For most readers, the right tamper is simply the right size. For Breville's 54 mm machines, order the Normcore V4 with the 53.3 mm base: Normcore lists that size for them and designs it for 54 mm baskets.[1][2] For 58 mm machines with stock baskets, order the ALIKISSCAFE with the 58 mm flat base. For De'Longhi, order a 51 mm base from IKAPE or Normcore. Normcore's 58.5 mm tamper suits only baskets that allow 58.5 mm. All five picks are spring-loaded.
Best for Breville 54 mm machines
Normcore V4 spring-loaded tamper, 53.3 mm
Pick it if: Bambino, Bambino Plus, Barista Express, Pro and Touch owners replacing the stock tamper
- Why it's here
- The one tamper here whose maker documents the size for these machines: Normcore lists its 53.3 mm tamper for the Bambino, Bambino Plus and Barista Express, Pro and Touch, and designs the base for 54 mm baskets. The V4 ships with 15, 25 and 30 lb springs, so you choose the force.
- Watch out
- The fit is Normcore's sizing, not measured, and Normcore does not list the Express Impress or Touch Impress. On Amazon the seller varies and Normcore names none, so check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or Normcore.

Best for 58 mm machines with stock baskets
ALIKISSCAFE 30 lb constant-pressure calibrated tamper
Pick it if: Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia and E61 owners who want a fixed tamping force
- Why it's here
- A 58 mm flat base, the size Gaggia and Rocket use for their own tampers, with a spring the seller says stops at 30 lb. Also sold in 51 and 53 mm, by a store named ALIKISSCAFE Official Store.
- Watch out
- The 30 lb figure is the seller's claim. A 58 mm base is looser than the 58.4 mm some baskets specify, and the listing also sells a threaded base, so check you have selected the flat one.

Best for De'Longhi 51 mm machines
IKAPE V3 calibrated spring-loaded tamper
Pick it if: Dedica, La Specialista and Dedica Maestro owners; also a second option for Breville 54 mm machines
- Why it's here
- Its 51.0 mm base (the seller's sizing) matches the 51 mm of De'Longhi's own tamper. The same listing sells a 53.30 mm base for Breville's 54 mm machines, inside the 53 to 53.4 mm range IMS gives for its Breville basket. Spring-loaded, from a store named IKAPE Official Store.
- Watch out
- Base sizes and the spring action are the seller's claims, not measured, and we have no spring-force figure. Its 58.5 mm base is larger than the 58.40 mm VST specifies, so it is not the pick for precision 58 mm baskets.

Normcore's 58.5 mm size, for baskets that allow it
Normcore V4 spring-loaded tamper, 58.5 mm
Pick it if: Owners of 58 mm machines on Normcore's list who keep the stock basket and want a close fit
- Why it's here
- Normcore lists a 58.5 mm tamper for the Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, Breville Dual Boiler and Oracle, and many E61 machines. The V4 ships with 15, 25 and 30 lb springs.
- Watch out
- 58.5 mm is larger than the 58.4 mm that VST, IMS and Profitec's PRO 400 manual specify, and Decent advises against 58.5 mm, so skip it with a precision basket. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or Normcore.

A second 51 mm option for De'Longhi
Normcore spring-loaded tamper, 51 mm
Pick it if: Dedica, La Specialista and Dedica Maestro owners
- Why it's here
- A Normcore spring-loaded tamper with a 51 mm base, the same diameter as De'Longhi's own tamper for its manual machines.
- Watch out
- Normcore's size guide has no De'Longhi rows, so the De'Longhi fit is the listing's claim, not Normcore's, and we have no spring-force figure for it. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or Normcore.

