Short answer

Check the valve and the rims before you buy a pump. A valve with a small locknut at the top is Presta, and some pumps work only with Presta. On hookless road rims, Schwalbe cites ETRTO's 5 bar maximum, even when the tire says more. Confirm your valve with the valve finder; no source says which valve road bikes usually have.

Key facts

Tire and rim pressure limits
Schwalbe says the sidewall pressure range should never be exceeded or undershot. Citing ETRTO, it says hookless road rims have a 5 bar maximum, which applies even when the tire sidewall shows a higher one.[1][2]Schwalbe gives no psi figure; 5 bar is about 72.5 psi by arithmetic.
How to check your valve
Look at the stem. A thin stem (nominally 6 mm, per Park Tool) with a small locknut at the top is Presta; unthread the locknut before pumping, and Park Tool suggests tapping the valve so it is not stuck. A wider stem, about 8 mm, is Schrader. The valve finder on this site walks through each.[3][4]
Pumps and inflation
Makers say which valves a pump takes: SILCA states its Pocket Impero pumps work only with Presta valves. Topeak's mini-pump maximums run from 60 psi on some Mountain models to 160 psi on Roadie TT and Pocket Rocket models.[5][6]Maker ratings. A pump's maximum is not a speed claim.
Tubeless and repair
Schwalbe says a tubeless tire's first inflation needs a strong blast of air from a floor pump, compressor or Tire Booster, and that the rim's maximum applies if it is lower than the tire's.[7]
Handlebar and mounts
Wahoo's out-front mount for the BOLT 3 and ROAM 3 is made for 31.8 mm round bars, and Wahoo warns that over-torquing can strip its threads. Measure your bar before choosing it.[8]Wahoo gives no numeric torque in that article.
Bags and racks

Lighting rules
Rules are set by place, not by kind of bike. For example, California requires a white front lamp visible from 300 feet in darkness, while Oregon requires a white front light visible from at least 500 feet in limited visibility. Check your own state or province.[9][10]

Maker cautions
Topeak's Mini 20 Pro chain tool covers chains up to 12-speed but not Campagnolo hollow-pin chains, and Topeak describes its metal tire levers as for emergency use only.[11]
Not confirmed
No source we read says which valve, rim type or handlebar diameter road bikes usually have. Check the valve, the rim maker's limit and the bar on your own bike.[3][2]

Watch out for

  • A Presta locknut has to be unthreaded before any air goes in.
  • On hookless road rims the 5 bar rim maximum wins over a higher figure on the tire (Schwalbe, citing ETRTO).
  • SILCA's Pocket Impero works only with Presta valves.
  • Lezyne's Speed Chuck is for valve extenders only and fails on a regular threaded Presta valve.

Questions

Does my road bike have Presta valves?

No source we read says which valve road bikes usually have. If the stem has a small locknut at the top that you unthread before pumping, it is Presta. The valve finder walks through it.[3]

Can I pump a tire on hookless rims to the sidewall maximum?

Not above the rim's limit. Schwalbe, citing ETRTO, gives hookless road rims a 5 bar maximum that applies even when the sidewall shows more.[2]

Will a Wahoo out-front mount fit my bar?

Wahoo makes its BOLT 3 / ROAM 3 out-front mount for 31.8 mm round bars. Measure your bar first.[8]
