeding force

Is a clone BMG the same as a Bondtech BMG?

Not necessarily. Bondtech says its BMG drive gear is heat-treated and nickel-coated, and reports that one clone it examined had unhardened gears. That is a single unit examined by an interested party, so it does not describe every clone. More in Extruder upgrades: gear ratio, dual gears and feeding force

Do I need to change firmware after an extruder swap?

Usually you change the E-steps or rotation distance, because the gearing changes. Bondtech publishes 415 E-steps for the BMG at 16 microsteps; Micro Swiss offers a G-code download for the NG instead of a number. See E-steps and rotation distance. More in Extruder upgrades: gear ratio, dual gears and feeding force
