Short answers to the questions readers ask most. Each one links to the page that explains it in full, with sources.

Drip emitters

What GPH emitter should I use?

It depends on the plant and how many emitters it gets. For containers, DIG suggests one or two 0.5 GPH drippers per pot as a starting point; check the soil and adjust. See emitter flow and inlets. More in Drip emitters: flow, pressure range and inlet

Do I need pressure-compensating emitters?

They help on long runs and slopes, but only inside their range. A 2019 study's abstract says PC emitters give constant flow above the lower limit of their range and orifice-type flow below it. DIG's PC buttons compensate from 7.25 to 58 psi. More in Drip emitters: flow, pressure range and inlet

Can I bury drip emitters?

DIG recommends keeping drippers above ground or under mulch to prevent clogging, rather than burying them. More in Drip emitters: flow, pressure range and inlet

Why did my emitters stop dripping?

Check the filter and the pressure first, then look for clogged or buried emitters and long 1/4 in runs. The troubleshooting guide lists the checks. More in Drip emitters: flow, pressure range and inlet

What GPH drip emitter should I use?

Start from the plant and soil, then check the pressure range. DIG suggests one or two 0.5 GPH drippers per pot, and Utah State University Extension suggests two emitters per perennial in sandy soil. More in 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 GPH: drip emitter flow, color codes and inlets

What do the colors on drip emitters mean?

Each maker uses its own code. Raindrip uses red for 0.5 GPH, black for 1, green for 2 and yellow for 4, but DIG's 0.5 GPH button is brown and its 0.5 GPH inline emitter is red, so read the maker's page for the model. More in 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 GPH: drip emitter flow, color codes and inlets

Is a 2 GPH emitter the same as two 1 GPH emitters?

The total flow is the same by arithmetic, but two emitters wet two spots. Utah State University Extension suggests two emitters per perennial in sandy soil, where water moves straight down. More in 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 GPH: drip emitter flow, color codes and inlets

What is a 10-32 thread emitter?

An emitter with a small threaded inlet that screws into a 10-32 riser or adapter instead of pushing onto a barb. Rain Bird sells its Xeri-Bug in barb, 10-32 and 1/2 in FPT inlet versions. More in 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 GPH: drip emitter flow, color codes and inlets

Does a 1 GPH emitter always put out 1 gallon per hour?

Only at the pressure the maker rates it at, unless it is pressure-compensating and your pressure is inside its range. DIG says the flow of its inline emitters depends on the inlet pressure. More in 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 GPH: drip emitter flow, color codes and inlets

How many drip emitters does a tree need?

No source gives a fixed number. Utah State University Extension says to spread emitters evenly within the drip line and to design for the mature tree in the hottest part of the year. More in Drip emitters for trees and shrubs: placement, flow and bubblers

Where do I put drip emitters around a tree?

Above ground, spread evenly within the tree's drip line, per Utah State University Extension. DIG also recommends keeping drippers above ground or under mulch. More in Drip emitters for trees and shrubs: placement, flow and bubblers

Bubbler or dripper for a tree?

A bubbler puts out much more water at one point; Rain Bird's 1300A-F is rated 1.0 to 2.3 GPM. Keep bubblers on their own line, since Raindrip says never to mix drippers and sprinklers on one line. More in Drip emitters for trees and shrubs: placement, flow and bubblers

Can I use drip irrigation on a lawn?

DIG suggests conventional pop-up sprinklers for lawns, not micro sprinklers or drippers. More in Drip emitters for trees and shrubs: placement, flow and bubblers

How long should I run drip on a tree?

DIG says it depends on location, plants, soil and weather, and advises checking the soil and plants and adjusting. We give no schedule. More in Drip emitters for trees and shrubs: placement, flow and bubblers

Why is my drip emitter not dripping?

If all emitters are weak, clean the filter and check the pressure; DIG says most drip systems work best at 20 to 50 psi. If one is dry, it is probably clogged or buried. More in Drip emitters not dripping or uneven: what to check

Why do the emitters at the end of my line drip less?

Pressure drops along the tubing, more so in 1/4 in tubing than in 1/2 in, as a Utah State University Extension presentation illustrates. Shorten long 1/4 in branches or feed them closer to the plants. More in Drip emitters not dripping or uneven: what to check

How do I unclog a drip emitter?

