Short answer

Buy accessories by tool size, not portafilter size. Breville's 54 mm Bambino, Barista Express, Pro and Touch take tampers and puck screens of about 53.3 mm, and the 58 mm baskets we checked are made for a 58.4 mm tamper, although one accessory maker lists 58.5 mm.[1][2][3] Look up your machine below. If you have changed the basket, the basket maker's number wins.

Each machine links to its own page, where every number carries its source. "Not confirmed" means we found no maker or basket-maker source we could verify for that figure, so we leave it blank rather than guess. Tamper and puck-screen sizes are the tool diameters that makers recommend or design for. If you have swapped in a different basket, its maker's figure replaces the one shown. You can also use the machine size finder.

Three numbers people mix up

NumberWhat it describesExample
Portafilter sizeThe nominal name of the system"54 mm" for Breville's Bambino and Barista Express families[4][5][6][7]
Basket inside diameterThe space the coffee and tamper occupy54 mm inside IMS's Breville basket[8]
Tool sizeThe tamper or puck-screen diameter that fits53 to 53.4 mm for that same IMS basket[8]

Labels are not measurements. Gaggia's own pages give its wooden-handle filter holder a 58 mm filter diameter, but list its bottomless filter holder as 59 mm and the IMS filter bundled with it as 70 mm.[9][10] None of those is the diameter a tamper needs.

Why the tool is smaller than the label

A tamper has to slide into the basket without scraping or sticking, so it is made slightly smaller than the basket's inside diameter. How much smaller depends on the basket.

Breville 54 mm machines. Normcore designs its 53.3 mm tamper for 54 mm baskets, and IMS lists 53/53.4 mm for its 54 mm Breville basket.[1][8] Breville's own Barista Express guide calls the integrated tamper 54 mm, which is the nominal size of the system, not a precision fit.[11] Tool sizes for the Express Impress and Touch Impress are not confirmed: Normcore's guide does not list them, and Normcore says its 53.3 mm dosing cup is not compatible with the Express Impress or similar models.[3][12]

58 mm machines, where sources disagree. VST specifies 58.40 mm (+0.00 / −0.05 mm) for its 58 mm-class baskets, IMS gives 58/58.4 mm for its B70 family, Flair calls 58.4 mm the best fit and 58.5 mm the largest for the Flair 58, and Profitec's PRO 400 & JUMP manual recommends 58.4 mm.[2][13][14][15][16] Normcore's compatibility guide, though, lists a 58.5 mm tamper for most 58 mm machines.[3] Decent uses a 58.35 mm base and advises against 58.5 mm, because a very close fit can lift the puck as you raise the tamper.[17]

We follow the basket maker: if you know your basket, use its maker's figure. If you do not, 58.35 to 58.4 mm is where most of these sources agree. Our 58 vs 58.5 mm tamper guide goes through each source.

So there is no single "minus half a millimeter" rule. Prefer the basket maker's number, then the machine maker's, then your own measurement.

How to measure your own basket

  1. Take the basket out and clean it.
  2. Measure the inside diameter where the coffee bed ends up, roughly halfway down, not across the rolled top rim. Many baskets taper: Flair's standard basket is 58.7 mm at the top and 58.5 mm lower down.[15]
  3. Use digital calipers. A ruler cannot resolve tenths of a millimeter.
  4. Measure twice, at right angles, and use the smaller reading.
  5. Look up the basket maker's page if the basket is stamped with a brand or code. That number beats any measurement taken at home.
  6. Check the depth for unusual baskets. Cafelat's Robot Professional basket, for example, is 57.8 mm inside and 60 mm deep, and Cafelat's own leveling tamper is about 57.4 mm.[18]

Puck screens and dosing funnels

Puck screens sit on top of the tamped coffee, so they are sized like a tamper. Normcore lists a 53.3 mm screen for Breville's 54 mm machines and 58.5 mm for most 58 mm machines.[3] Whatever the label, a screen must drop in and lift out without force. It also takes up space above the coffee; if the portafilter becomes hard to lock after adding one, lower the dose slightly.

