Short answer

Identify a deck gauge wheel by its part number first, then by diameter, bore and hub. Cub Cadet's deck gauge wheel 734-04155 is a 5-inch wheel listed for 42, 46, 50 and 54-inch decks.[1] An aftermarket wheel of the same diameter is not proof of fit: check its bore, hub and the maker's lookup too.

Step 1: the part number

Your model's parts list or maintenance sheet names the wheel. Two examples:

  • Cub Cadet's 734-04155 is listed as a "5-inch Diameter Deck Wheel" that fits 42, 46, 50 and 54-inch decks.[1] Cub Cadet's page does not state width, bore or included hardware.
  • John Deere's maintenance sheet for the D100 with a 42-inch deck lists gage wheel GX10168.[2] The sheet gives no measurements; confirm your serial number and any newer number with a Deere dealer.

See the Cub Cadet XT1 and XT2 Enduro page and the John Deere D100 42-inch page for the other parts listed for those machines. If the old wheel has no readable number, find your model and serial number first; the model and serial number guide shows where.

Step 2: the measurements

MeasurementWhat it isWhy it matters
DiameterAcross the tireSets how the wheel meets the ground at a given deck height
WidthAcross the treadAffects whether it fits the bracket
BoreThe hole or bearing inner diameterMust match the axle bolt
HubThe center section, its length and whether it is offsetMust match the bracket and spacer stack

Oregon 72-025: what the listing says

Oregon's 72-025 deck wheel is listed as 5 x 2-5/8 inches with a 1/2-inch bearing inner diameter.[3] The page does not say which of the two figures is the diameter, so read "5 x 2-5/8" as Oregon's size label. It has an offset plastic hub with a 2-7/16-inch hub length.[3] That figure is the hub's length, not an offset distance.

Oregon's 72-025 is titled "WHEEL, Deck 734-04155" and is described as designed for use on Cub Cadet products.[3] Oregon's title names 734-04155, but Oregon does not label it a cross-reference, lists no mower models and does not say whether mounting hardware is included. Oregon's page points buyers to its Parts Lookup Tool;[3] check your model there before you treat 72-025 as a replacement for 734-04155.

Cub Cadet decks: choose Oregon 72-025 only after Oregon's Parts Lookup lists it for your model.

More on choosing

John Deere D100 42-inch: choose GX10168, the gage wheel on Deere's sheet (the listing is a pack of two). Oregon 72-119: choose it only if Oregon's lookup lists it for your Deere deck; this site has no verified fit record for it.

John Deere decks with GX10168: choose the Stens 210-051, which Stens lists as 5 x 2 in with a 5/8-inch bore and no bolt.

More on choosing

Old-style Exmark decks: choose the Stens 210-169 kit (5 x 2-3/4 in, 5/8-inch bore) if your old wheel is one of the Exmark numbers Stens lists. Measure your old wheel's bore before you order. On Amazon, check that Ships from / Sold by is Amazon.com or Stens.

On Amazon, check that "Ships from / Sold by" shows Amazon.com or the brand.

Step 3: the axle stack

A wheel or roller mounts on a stack of hardware, and the manual lists each piece. Toro's Z Master Professional 7500-D manual, for its anti-scalp rollers, gives the stack as bolt, bushing, roller, spacer and flange nut on side-discharge decks, and bolt, bushing, roller and flange nut on rear-discharge decks.[4] That is a roller, not a deck wheel, but it shows why you rebuild a stack from the parts list, not from a hardware-store bolt of similar size. Reuse spacers and bushings only if they are sound and are the parts your list shows.

We could not read Toro's own deck wheel instruction PDFs, so this page gives no Toro deck wheel numbers.

Deck wheels and anti-scalp rollers are different parts

A gauge wheel is a wheel on the deck with its own part number. An anti-scalp roller is a separate part with its own manual section. See anti-scalp rollers on mower decks.

Questions

How do I find the right deck wheel for my mower?

Start with the part number from your model's parts list or maintenance sheet. Then check the diameter, bore and hub against the old wheel and the listing.

What size are mower deck wheels?

It depends on the part. Cub Cadet's deck gauge wheel 734-04155 is a 5-inch wheel listed for 42, 46, 50 and 54-inch decks.[1]

Is Oregon 72-025 the same as Cub Cadet 734-04155?

Oregon's title names 734-04155, but Oregon does not label it a cross-reference and lists no mower models. Check your model in Oregon's Parts Lookup before treating them as the same.[3]

Does a replacement wheel include the axle bolt?

Only if the listing says so. Oregon's 72-025 page does not say whether mounting hardware is included, and Cub Cadet's 734-04155 page does not state included hardware either.[3][1]