Flush with water: rinse the filter under running water and open the mainline ends during a manual run, as DIG describes. We do not cover chemical cleaners; replace an emitter that stays blocked. More in Drip emitters not dripping or uneven: what to check

Do self-flushing emitters still need a filter?

Yes. Rain Bird calls its PC on-line emitters self-flushing and still recommends 200 mesh filtration. More in Drip emitters not dripping or uneven: what to check

How do I set up drip irrigation for pots?

Run 1/4 in tubing from a supply line to each pot, end each branch at a dripper on the soil surface, and group pots by sun or shade, as DIG suggests. More in Drip for pots and hanging baskets: emitters, 1/4 in tubing and stakes

How many drippers per pot?

DIG suggests one or two 0.5 GPH drippers per pot as a starting point. Check the soil and plants and adjust the watering time. More in Drip for pots and hanging baskets: emitters, 1/4 in tubing and stakes

Can I use drip irrigation on a balcony or indoors?

Mister Landscaper says its system is not for indoor use and its regulators should not be used anywhere a leak might damage something. On a balcony, check the system often and never leave it unwatched. More in Drip for pots and hanging baskets: emitters, 1/4 in tubing and stakes

Can I put drippers and micro-sprays on the same line?

Raindrip says never mix drippers and sprinklers on the same line, because their flow rates differ. Run sprays on their own line. More in Drip for pots and hanging baskets: emitters, 1/4 in tubing and stakes

Should I bury the drippers in the pot?

No. DIG recommends keeping drippers above ground or under mulch to prevent clogging. More in Drip for pots and hanging baskets: emitters, 1/4 in tubing and stakes

Are pressure-compensating emitters worth it?

They hold their rated flow only inside their stated range. A 2004 study found both compensating types within plus or minus 10% of rated flow but only one of seven non-compensating types; it was a regional sample, not a ranking of today's products. More in Pressure-compensating vs non-PC drip emitters: what the ratings and studies say

Do PC emitters work at low pressure?

Only down to the bottom of their range. A 2019 study's abstract describes PC emitters as giving orifice-type flow below the lower limit of their compensating range. More in Pressure-compensating vs non-PC drip emitters: what the ratings and studies say

Do I need PC emitters on a slope?

No source we found gives a slope rule. A PC emitter holds its flow only while the pressure at that emitter stays inside the range its maker lists, such as 7.25 to 58 PSI for DIG's PC buttons. More in Pressure-compensating vs non-PC drip emitters: what the ratings and studies say

Why is my drip watering uneven?

Utah State University Extension lists eight common causes: pressure variation, manufacturing variation, spacing, disrepair, clogging, weather, irrigation duration and soil infiltration. Check filters and pressure first. More in Pressure-compensating vs non-PC drip emitters: what the ratings and studies say

Is an adjustable dripper pressure-compensating?

Not by default. DIG's adjustable mini-bubbler turns from full flow to shut-off, and DIG does not call it pressure-compensating. More in Pressure-compensating vs non-PC drip emitters: what the ratings and studies say

What does the 7.25 to 58 psi range mean?

It is the pressure range over which DIG says these emitters compensate. A 2019 study's abstract describes PC emitters as giving constant flow above the lower limit of their range and orifice-type flow below it. More in Drip emitters with a stated flow and pressure range

Are DIG's standard button emitters the same?

No. DIG's standard buttons come in .5, 1 and 2 GPH and are rated for 15 to 25 psi, with flow that rises with pressure. More in Drip emitters with a stated flow and pressure range

Can I bury these emitters?

DIG recommends keeping drippers above ground or under mulch to prevent clogging, rather than burying them. More in Drip emitters with a stated flow and pressure range

Drip line

What is drip line?

Tubing with emitters built in at a fixed spacing, laid along a row or through a bed. Rain Bird XFD, for example, comes with 0.6 or 0.9 GPH emitters at 12 or 18 in spacing. More in Drip line: flow, spacing, pressure and run length

How long can a drip line run?

As long as its maker's table allows at your pressure, which is much shorter than the coil. Rain Bird allows 273 ft of 0.6 GPH, 12 in XFD at 15 psi and 460 ft at 60 psi; DIG limits a single 6 in Microline run to about 16 ft at 25 psi. More in Drip line: flow, spacing, pressure and run length

What fittings go with Rain Bird XFD?

