Short answer
Replace a damaged or cracked blade at once, and never repair or alter one: that is what Toro's manual for its 21465 Recycler says. Toro schedules replacing or sharpening that model's blade yearly, more often if the edge dulls quickly. Your own mower's manual sets your interval.
What the manual says
Toro's manual for the 22-inch Recycler, model 21465, gives three blade rules:
- Inspect. Always check that the blades and blade bolts are not worn or damaged.[1]
- Replace damage at once. If the blade is damaged or cracked, replace it immediately, and do not repair or alter the blades.[1]
- Yearly interval. Replace the blade or have it sharpened yearly, more often if the edge dulls quickly.[1]
The interval is Toro's for that model. Other mowers have their own schedules, so read yours. This guide gives no sharpening or balancing steps; follow your manual or have a dealer do it.
Signs in the lawn
University of California IPM says lawns injured by dull mower blades turn somewhat gray soon after mowing, and that torn or shredded leaf tips later turn yellow to brown.[2] It adds that turf weakened by blade injury is more susceptible to drought or diseases, and advises sharpening blades as needed.[2]
Those are UC IPM's general turf signs. They tell you to look at the blade, not which blade to buy.
Before you work on the blade
Toro's 21465 manual says to shut off the engine, wait for all moving parts to stop, disconnect the spark-plug wire before maintenance and wear gloves when servicing the blade.[1] It also says to keep bystanders and children out of the operating area and to stop the machine if anyone enters it.[1] Battery and corded mowers have their own procedures in their manuals.
Installing the new blade
For the 21465, Toro says to position the curved ends of the blade to point toward the mower housing.[1] That is Toro's instruction for that model. Other blades go on as their own mower's manual shows. Tighten the blade bolt to the value in your mower's manual; we publish no torque figures.
Buying the right replacement
Order by part number, not by eye.
- Toro sells its 22-inch Recycler blade 59534P individually,[3] and says it replaces part 59534.[4] Toro's page names no machines and asks owners to verify make and serial number, so check its parts lookup for your model. See the Toro Recycler 21465 page.
- RYOBI lists its 21-inch blade AC04025 for the RY401014, RY401016, RY40HPLM05 and RY40HPLM01, and excludes the RY40LM01, RY40LM10-Y and RY401130.[5] See the RYOBI RY401014 page.
If the old number is gone, our blade measuring guide shows which fields to record.
