Rack pins, band pegs and hardware: hole, pin and bolt sizes

Rack hole diameter vs pin size, the 5/8 in and 1 in hardware classes, the pin each attachment maker specifies, shaft length, retention, and what we know about band pegs.

Short answer

Use the pin or bolt size your rack maker lists, and for an attachment, the pin its maker specifies. Hole diameter and pin diameter are two different numbers, and near-miss sizes are not interchangeable: a 5/8 in pin is 15.875 mm, slightly less than the 16 mm some makers print beside it.[1] Then check shaft length and how the pin is retained.

Why small hardware matters

Pins, bolts and pegs are where an attachment meets the rack. A J-cup, safety or storage peg is only as secure as the pin that holds it, and that pin was sized by the attachment maker for one hole class. Getting it wrong does not show up until there is weight on it.

The decisions, in order

1. Hole diameter vs pin size. A rack's hole diameter is the opening in the upright; the pin diameter is the shaft that goes into it. They are never the same number. Titan lists 11/16 in holes on its T-3 racks[2] and a 5/8 in pin for its T-3 J-hooks.[3] An 11/16 in hole is 17.4625 mm, about 1/16 in larger than 5/8 in,[1] and that difference alone does not establish fit. The hole vs pin guide explains how to read both.

2. Hardware class. Most racks fall into a 5/8 in or a 1 in hardware class, and the same 3x3 in tube is sold with both. Rogue lists 5/8 in holes and 5/8 in J-cup pins on the SML-2[4] and 1 in hardware on the RM-6 Monster Rack.[5] REP lists 5/8 in hardware on the PR-4000 and 1 in hardware on the PR-5000.[6] Bells of Steel uses 5/8 in holes on Hydra racks and 1 in holes on Manticore racks.[7] Some racks sit outside both: Sunny lists a 3/4 in hardware peg hole on its SF-XF9933 half rack,[8] which is 19.05 mm.[1] Force USA prints MyRack accessory holes as "5/8 in (16 mm)" and gives no pin size.[9] See 5/8 in vs 1 in rack hardware.

3. The pin the attachment maker specifies. Bells of Steel says Manticore side holes combine a 1 in opening with a 5/8 in opening so 5/8 in Hydra attachments can pin in;[7] that is a statement about its own parts, not other brands'. Titan's T-3 accessory support page lists a 5/8 in quick pin diameter.[3] If the attachment's lock does not line up with your holes, read when the locking pin does not line up and contact the maker.

4. Shaft length. A pin has to pass fully through the upright and the attachment. Oak Club sells its MagPin 3 in 1 in and 5/8 in shaft sizes with 4 1/2 in of usable shaft length.[10] Compare that number with your tube and attachment before you buy.

5. Retention. Hitch pins, detent pins, clevis pins and magnetic pins stay in by different means. Oak Club publishes no magnet strength or structural rating for its MagPin.[10] The locking methods guide and replacement pins guide compare them.

Bolts and band pegs

Some attachments bolt on rather than pin in. Rogue's Monster Strap Safety System manual lists four 5/8 x 4.75 in hex bolts and four 5/8 in nylock nuts.[11] Use the bolts the manual lists.

For band pegs, the only verified fact is an exclusion: Rogue states that band pegs should not be used with its RML-390F Flat Foot Monster Lite rack.[12] Our sources publish no band-peg dimensions or ratings, so we do not recommend any.

How to choose

Find your rack's hole class first, then buy pins its maker sells for it. Two approved magnetic pins are made for one rack line each. Bells of Steel's Hydra pin is for 3x3 in Hydra uprights with 5/8 in holes and has a 5.0 in shaft; its Manticore pin is for 1 in holes with a 5.1 in shaft. Bells of Steel publishes no load rating for either, and its warranty gives pins 90 days.[13]

Picks that fit2 products

Choose the Hydra pin (MAG-PIN-HDR, 5/8 in holes) for a Bells of Steel Hydra rack, or the Manticore pin (PIN-MAG-MTC, 1 in holes) for a Manticore rack.

Common questions

Can I use 5/8 in J-cups on a 1 in rack?

Only if the J-cup maker lists your rack or sells a converter for it. Rogue, for example, sells its Ghost Roller J-Cups 2.0 in separate 1 in and 5/8 in versions for Monster and Monster Lite units. More in 5/8 in vs 1 in rack hardware

What is a keyhole?

A hole that joins a larger opening to a smaller one. Bells of Steel says Manticore side holes combine a 1 in opening with a 5/8 in opening so 5/8 in Hydra attachments can pin in. More in 5/8 in vs 1 in rack hardware

Do converters work on any rack?

No. A converter adapts a pin to a hole class; it does not make an attachment fit a different upright or pitch. Synergee sells some J-cup variants without the converter, so confirm it is in the variant you choose. More in 5/8 in vs 1 in rack hardware

Is 5/8 in hardware the same as 16 mm?

No. 5/8 in works out to 15.875 mm. The two are close labels, not the same size. More in 5/8 in vs 1 in rack hardware

My J-cup's lock pin misses the hole. Is it safe to use?

Treat it as not installed. Take it off the rack and contact the attachment maker with your rack model, year and hole spacing. More in When an attachment's locking pin does not line up

Can I drill a new hole?

No. Do not drill, file, bend or ream the rack or the attachment, and do not leave the pin out. REP says products modified outside REP lose warranty coverage, and the lock exists for a reason. More in When an attachment's locking pin does not line up

Why do Titan parts not lock on my REP rack?

Titan lists T-2 holes at 2 in on center and REP lists the PR-1100 at 3 in, so a part built for one pitch can miss on the other. Garage Gym Experiment reported that T-2 accessories relying on lock-in pins did not fully work on a PR-1100. More in When an attachment's locking pin does not line up

Does the rack maker guarantee other brands' parts?

REP says it does not guarantee compatibility with other companies' products and that warranties can be voided in those cases. More in When an attachment's locking pin does not line up

Questions

What size pins does my rack use?

The size your rack maker lists, which is often a class rather than a measured hole. Rogue lists 1 in hardware on the RM-6 Monster Rack and 5/8 in holes on the SML-2; REP lists 5/8 in hardware on the PR-4000 and 1 in on the PR-5000. Check your rack's page in the fit finder.[5][4][6]

Are magnetic pins safe?

We can only report what makers say. Oak Club says its MagPins are for experienced lifters only, tells users to check installation before each lift and to always use a failsafe method of attachment securement, and publishes no structural rating.[10]

Can I use band pegs on any rack?

No. Rogue states that band pegs should not be used with its RML-390F Flat Foot Monster Lite rack. Our sources publish no band-peg dimensions or ratings, so use only pegs your rack maker lists for your rack.[12]

What bolts does a Rogue strap system use?

Rogue's Monster Strap Safety System manual lists four strap hangers, two straps, four 5/8 x 4.75 in hex bolts and four 5/8 in nylock nuts.[11]
