Short answer

Make a hole in the 1/2 in line with the punch made for your connector, push in a 1/4 in barbed connector, then run the 1/4 in tubing to the emitter. Rain Bird's SPB-025 self-piercing barb skips the separate punch: it goes in with Rain Bird's XM-Tool.

Option 1: a punched takeoff

A takeoff is the connector that taps the 1/2 in line. The hole has to suit the barb.

  • University of Maine Extension says to always use a punch made for drip tubing and matched to the barb, never a nail or other improvised tool. It says a barb needs an exact-size hole to seal, and a dull punch tears the tube.[1]
  • DIG lists separate 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm punch assemblies,[2] so one punch size does not cover every takeoff or emitter barb.[2]

We found no maker document that maps a punch size to a specific barb. Use the punch your connector's maker names, or ask the maker which size it expects.

Steps, in plain terms:

  1. Punch straight into the top or side of the 1/2 in line with the matched punch.
  2. Push the connector's barb fully into the hole.
  3. Push the 1/4 in tubing onto the connector's outlet barb.
  4. Run water briefly and check the joint before you add the emitter.

Option 2: Rain Bird's self-piercing barb

Rain Bird's SPB-025 self-piercing barb connector joins 1/4 in tubing to 1/2 in or 3/4 in distribution tubing, and is inserted with Rain Bird's Xeriman XM-Tool.[3] Rain Bird's page for it does not mention a separate punch.

Rain Bird's 1/4 in barbed fittings page is a different product page. It lists couplings, elbows, tees, a tubing plug, a stake and clips, but no punched takeoff connector and no punch size,[4] so it is not a source for which punch to use.

Along the 1/4 in run

Once the 1/4 in tubing leaves the line, the fittings on it are barbed:

  • Rain Bird's 1/4 in barbed couplings, elbows and tees push together, can go above or below ground, and are rated 0 to 50 psi.[4]
  • Rain Bird's XQ 1/4 in tubing is polyethylene, 0.17 in ID by 0.25 in OD, rated 0 to 60 psi.[5]
  • Rain Bird lists its TS-025 stake for 1/4 in tubing with a 0.16-0.18 in ID.[6] DIG sells 5 in galvanized wire stakes for 1/4 in tubing and 8 in wire stakes for 1/2 in tubing.[7]

These are for the 1/4 in run, not the takeoff. XQ100 is 100 ft of Rain Bird XQ tubing (0.17 x 0.25 in); Raindrip 016010T is 100 ft of 0.170 x 0.250 in polyethylene tubing; T22-50S is 50 ft of Rain Bird blank tubing (0.165 x 0.245 in); DIG B38PB is 50 ft of brown .170 x .250 in poly tubing; Raindrip 307050B is a 50-pack of barbed tees for 0.170 in ID tubing, up to 50 psi; BC25/10PS and BC25-30PS are bags of 10 and 30 barbed couplings, and BT25/10PS and BT25-30PS bags of 10 and 30 barbed tees; Orbit 67402 is a 25-pack of 1/4 in barbed couplings.

Mistakes and limits

  • A hole in the wrong place. Plug it. DIG's G79B goof plug has a .200 in OD small end and a .400 in OD large end for closing holes in drip and micro tubing.[9] See our punches and goof plugs guide.
  • Burying 1/4 in tubing. Raindrip says its supply tubing and feeder lines can be buried, but its drip tubing should not be, because buried emitters risk clogging.[10] That rule is Raindrip's for its own parts; check your tubing maker's instructions.
  • No heat. Do not soften tubing with hot water or a flame to get it onto a barb. If it will not go on, the barb and tubing are probably not a matched pair; check both sizes.

Questions

How do you connect 1/4 tubing to 1/2 tubing?

Make a hole in the 1/2 in line with a punch made for drip tubing and matched to your connector's barb, push in the 1/4 in barbed connector, then push the 1/4 in tubing onto its outlet. Rain Bird's SPB-025 self-piercing barb goes in with its XM-Tool instead of a separate punch.[1][3]

What size hole punch do I need for drip irrigation?

The one your connector's maker pairs with it. DIG sells 2, 3 and 4 mm punches, so one size does not cover every barb, and we found no maker chart that maps punch sizes to barbs.[2]

Can I use a nail to punch drip tubing?

No. University of Maine Extension says to always use a punch made for drip tubing and matched to the barb, never a nail or other improvised tool.[1]

Can I bury 1/4 inch tubing?

Raindrip says its supply tubing and feeder lines can be buried but its drip tubing should not be, because buried emitters risk clogging. That rule is for Raindrip parts; check your own tubing maker.[10]

What if I punch a hole in the wrong place?

Plug it. DIG's G79B goof plug has a .200 in and a .400 in end for closing holes in drip and micro tubing.[9]
