OEM vs aftermarket mower blades
When an aftermarket blade is a real candidate, what a trustworthy cross-reference names, what Toro says about other makers' parts, and an aftermarket recall.

Short answer
An aftermarket blade is a candidate only when its maker cross-references your OEM part number, or publishes the same length, hole and count your deck takes. Toro's manual for its 21465 Recycler recommends genuine Toro parts and says other makers' parts and accessories could be dangerous. No source we found measures aftermarket blades against OEM ones.
What the mower maker says
Toro's manual for the 22-inch Recycler, model 21465, says to use only genuine Toro replacement parts and accessories, and warns that parts made by other manufacturers could be dangerous.[1] That is Toro's statement for its own machine. See the Toro Recycler 21465 page. Your own mower's manual may say something similar; read it before you switch.
What a good cross-reference names
A useful cross-reference names the exact OEM numbers it replaces:
- Craftsman lists CMXGZAM110136 as a replacement for Craftsman, Husqvarna, Poulan and Poulan Pro riding mowers using 532138971, 532138498, 532127843 or 127843.[2]
- Oregon lists its 92-105 as a replacement for John Deere parts including GX21784, GX21785, GX21786, GY20852 and AM137757.[3]
- Oregon lists its 91-635 Gator G3 as a replacement for Cub Cadet.[4]
A list of numbers is easier to check than a brand name alone. If your number is on the list, still compare length, center hole and blade count. Our part number guide covers how.
A different hole, with a stated fit
Some aftermarket blades do not copy the OEM hole. Oregon explains that MTD-built blades with a 6-point star are replaced by Oregon blades with a Y-shaped hole that fits the 6-point star on the spindle, and MTD-built walk-behind blades with a bow-tie hole by Oregon blades with a rectangular hole that fits the bow-tie adapter.[5] Those are Oregon's stated fits for MTD-built mowers only. See 6-point star holes and bow-tie holes. Never alter a hole to make any blade fit.
Upgrade or replacement
Oregon markets its 96-347 Gator G3 as "not a replacement blade" but an upgrade.[6] That wording is Oregon's marketing. It tells you nothing about fit; only the record does.
Where Oregon sells
Oregon's direct web store calls itself the official online store for Oregon products.[7] Its part finder lets you search by brand and model or by the OEM part number you are replacing.[8]
Aftermarket parts get recalled too
In January 2018, SureFit recalled riding-mower blade spindle shafts and assemblies, models 504-00341 and 504-00346, sold as aftermarket replacements for John Deere riding mowers, because the shaft can break and eject pieces.[9] That recall covers those two parts only. It is not evidence about any other aftermarket part, but it is a reason to check the CPSC recall list for any part you buy.
What no source shows
We found no independent comparison of OEM and aftermarket blade durability or safety. We could not confirm MaxPower's quality claims or its store. So this guide does not say any aftermarket blade is as good as, or worse than, an OEM one.

Questions
Are aftermarket mower blades as good as OEM?
No source we found measures that. Toro's 21465 manual recommends genuine Toro parts and says other makers' parts could be dangerous.[1]
What makes an aftermarket cross-reference trustworthy?
It names exact OEM numbers, as Craftsman does for CMXGZAM110136 (532138971, 532138498, 532127843, 127843). Then check length, hole and count against your deck.[2]
Why does the aftermarket blade's center hole look different?
Oregon uses Y-shaped holes for MTD-built 6-point star spindles and rectangular holes for MTD-built bow-tie adapters, and says each fits that pattern. That is Oregon's stated fit for MTD-built mowers only.[5]
Have aftermarket mower parts been recalled?
Yes. In January 2018 SureFit recalled spindle shafts 504-00341 and 504-00346, sold as aftermarket replacements for John Deere riding mowers, because the shaft can break and eject pieces.[9]
