Blades per deck and blade length
Oregon lists three 17-1/16 in blades for one 48 in cut and two 25 in blades for another. Why deck width never gives blade length, count or cut direction.

Short answer
A deck's width does not tell you its blade length or its blade count. Oregon lists 17-1/16 inch blades used three per 48-inch cut, and 25-inch blades used two per 48-inch cut on other decks. Find your own deck's blade record by part number, then match length, hole and count.
Same width, different blades
The nominal deck width is the cut width the maker names the deck by. It is a label, not a blade spec. Two Oregon records show why:
- Oregon's 92-105 mulching blade is 17-1/16 inches long with a 7-point star center hole, and Oregon says it takes three blades for a 48-inch cut.[1]
- Oregon's 91-544 is a 25-inch low-lift blade, used two per 48-inch cut and three per 72-inch cut.[2]
Both are 48-inch decks. One takes three short blades and the other two long ones. Blades overlap and spindles sit at different spacings, so dividing the deck width by the number of blades gives a number that matches neither. Do not do it.
Sets by deck
Some aftermarket sets are sold by deck. Oregon sells 42TGR1HL2 as a set of two for 42-inch Toro/Exmark riding mower decks, and 50TGR1HL3 as a set of three for 50-inch Toro/Exmark zero-turn decks.[3] Those counts are for those Toro and Exmark decks only. They do not set the count for every 42-inch or 50-inch deck.
Is a listing one blade or a set?
Read the count on every listing.
- Toro's 115-5059-03 is a single 17.5-inch replacement blade for select TimeCutters built in 2011 and later.[4]
- Toro's 79016P page names a pack in its title but says in its text that the blade is sold individually.[5] Check the quantity at purchase.
A blade set that covers one 42-inch deck may not cover yours, and a "set" can hold a single blade. Craftsman's 42-inch CMXGZAM110108, for example, contains one blade.[6] Our 42-inch blade set guide compares the counts.
Deck construction changes parts
The way a deck is built also matters. Husqvarna's fit chart classifies baggers and mulch kits by deck size and by deck style: Stamped, Fabricated, Clear Cut and LRV.[7] Cub Cadet's manual for its 50/54-inch double bagger says 54-inch fabricated decks take the discharge chute directly, while 50 and 54-inch stamped decks need a chute adapter first.[8] See the 54-inch deck page.
Left-hand and right-hand blades
Some decks use blades made for opposite cut directions. Oregon's catalog records an L-cut flag for each blade,[9] and its online catalog filters by left- or right-hand cut.[3] There is no brand-wide rule for which direction a deck uses. Match each spindle position to your deck's own record.

Questions
How many blades does a 42, 48 or 50-inch deck have?
It depends on the deck. Oregon lists three blades for one 48-inch cut and two for another, a set of two for 42-inch Toro/Exmark riding decks and a set of three for 50-inch Toro/Exmark zero-turn decks.[1][2][3]
Can I divide the deck width by the number of blades to get blade length?
No. Oregon's 48-inch examples use 17-1/16 in blades three per cut and 25 in blades two per cut; neither matches a simple division.[1][2]