Dosing funnels sit on the portafilter rim rather than inside the basket, so they follow the portafilter size: Breville's own funnel is 54 mm, and ECM's and Profitec's are 58 mm.[19][20][21] Watch for model exceptions: Normcore says its 53.3 mm dosing cup is not compatible with the Barista Express Impress or similar models.[12]

Machines that need their own tools

  • Lelit Anna (LELIT57). Lelit says the Anna is compatible with LELIT57 barista tools but publishes no diameter.[22] Normcore lists a 57.5 mm tamper and says these machines need 57 mm tools.[3] Do not buy generic 58 mm tools for it. Lelit's Victoria, Mara X and Bianca use the separate LELIT58 system.[23][24][25]
  • De'Longhi manual machines. De'Longhi says its 51 mm DLSC080 tamper fits all its manual espresso machine portafilters.[26]
  • Flair PRO 2. Flair gives a 46 mm basket and 45.5 mm tools.[27]
  • Cafelat Robot. A nominal 58 mm basket that is 57.8 mm inside and unusually deep, with a leveling tamper of about 57.4 mm.[18]

Bottomless portafilters are a separate question

Basket diameter does not decide whether a portafilter locks into your machine; the locking ears do. Buy a bottomless portafilter only when your exact model is listed. Breville, for example, sells two different 54 mm portafilters: one listed for the Barista Express, Pro and Touch models and one listed only for the Bambino Plus and its Baratza bundle.[7][28] A US retailer lists De'Longhi's own 51 mm bottomless portafilter for named La Specialista and Dedica Maestro models, but not for the Dedica EC685 or EC885.[29] Our guide to why a portafilter won't lock covers the rest.

What this means for our picks

Listings we recommend are sold by size. Normcore's and IMS's sizes are the makers' own; the AliExpress sizes are the seller's sizing. We have not checked any of them against a basket:

  • Normcore sells its V4 tamper and its puck screen in 53.3 mm and its dosing funnel in 54 mm, the sizes its guide gives for Breville's 54 mm machines; its 58.5 mm tamper and screen follow its 58 mm-machine sizing.[3] We link these on Amazon.
  • IMS's B62.52TH24E basket for Breville 54 mm machines is 54 mm inside and made for a 53 to 53.4 mm tamper.[8]
  • The IKAPE V3 calibrated tamper comes with a 51.0, 53.30 or 58.5 mm base; the seller lists the 53.30 mm base for 54 mm baskets.
  • The MHW-3BOMBER puck screen comes in 51, 53, 53.35 and 58.5 mm. The 53.35 mm size is close to the 53.3 mm precision fit for Breville baskets.
  • The ALIKISSCAFE calibrated tamper comes in 51, 53 and 58 mm. Its 53 mm base is slightly smaller than the 53.3 mm precision fit.
  • The ALIKISSCAFE puck screen comes in 51, 53.5 and 58.5 mm. Its 53.5 mm size is slightly larger than the 53.3 mm fit, so check that it drops in freely.
  • The ALIKISSCAFE dosing ring comes in 51, 53–54 and 58 mm.

Picks that fit4 products

For the Breville Bambino, Barista Express, Pro and Touch, choose the Normcore 53.3 mm tamper and 53.3 mm screen (Normcore's own sizes), or the IKAPE 53.30 mm base and the MHW 53.35 mm screen (the sellers' sizing).

More on choosing

For De'Longhi 51 mm machines, choose the IKAPE and MHW 51 mm versions. For the Normcore items on Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or Normcore.

Questions

What size tamper do I need for a 54 mm Breville?

About 53.3 mm for the Bambino, Barista Express, Pro and Touch: Normcore designs its 53.3 mm tamper for 54 mm baskets, and IMS lists 53/53.4 mm for its Breville basket. Tool fit for the Impress models is not confirmed.[1][8][3]

Is a 58 mm tamper right for a 58 mm portafilter?

It fits, but many 58 mm baskets are made for a slightly larger tamper: VST specifies 58.40 mm and IMS 58/58.4 mm. Normcore lists 58.5 mm, while Decent advises against 58.5 mm. Go by your basket; see 58 vs 58.5 mm tampers.[2][14][3][17]

What size tamper fits De'Longhi machines?

51 mm. De'Longhi says its 51 mm DLSC080 tamper fits all De'Longhi manual espresso machine portafilters.[26]

What tamper fits the Lelit Anna?

Lelit says the Anna uses its LELIT57 group and LELIT57 tools but publishes no diameter. Normcore lists a 57.5 mm tamper for it. Do not buy generic 58 mm tools for a LELIT57 machine.[22][3]

How do I measure my basket?

With digital calipers, across the inside of the clean basket at the depth where the coffee bed sits, not across the rolled rim. Baskets taper: Flair's standard basket is 58.7 mm at the top and 58.5 mm lower down.[15]

What tamper fits the Cafelat Robot?

Not a standard 58 mm-class tamper. Cafelat's Robot Professional basket is 57.8 mm inside and 60 mm deep, and Cafelat's own leveling tamper for it is about 57.4 mm.[18][30]