Which variant to order for your machine
The second column is what machine, basket and accessory makers publish. The Normcore column is Normcore's own sizing, except at 51 mm, where Normcore's guide has no De'Longhi rows;[1] the IKAPE and ALIKISSCAFE columns are the sellers' sizing. Bold marks the variant we would order.
| Your machine | Tamper size the makers give | Normcore | IKAPE V3 | ALIKISSCAFE 30 lb |

For De'Longhi machines the three 51 mm options are the same size on paper; choose on the mechanism and the seller. The machine size finder shows the sourced sizes for single models.
How we chose
- A size the maker documents, where one exists. Normcore publishes a size guide by machine. It covers Breville's 54 mm machines and many 58 mm machines, but not De'Longhi.[1]
- A seller you can check. The IKAPE and ALIKISSCAFE tampers come from AliExpress stores named IKAPE Official Store and ALIKISSCAFE Official Store; a store's name alone does not show that the brand runs it. The Normcore tampers are sold on Amazon, where the seller can vary: check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or Normcore.
- A base size named for each variant, with options for De'Longhi 51 mm, Breville 54 mm and 58 mm baskets.
- A spring mechanism. The evidence gives no reason to chase a particular force: Socratic Coffee found no significant TDS difference between tamps of 5 and 20 kg.[14] What a spring adds is the same tamp every time.
- A flat base available. VST, for example, gives its 58.40 mm tamper size for a flat base.[8]
- Checked on 2026-10-06. The AliExpress listings were viewed with US shipping; their base sizes, spring force and materials are the sellers' claims. Normcore's sizes and springs come from Normcore's own pages. We have not measured any of them.
Which spring tamper?
All five are spring-loaded: you press until the spring bottoms out, so the force is the same each time. ALIKISSCAFE states its spring force as 30 lb, and Normcore ships its V4 with 15, 25 and 30 lb springs so you can choose.[2] We have no force figure for the IKAPE or for Normcore's 51 mm tamper. The number is a convention rather than a target, so choose on size first, using the table above. For how spring, calibrated and impact designs differ, see calibrated vs spring vs impact tampers.
Skip these if
- You want a 58.4 mm tamper, the size VST, IMS and Profitec's PRO 400 manual point to.[8][15] None of our picks comes in that size.
- You own a Lelit Anna, Flair PRO 2 or Cafelat Robot. They need LELIT57 tools, 45.5 mm tools and Cafelat's own roughly 57.4 mm tamper.[10][11][12]
- Your current tamper already fills the basket and you tamp level. A spring adds repeatability, not extraction; see how hard to tamp.
Before you order
- Select the variant at checkout. The ALIKISSCAFE listing sells its 58 mm base in flat and threaded versions. Each Normcore tamper we link is a single size, so open the one for your size.
- For a Normcore tamper on Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or Normcore before you buy.
- If you have fitted an aftermarket basket, check its maker's tamper size first; the basket size guide shows how.
- Our ALIKISSCAFE tamper research notes list what that listing claims and what is unverified.
Questions
Which tamper size should I order for a Breville Barista Express?
53.3 mm. Normcore lists its 53.3 mm tamper for the Barista Express, and IMS gives 53 to 53.4 mm for its Breville basket. The Normcore V4 53.3 mm and the IKAPE 53.30 mm base (the seller's sizing) both match; the ALIKISSCAFE 53 mm base is slightly smaller.[1][3]
Is a 30 lb calibrated tamper better than a 15 lb one?
No evidence says so. Socratic Coffee found no significant TDS difference between 5 and 20 kg tamps, and Normcore sells 15, 25 and 30 lb springs for the same tamper. The point of a spring is repeatability, not the number.[14][2]
Should I choose the 58 mm or the 58.5 mm base?
Go by your basket. Gaggia and Rocket supply 58 mm tampers, IMS lists 58 or 58.4 mm for its baskets and VST specifies 58.40 mm. Normcore lists 58.5 mm for many 58 mm machines, but Decent Espresso advises against 58.5 mm because a very close fit can lift the puck.[5][6][7][8][1][16]
Flat or threaded tamper base?
Flat, unless you have a reason to prefer the threaded one. VST, for example, gives its 58.40 mm tamper size for a flat base, and we found no evidence that a threaded base extracts better.[8]
