Short answer
Anti-scalp rollers are not deck supports. Exmark's Staris E-Series manual says not to adjust the rollers to support the deck,[1] to keep 3/4 inch (19 mm) of clearance to the ground in the standard position, and to reposition them when the cutting height changes.[1] Those settings are for that mower. Your own mower's manual sets yours.

What the Exmark Staris E-Series manual says
Exmark's operator's manual for the Staris E-Series (32, 36 and 44-inch decks) gives three roller instructions:[1]
- Do not adjust the rollers to support the deck.
- In the standard position, keep 3/4 inch (19 mm) of clearance to the ground.
- Reposition the rollers when you change the cutting height.
These apply to the Staris E-Series only. See the Exmark Staris E-Series page. The manual also gives a tightening value for the roller nuts; we do not publish torque values, so use the figure in your own manual.
A note on sources: some guides describe this manual as Toro's roller instructions. It is Exmark's Staris E-Series manual, and it describes anti-scalp rollers only; it does not cover deck wheels.[1] We attribute every roller setting here to Exmark and that series, not to Toro or to deck wheels.
How a roller mounts: Toro's Z Master 7500-D
Toro's Z Master Professional 7500-D manual lists the anti-scalp roller mounting stack by deck type:[2]
| Deck | Stack, in order |
|---|---|
| Side discharge | Bolt, bushing, roller, spacer, flange nut |
| Rear discharge | Bolt, bushing, roller, flange nut |
The two decks use different stacks: the side-discharge version has a spacer the rear-discharge one does not. That is why you rebuild a roller from your manual's list, part by part. A missing spacer or a bushing left out changes how the roller sits. The 7500-D is a commercial zero-turn; your mower's manual has its own list.
Replacement kits: verify model and serial
Toro's 108-4140 is a Z-Master trim-side anti-scalp deck wheel kit.[3] Toro's page tells buyers to verify model and serial number before ordering.[3] It does not state the kit's contents, wheel size or model list, and it is a Z-Master (commercial) kit, not a general Toro part. Use your model and serial number on Toro's parts lookup, or ask a Toro dealer, before you order it or any roller kit. The model and serial guide shows where to find both.
Rollers vs deck wheels
A deck gauge wheel is a separate part with its own part number and its own manual section. Do not order one in place of the other. The deck wheel guide covers wheels by diameter, bore and hub.
While you are reading the manual
The same Exmark manual states that the Staris E-Series produces sound levels above 85 dBA at the operator's ear.[1] Check your own mower's manual for its hearing-protection advice.

Questions
What do anti-scalp rollers do?
They sit at the deck's edges, near the ground, but they are not deck supports. Exmark's Staris E-Series manual says not to adjust the rollers to support the deck.[1]
Should anti-scalp rollers touch the ground?
Not in normal use on the Exmark Staris E-Series: its manual sets 3/4 inch (19 mm) of clearance to the ground in the standard position and recommends repositioning when the cutting height changes. For any other mower, use its own manual.[1]
Which anti-scalp kit fits my Toro?
Verify your model and serial number with Toro first. Toro's 108-4140 is a Z-Master trim-side anti-scalp kit, and Toro's page tells buyers to verify model and serial before ordering; it does not state contents.[3]
Are deck wheels and anti-scalp rollers the same part?
No. They are separate parts with separate manual sections. The Exmark manual cited here covers anti-scalp rollers only and does not mention deck wheels.[1]
