3/8 vs 1/4 in pressure washer quick-connects
3/8 in quick-connects join hoses and guns; 1/4 in takes nozzles at the wand. They do not interchange, and the thread behind each is a separate spec.

Short answer
In the maker documents we read, 3/8 in quick-connects join hoses to pumps and guns, and 1/4 in quick-connects take nozzles and attachments at the wand. The two sizes do not interchange. The thread on the back of each fitting (M22, MPT or FPT) is a separate spec, so name the size, the gender and the rear thread.
Plug and coupler
Every quick-connect has two halves. The plug is the male half. The coupler (or socket) is the female half with a sliding collar that locks the plug in.
Industrial catalogs use the same idea under other names. Dixon's H-Series quick couplings come in two halves, a coupler and a nipple, held together by locking balls under a coupler sleeve, with O-ring and valve seals.[1] Those are hydraulic couplings, cited here only for the naming.
3/8 in: hoses, pumps and guns
The 3/8 in size shows up where the hose meets the machine and the gun:
- SIMPSON Monster Hose 41028: 3/8 in x 50 ft, with a 3/8 in male quick-connect plug on one end and a 3/8 in female socket on the other, rated 4,500 PSI and 140°F, cold water.[2]
- SIMPSON Armor Hose 41114: 3/8 in x 50 ft with 3/8 in quick-connect plug and socket ends, rated 4,500 PSI and 250°F for hot and cold water.[3]
- DEWALT DXPA50PH: 3/8 in x 50 ft with 3/8 in one-piece quick-connect socket and plug fittings, rated 5,000 PSI and 140°F.[4]
- Champion 100386: the pump outlet has a female quick connector with a sliding metal collar, and the parts list names a 3/8 quick coupler.[5]
1/4 in: the wand and its nozzles
The 1/4 in size is where nozzles, surface cleaners and foam cannons clip on:
- SIMPSON MSH3125 lance: a 16 in lance with a 1/4 in quick-connect outlet and an M22 male end.[6]
- DEWALT DXPA31SW: a 31 in wand rated up to 4,500 PSI that fits M22 spray-gun connections and has a 1/4 in quick-connect outlet for tips.[7]
- DEWALT tip sets: five-tip 1/4 in quick-connect sets in two versions, DXPA34ST (size 3.0, 3,400 PSI) and DXPA45ST (size 4.0, 4,500 PSI).[8]
- MTM Hydro PF22.2 foam cannon: the kit includes a 1/4 in M22 adaptor and a 1/4 in plated-steel quick-connect plug, and MTM notes some residential washers need its separately sold Low Profile QC plug.[9]
| Size | Where makers use it | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 3/8 in | Pump outlet, hose ends, gun inlet | SIMPSON 41028 and 41114; DEWALT DXPA50PH; Champion 100386 outlet |
| 1/4 in | Wand outlet, nozzles, attachments | SIMPSON MSH3125 lance; DEWALT DXPA31SW; DEWALT tip sets |
The thread behind the fitting
A quick-connect fitting has a second connection on its back: the thread that screws into a gun, wand or hose. That thread is a separate spec. MTM Hydro lists its PRIMA stainless couplers and plugs by size and port thread, for example 1/4 in MPT and 1/4 in FPT versions of each.[10] MTM's SGS28 gun has a 1/4 in FPT outlet, so a nozzle needs a male-threaded quick-connect coupler screwed into it.[11]
MPT and FPT are tapered pipe threads. Swagelok says tapered pipe threads seal on the threads and always need a sealant, while straight threads seal with a gasket or O-ring and need none.[12] The quick-connect joint itself seals on an O-ring, so tape never goes on the plug.
Material and rating
Do not judge a quick-connect by its metal. In Dixon's industrial H-Series, the same 3/8 in body is rated 4,000 PSI in steel, 2,500 in brass and 3,500 in 303 stainless.[1] That shows how much material can change a rating. It is not a rating for any pressure-washer part: read the rating of the exact quick-connect you buy.
Converting from M22
If your machine has M22 ends and your hose or accessory is 3/8 in quick-connect, you need an adapter named for both ends. ECHO's Quick Connect Coupler Kit contains two adapters that convert M22 to 3/8 in male or female connectors, listed for use up to 4,000 PSI.[13] More examples are in the adapter guide.
Parts by size
Picks that fit3 products
For 3/8 in quick-connect hose ends, choose the SIMPSON 41028 (cold water, 140°F) or the 41114 (rated to 250°F, which matters only if every other part is rated for hot water); both are 3/8 in x 50 ft, 4,500 PSI.
More on choosing
For 1/4 in nozzles, choose the DEWALT DXPA45ST (size 4.0, 4,500 PSI) only if your machine's nozzle size is 4.0. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or the brand.

Questions
What is the difference between 3/8 and 1/4 quick connect?
Size and job. In the maker documents we read, 3/8 in quick-connects join hoses to pumps and guns, and 1/4 in quick-connects take nozzles and attachments at the wand. One does not fit the other.[2][7]
Which end is the plug and which is the coupler?
The plug (male, also called a nipple in industrial catalogs) pushes into the coupler (female), which has a sliding collar or sleeve. SIMPSON's 41028 hose has a 3/8 in male plug on one end and a female socket on the other.[2][1]
Are brass quick connects rated lower than stainless?
In Dixon's industrial H-Series, a 3/8 in brass coupler is rated 2,500 PSI against 3,500 for 303 stainless and 4,000 for steel. Those are industrial parts; for any pressure-washer quick-connect, read that part's own rating.[1]
Do I need thread tape on a quick-connect?
Never on the quick-connect itself; it seals with an O-ring. Tapered pipe threads on the back of a fitting seal on the thread and need sealant, per Swagelok.[12]