Rain Bird specifies its XF dripline insert fittings or its Easy-Fit compression fittings for XFD. More in Drip line: flow, spacing, pressure and run length

Does drip line drain after the water shuts off?

Some does, some does not. Netafim says Techline CV has a check valve that keeps water in the line after shut-down. Rain Bird's XFD page mentions no check valve; Rain Bird offers that in a separate model, XFCV. More in Drip line: flow, spacing, pressure and run length

How long can a drip line run?

As long as its maker's table allows for your spacing, flow and inlet pressure. Rain Bird's XFD table gives 273 ft at 15 psi and 460 ft at 60 psi for 0.6 GPH at 12 inch spacing. More in Drip line spacing and maximum run length: read the maker's table

How long can 1/4 inch drip line be?

For DIG Microline, about 16 ft at 6 inch spacing, 22 ft at 9 inch and 28 ft at 12 inch, at 25 psi on level ground. Other 1/4 in lines need their own maker's figure. More in Drip line spacing and maximum run length: read the maker's table

Does emitter spacing change run length?

Yes. Closer spacing puts more emitters on each foot, so DIG's Microline limit drops from 28 ft at 12 inch spacing to 16 ft at 6 inch. More in Drip line spacing and maximum run length: read the maker's table

Can I use a whole 100 ft roll of 1/4 in drip line as one run?

Not per DIG's table for Microline, which tops out at about 28 ft per run at 25 psi. Cut the coil into several runs fed from a 1/2 in supply line. More in Drip line spacing and maximum run length: read the maker's table

Is drip line or emitters better for a raised bed?

Drip line suits a densely planted bed because the emitters are already spaced along it; DIG's ML50 raised-bed kit, for example, has emitters every 9 inches. Loose emitters suit plants spaced far apart. More in Drip line, loose emitters or micro-sprays for a bed or row

Can I mix drip line and micro-sprays?

In one garden, yes, but not on one line. Colorado State University Extension advises a separate zone for micro-sprays, and Raindrip says never to mix drippers and sprinklers on the same line. More in Drip line, loose emitters or micro-sprays for a bed or row

What spacing drip line for a vegetable garden?

Makers offer 6 to 24 inch spacing, and no source sets a spacing by plant. CSU gives soil-based guidance of about 12 inches in sand, 18 in loam and 24 in clay. More in Drip line, loose emitters or micro-sprays for a bed or row

When should I water a vegetable garden on drip?

Colorado State University Extension advises irrigating when the top two to four inches of soil feel dry. More in Drip line, loose emitters or micro-sprays for a bed or row

Is a soaker hose the same as drip line?

No. A soaker hose seeps through its porous wall along its length; drip line has emitters at a fixed spacing. Raindrip lists its soaker hose as a separate product from its dripline. More in Soaker hose vs drip line: porous tubing vs fixed emitters

How long can a soaker hose be?

For Raindrip's soaker tubing, under 15 feet; its FAQ warns that longer runs water unevenly. Other makers' soaker hoses need their own figure. More in Soaker hose vs drip line: porous tubing vs fixed emitters

Can I connect soaker tubing to a drip system?

Raindrip says its 1/4 in soaker tubing connects with a 1/4 in micro fitting or a Clamp N Pierce connector. Give it its own branch. More in Soaker hose vs drip line: porous tubing vs fixed emitters

Is soaker tubing pressure-compensating?

Raindrip says its 015005T is not, and that its flow varies with length and elevation, higher near the source. More in Soaker hose vs drip line: porous tubing vs fixed emitters

Why is a 100 ft coil of Microline not one 100 ft run?

Because DIG limits a single Microline run at 25 psi on level ground to about 16 ft at 6 in spacing, 22 ft at 9 in and 28 ft at 12 in. Cut the coil into several runs. More in Drip line with published flow, spacing and run tables

Does XFD hold water in the line after shut-off?

Rain Bird's XFD page does not mention a check valve; Rain Bird offers that feature in a separate model, XFCV. More in Drip line with published flow, spacing and run tables

Why is Netafim Techline CV not on the list?

Netafim publishes its flow, spacing and range, but no Techline CV listing is in our approved catalog yet. We do not add products we have not approved. More in Drip line with published flow, spacing and run tables

Faucet head assembly

What goes on the faucet for drip irrigation?

