Short answer
Choose safeties whose maker lists your rack and its inside depth, that lock the way the manual shows, and whose rating you can quote in the maker's own words. Safeties catch a bar at the height you set them, and nothing more. Inside a four-post rack that usually means straps, pin-pipe or flip-downs; on a squat stand it means spotter arms.

What safeties do
A safety is a bar stop. You set it just below the lowest point of the lift, and if the bar comes down further it lands on the safety. That is the whole job, and it only works at the height you set and on a rack the safety maker lists.
There are four common kinds. Straps hang between the front and back uprights. Pin-pipe safeties are a pin inside a pipe that passes through both uprights. Flip-down safeties are steel arms that swing into place. Spotter arms stick out from a single upright, so they suit a squat stand or the outside of a rack. The safety types guide compares them.
The decisions, in order
1. Inside the rack or outside. Straps, pin-pipe and flip-downs span the inside of a four-post rack, so their length must match its inside depth. Spotter arms need only one upright. Rogue's Monster spotter arms reach 24 in from the upright with a 19 in flat section.[1]
2. The maker lists your rack and depth. Rogue says its Monster Safety Strap 2.0 system fits only Monster Series racks, with 0.3125 in brackets and a 1 in pin,[2] and its Monster Lite version fits only Monster Lite racks with a 0.625 in pin.[3] Titan sells its pin and pipe set in 24 and 36 in versions for T-3 and X-3 bolt-down racks and a 30 in version for X-3 flat-foot racks.[4] Synergee sells straps in 23, 29 and 35 in inside-depth options, the 2x2 version in 23 in only,[5] and tells you to measure your inside depth first.[5] The strap depth guide covers the measurement.
3. The lock. REP locks its flip-down safeties with a clevis quick-release pin.[6] Titan's T-3 strap spotter arms take two hitch pins per arm and fit racks with 2x3 in uprights and 11/16 in holes.[7] Use every pin the manual shows.
4. The rating and its scope. REP rates its flip-down safeties at 700 lb per pair for the 1000 Series and 1,000 lb per pair for the 4000 and 5000 Series, read on its EU storefront.[6] REP lists its Strap Safeties 2.0 at 700 lb for the 1000 Series and 1,000 lb for the 5000 Series.[8] Titan lists 650 lb rackable for its T-3/X-3 pin and pipe set[4] and states an 800 lb combined dynamic drop capacity for its T-3 strap spotter arms.[7] Synergee rates its straps to catch up to 750 lb.[5] Rogue calls its Monster strap "safety-rated for 10,000 lb"; that describes the strap material, not what the system can catch.[2] The load ratings guide explains these terms.
5. The inspection the maker prescribes. Rogue's Monster strap manual says to check that each hanger's pin notch is fully seated on the upright wall and to inspect all rigging before each use.[9] In February 2021 the CPSC announced recall 21-721 of about 1,940 REP PR-4000 and PR-5000 strap safety brackets because poorly welded brackets could detach.[10] That recall covered those brackets only. How to choose
Measure the inside depth of your rack and note its upright and hole size, then pick a safety whose maker lists that combination and states a rating and a lock. Three approved options do. Synergee straps come in 2x2, 2x3 and 3x3 versions by inside depth and lock with a rear tension knob. Titan's T-3 strap spotter arms are for T-3 racks and other racks with 2x3 in uprights and 11/16 in holes.[7] Titan's X-3 spotter arms are for X-3 racks; Titan says each arm supports up to 1,500 lb.

Common questions
Is a 1,000 lb J-cup rating per cup or per pair?
Only the maker's wording can say. REP lists 1,000 lb rackable for its Round Sandwich J-Cups without a per-cup or per-pair scope, while Bells of Steel calls its 1,000 lb figure 'combined'. If the scope is not stated, treat it as unknown and ask the maker. More in Rack attachment load ratings: pair, peg, combined, drop and rackable
What is dynamic vs static capacity?
A static figure is for a resting load; a dynamic or drop figure is for a load that lands. For the same change in momentum, a shorter stop means a larger average force, which is why the numbers differ. No source gives a conversion between them. More in Rack attachment load ratings: pair, peg, combined, drop and rackable
Do rack attachments have to meet a safety standard?
ASTM F2276, F3105 and F3104 and ISO 20957-4 cover fitness equipment, external weight storage and free-standing barbell racks. No attachment in the sources we read states that it meets one, and ISO 20957-2 covers stacked-weight machines, not racks. More in Rack attachment load ratings: pair, peg, combined, drop and rackable
Can I add the ratings of two attachments together?
No. Each rating covers only its own part on its listed host, so J-cups and safeties on the same rack never make a combined system rating. More in Rack attachment load ratings: pair, peg, combined, drop and rackable
Are REP strap safeties recalled?
CPSC recall 21-721 of February 11, 2021 covered about 1,940 REP PR-4000 and PR-5000 strap safety brackets (SKUs PRA-4120 and PRA-5122) sold April to December 2020. It does not cover other REP products or revisions; check the notice against your SKU. More in Rack attachment recalls and pre-use inspection
How do I check if my rack attachment is recalled?
Search the CPSC and SaferProducts.gov by brand, model and date, check Health Canada if you are in Canada, and ask the maker with your SKU. The CPSC does not guarantee the accuracy of SaferProducts.gov reports. More in Rack attachment recalls and pre-use inspection
What should I inspect before lifting?
Follow the maker's manual. Rogue's strap manuals say each hanger's pin notch must be fully seated and all rigging inspected before each use; Oak Club says to check pin installation before each lift. More in Rack attachment recalls and pre-use inspection
Where do I report a failure?
In the US, on SaferProducts.gov; in Canada, through Health Canada's online consumer incident reporting form. Tell the maker as well. More in Rack attachment recalls and pre-use inspection
Questions
Which safeties fit my rack?
Only the ones the safety maker or the rack maker lists for your rack and its depth. Rogue says its Monster spotter arms and strap system fit only Monster Series racks, and Rogue says Safety Spotter Arms should not be used on its RML-390F Flat Foot rack at all.[1][2][11]
Are straps rated higher than pin-pipe?
Not as a type: compare the numbers each maker gives for the exact product, in its own wording. Titan lists 650 lb rackable for its T-3/X-3 pin and pipe set and 800 lb combined dynamic drop capacity for its T-3 strap spotter arms. Rogue's '10,000 lb' strap figure describes the strap material, not the system.[4][7][2]
What length safety straps do I need?
Measure your rack's inside depth and pick the option the strap maker lists for it. Synergee sells 23, 29 and 35 in inside-depth options, with the 2x2 version in 23 in only.[5]
Were REP strap safeties recalled?
In February 2021 the CPSC announced recall 21-721 of about 1,940 REP PR-4000 and PR-5000 strap safety brackets, because poorly welded brackets could detach when weight dropped onto the straps. The recall covered those brackets only, not later REP products.[10]
