Short answer
The Barista Express has a 54 mm portafilter and an 18 g dose. Breville calls the built-in tamper 54 mm, which is the nominal size; for an aftermarket tamper or puck screen, buy about 53.3 mm, the size Normcore lists for this machine. Breville's own 54 mm dosing funnel (BEA201) is listed for it. Breville's guide adds three practical points: tamp using 15 kilos of pressure, use the single-wall baskets with fresh beans, and run the cleaning cycle with the cleaning disc when the CLEAN ME light shows.

Questions
What size tamper fits the Breville Barista Express?
About 53.3 mm for an aftermarket tamper. Breville calls the built-in tamper 54 mm, the nominal size; Normcore lists 53.3 mm for the Barista Express, and IMS's Breville baskets call for 53 or 53.4 mm.[7][3][5]
How hard does Breville say to tamp on the Barista Express?
Breville's guide says to tamp using 15 kilos of pressure. In a controlled test, Socratic Coffee found no TDS difference between 5, 10, 15 and 20 kg tamps; see how hard to tamp.[7][8]
Do Barista Express accessories fit the Express Impress?
The portafilter and Breville's funnel do: Breville lists spare part SP0027237 and its BEA201 dosing funnel for both. Not every 53.3 mm accessory does, though: Normcore says its 53.3 mm dosing cup is not compatible with the Express Impress.[2][6][9]
What is the cleaning disc for?
Breville's cleaning cycle. When the CLEAN ME light shows, the guide says to back-flush using the 1 CUP basket, the supplied cleaning disc and one cleaning tablet; it takes about 5 minutes and is separate from descaling.[7]