Usually a backflow device, a filter, a pressure regulator and an adapter to your tubing. The order depends on your kit maker; see the faucet head assembly guide. More in Drip faucet head assembly

Does the filter go before or after the regulator?

DIG suggests conventional pop-up sprinklers for lawns, not micro sprinklers or drippers. More in Convert a sprinkler zone to drip: retrofit kits by spray body and riser

What order does a drip faucet assembly go in?

Your kit maker's order. Mister Landscaper lists backflow device, timer, regulator, 150 mesh filter, then poly fitting for its system; we found no source that sets one order for every brand. More in Drip faucet head assembly: the parts, the threads and the maker's order

Does the pressure regulator go before or after the filter?

It depends on the maker. Mister Landscaper puts the regulator before the filter, and DIG's D54 combines both in one body. More in Drip faucet head assembly: the parts, the threads and the maker's order

Why does water drip from my backflow preventer?

Mister Landscaper says its backflow prevention valve has relief holes and that some water draining from them is normal. For other devices, check the maker's instructions. More in Drip faucet head assembly: the parts, the threads and the maker's order

Can I leave the regulator on the faucet all the time?

Not every regulator. DIG says its D54 must not be under constant static pressure, and Rain Bird recommends taking head parts indoors for winter. More in Drip faucet head assembly: the parts, the threads and the maker's order

Who decides what backflow device I need?

Your water utility or local plumbing authority. The EPA says programs vary by state and municipality. More in Drip faucet head assembly: the parts, the threads and the maker's order

What mesh filter do I need for drip irrigation?

The mesh your emitters' maker asks for. Utah State University Extension says most drip systems need 120 to 200 mesh, and Clemson says at least 150. More in Drip filter mesh: 150 vs 200 and what your emitters ask for

Is 200 mesh better than 150?

It is finer: about 0.074 mm openings against about 0.100 mm. Match what the emitter maker asks for; Rain Bird asks for 200 mesh on its PC on-line emitters and 120 on XFD. More in Drip filter mesh: 150 vs 200 and what your emitters ask for

How often should I clean my drip filter?

Utah State University Extension recommends inspecting and cleaning filters monthly in the growing season, more often with sediment-heavy water. DIG says to clean it under running water. More in Drip filter mesh: 150 vs 200 and what your emitters ask for

Do I need a filter on city water?

Yes. Colorado State University Extension's 150 to 200 mesh guidance is for relatively clean municipal water; well or pond water needs more. More in Drip filter mesh: 150 vs 200 and what your emitters ask for

Can a black-insert DIG fitting take .710 tubing?

DIG lists its blue insert for .710 in OD tubing and its black insert for .700 in OD, so use blue (C43, C45, C46) for .710 in tubing. More in Green, black or blue? DIG compression inserts by tubing OD

What pressure are DIG compression fittings rated for?

DIG rates them for up to 60 PSI and recommends operating them at 15 to 35 PSI. More in Green, black or blue? DIG compression inserts by tubing OD

How do I close the end of drip tubing?

Use a closure made for its size: an end cap whose maker lists your OD, such as Orbit's 67468 for .620-.710 in OD, or a figure-8 closure. For 1/4 in tubing, a goof plug or a 1/4 in tubing plug. More in Drip tubing end caps, figure-8 closures and flush points

What is a figure-8 end closure?

A figure-8 shaped piece that holds the folded-back end of the tubing shut. Rain Bird's winter guide removes figure-8 end caps to drain a line and puts them back loosely, because they only protect the line. More in Drip tubing end caps, figure-8 closures and flush points

How do I flush a drip line?

DIG says to open the ends of the mainlines and flush them during a manual run. Close them again once the water runs clear. More in Drip tubing end caps, figure-8 closures and flush points

How do I close the end of 1/4 inch tubing?

DIG says its goof plug can stop flow from the end of 1/4 in tubing, and Rain Bird sells a 1/4 in tubing plug that serves as an end plug for flushing and draining. More in Drip tubing end caps, figure-8 closures and flush points

How do I connect two different sizes of drip tubing?

Identify both ODs first. Then use a reducing coupling made for that exact pair, such as DIG's D50G (.700 to .620 in OD) or D50B (.700 to .710 in OD), or a coupling whose maker lists both sizes. More in Join .700 drip tubing to .620 or .710 tubing
