Short answer

Choose plate storage whose maker lists your rack or your upright and hole size, whose sleeve fits your plates' center hole, and whose rating is stated per peg or per sleeve. Then place it where it stays clear of the bar path. Ratings differ a lot in scope: Synergee rates per peg and per pair,[1] REP rates one storage unit as a whole.[2]

What rack storage does

Rack storage puts plates and bars on the rack itself, on weight horns (also called pegs or sleeves) or in vertical bar holders. It saves floor space, but it adds load to the uprights and can sit close to where you work. The plate storage guide covers horn length and ratings, and the bar storage guide covers placement.

The decisions, in order

1. Mount and host. Some storage bolts on, some pins in like a J-cup. Titan's TITAN Series plate holders are a bolt-on pair, listed for TITAN Series racks only and mounting 4 in on center.[3] Titan's T-2 Series holders hang on the upright by a J-hook pin without tools.[4] REP's 1000 Series Weight Storage fits the PR-1000 and PR-1100.[2] Bells of Steel's change plate pegs come in Hydra (5/8 in holes) and Manticore (1 in holes) versions that bolt on with two bolts.[5]

2. Sleeve diameter for your plates. Synergee lists a 1.98 in peg for 2 in Olympic plate openings.[1] Titan uses 50 mm sleeves on its TITAN Series and T-2 holders.[3] REP's horns are 1.8 in in diameter.[2] Check that your plates' center hole is listed for the sleeve.

3. Usable length. Usable sleeve length decides how many plates fit. Synergee lists 11.8 in per peg,[1] Titan 11.25 in loadable on its TITAN Series holders[3] and 8 in on its T-2 holders.[4] REP's horns are 8 in long.[2]

4. The per-peg rating. Synergee rates its pegs at 250 lb per peg and 500 lb per pair.[1] Titan rates its TITAN Series holders at 330 lb per sleeve[3] and its T-2 holders at 250 lb per holder.[4] REP rates its 1000 Series Weight Storage at up to 2,000 lb for the whole unit, with no per-spot rating.[2] Bells of Steel's change plate pegs page states no load capacity, so we do not treat them as rated storage.[5] Synergee's FAQ also recommends using its pegs on a rack rated for 750 lb or more.[1]

5. Where it sits relative to the bar path. Storage changes the rack's footprint: REP says its 1000 Series storage adds 10 in of depth and 17 in of width to a PR-1000 or PR-1100.[2] For bars, REP says most of its storage is built around standard 2 in Olympic barbells and advises checking slot or tube dimensions and capacity for specialty bars.[6]

How to choose

Pick the mount your rack takes, then compare sleeve size, length and rating. Three approved options state a rating per peg or holder. Synergee's pegs come in 2x2, 2x3 and 3x3 versions and are rated per peg and per pair.[1] Titan's Weight Plate Holders for T-3 and X-3 are a set of four bolt-on 50 mm sleeves; Titan states 330 lb each. Sunny's SF-XFA010 holder is listed for named Sunny cages, with up to 100 lb per holder.

Picks that fit3 products

Synergee: choose your upright (2x2, 2x3 or 3x3) and, for 1 in holes, a version with the 5/8 in / 1 in converter; the NC versions take 5/8 in holes only.

More on choosing

Titan: the set of four is for T-3 and X-3 racks only. Sunny: the SF-XFA010 is only for the Sunny racks it names. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or the brand.

Common questions

Where should I put plate storage on my rack?

Only where its maker lists, and where loaded plates stay outside the bar path, the bench and your walk-out. Usable length shows how far loaded plates reach: 11.25 in on Titan's TITAN Series holders, 11.8 in on Synergee's pegs. More in Bar storage and the rack's working zone

Will specialty bars fit rack bar storage?

Check first. REP says most of its barbell storage is built around standard 2 in Olympic bars and advises checking slot or tube dimensions and capacity for specialty bars. More in Bar storage and the rack's working zone

How much space does rack storage add?

It depends on the product. REP says its 1000 Series weight storage adds 10 in of depth and 17 in of width to a PR-1000 or PR-1100. More in Bar storage and the rack's working zone

Is each bar spot on REP's 1000 Series storage rated?

REP rates the whole unit for up to 2,000 lb and gives no per-spot figure. More in Bar storage and the rack's working zone

How much weight can rack plate storage hold?

Only what its maker states, in its scope. More in Rack plate storage: horn length, sleeve size and per-peg ratings

Will bumper plates fit on 8 in horns?

Measure the total thickness of the plates you want to store and compare it with the usable length: 8 in on Titan's T-2 holders and REP's 1000 Series horns. We have no plate-width figures to answer it for you. More in Rack plate storage: horn length, sleeve size and per-peg ratings

Is a rack rated for plate storage?

Ask your rack's maker. For its own pegs, Synergee recommends a rack rated for 750 lb or more. More in Rack plate storage: horn length, sleeve size and per-peg ratings

Do Bells of Steel change plate pegs have a load rating?

The Bells of Steel page states no load capacity for them, so we do not treat them as rated storage. More in Rack plate storage: horn length, sleeve size and per-peg ratings

Questions

How much can rack plate storage hold?

Only what its maker states, in the maker's scope. Synergee rates its pegs at 250 lb per peg and 500 lb per pair, Titan rates its TITAN Series holders at 330 lb per sleeve, and REP rates its 1000 Series Weight Storage at up to 2,000 lb for the whole unit. Bells of Steel's change plate pegs page states no capacity.[1][3][2][5]

Yes, if the rack maker sells storage for it. REP's 1000 Series Weight Storage for the PR-1000 and PR-1100 has two vertical barbell storage spots, and REP says most of its bar storage is built around standard 2 in Olympic barbells.[2][6]
