AliExpress soldering station buyer's checklist

Eight checks before you buy a soldering station on AliExpress: 110-120 V variant, grounding, tip system, safety marks, the real seller, returns and import costs.

Short answer

Before you pay for a soldering station on AliExpress, check the exact variant you have selected: a 110-120 V rating,[1][2] a grounded US plug, the tip system you want, safety marks you can verify, who the seller really is, whether the Free Return label applies, and what import costs you will owe in the US or Canada. The wrong voltage variant is the most serious mistake; the rest cost money or time.

Ready to buy?

We have not picked a product for this exact topic yet. Our best picks lists the products we have checked, each with its store link.

The checklist

  1. Voltage: the selected variant says 110 V, 120 V or 110-120 V.
  2. Plug and grounding: a grounded three-prong US plug, and tip-to-ground figures if the seller gives them.
  3. Tip system: the handle and tips match the system you want to keep buying.
  4. Safety marks: any UL, ETL or CSA claim can be found in the lab's own directory.
  5. Seller: you know whether the brand itself links to the store.
  6. Returns: you know whether the listing carries the Free Return label.
  7. US import costs: you have allowed for duties, taxes and fees.
  8. Canadian import costs: you have allowed for duty and tax above CAD 20.

Each check is explained below.

1. The voltage is in the variant name

The US Department of Energy gives US household power as 110-120 V at 60 Hz.[1] A variant labeled 110 V, 120 V or 110-120 V is the one to choose. A rated input that spans that range, such as the 110-240 V a YIHUA-branded page gives for the 982-III, also covers a US outlet.[3]

Read the variant you select, not the listing title. Makers that sell in both markets publish separate mains versions: Weller has 120 V and 230 V versions of its WE1010 kit, and JBC sells its CDB station as the CD-1BQF for 120 V and the CD-2BQF for 230 V.[4][5] Some products are published as 220 V only, such as YIHUA's 959D and QUICK's 861DW hot-air stations.[6][7]

Two listings we track show the difference. The YIHUA 982-III listing offers a C245 set and a C210 set, each described by the seller as 120 V with a US plug. The KSGER T12 listing mentions both 110 V and 220 V, but its variant name does not say which you get, so ask the seller to confirm 110 V in writing before you pay.

2. The plug is a grounded US plug

A grounded plug connects the station to your outlet's ground wire, which is also the connection the ESD Association prefers for an ESD workstation.[8] Hakko, for example, grounds the three-conductor version of its FR-301 desoldering tool to prevent electrostatic damage to components.[9]

Better still is a published tip-to-ground figure. Hakko and JBC give under 2 ohms and under 2 mV for their stations.[10][5] Few marketplace listings publish one, so treat a missing figure as unknown, and never use an adapter that removes the ground pin.

3. The tip system is the one you want

The station decides which tips you buy for years. Check the handle named in the variant: T12-format handles take T12-format tips, and C245, C210 and C115 handles each take their own cartridge family.[11][12][13] Genuine Hakko cartridges for North America carry T15 part numbers, so we describe marketplace "T12" tips as T12-format parts unless the seller can show Hakko authorization.[14]

Check the handle against the maker's own documentation where it exists. The YIHUA-branded 982-III page lists only C115 and C210 handle packages, so the listing's C245 set is the seller's description; confirm the handle in the listing photos.[3] The tip system finder shows what each system fits.

4. Safety marks you can check

  • UL, ETL, CSA and other NRTL marks come from labs that OSHA recognizes to certify products.[15][16] A logo in a photo is easy to copy, so look the product up in the certifier's directory; Intertek runs one for the ETL mark.[17]
  • CE is the manufacturer's own declaration for EU law, not an approval of safety by any authority.[18]
  • FCC authorization concerns radio-frequency interference, not shock or fire safety.[19]

OSHA does not require manufacturers to have their products certified by a recognized lab.[20] A genuine listing is evidence of safety testing; a missing one is an unknown, not proof of a problem. UL vs ETL vs CE vs FCC explains each mark.

5. Who is really selling

A store's name is not authorization. The strongest sign is a link from the brand's own website: QUICKO's site links its AliExpress store, for example.[21] A store named "KSGER Official Store" exists, but we found no KSGER-controlled website that confirms it.[22]

Some brands say plainly where their genuine products are sold. Pine64 says no genuine Pinecils are sold on AliExpress and it has no authorized resellers there.[23] Its Where-to-buy page names the channels it does use, including an Amazon US listing.[24] American Hakko tells buyers to use authorized distributors and warns that counterfeits can carry the Hakko logo.[25] It also says sellers outside the US and Canada are most likely not selling product made for North America.[26] If a brand you want is not genuinely sold on AliExpress, buy it through a channel the brand names; the Pinecil vs TS101 guide shows how that works for the Pinecil.

6. Returns

AliExpress's Free Return terms apply only to items that carry the Free Return label. You must request the return within 15 calendar days; free return shipping is limited to one per request and three per month; and the item must be unused, undamaged and in its original packaging with seals and labels.[27] The terms do not list eligible countries, so check the label on the listing itself before you order.

7. US import costs

Duty-free de minimis treatment for low-value imports was suspended for all countries from August 29, 2025, under Executive Order 14324, and Executive Order 14388 continued the suspension in February 2026.[28] US Customs and Border Protection then made it indefinite: from June 24, 2026 for shipments of $800 or less by modes other than mail, and from July 24, 2026 for mail, with a new informal entry process for mail shipments up to $2,500.[28][29] Legislation ends the exemption on July 1, 2027.[28]

In practice, applicable duties, taxes and fees are owed whatever the order value. Whether they are prepaid at checkout depends on the listing and the carrier, so check before you pay.

8. Canadian import costs

For goods from countries outside the CUSMA trade agreement, such as China, the Canada Border Services Agency gives duty and tax relief only up to CAD 20. The higher CAD 150 duty and CAD 40 tax levels apply to qualifying courier shipments from the US or Mexico, and the postal framework is unchanged.[30]

Questions

Is a '110 V' soldering station right for a 120 V outlet?

Yes, if that is its rated input. The US Department of Energy describes US household power as 110-120 V at 60 Hz, so a variant labeled 110 V, 120 V or 110-120 V is the one to choose. Check the rating printed on the unit when it arrives.[1]

Can I use a 220 V soldering station with a plug adapter?

Do not plan on it; buy the 110-120 V variant. Makers that sell in both markets publish separate mains versions, such as Weller's 120 V and 230 V WE1010 kits and JBC's CD-1BQF (120 V) and CD-2BQF (230 V) stations.[4][5]

Does an FCC or CE mark mean a station is electrically safe?

No. CE is the manufacturer's own declaration for EU law, and FCC authorization concerns radio-frequency interference. For safety testing, look for a recognized lab's mark, such as ETL, that you can find in the lab's directory.[18][19][17]

Are Hakko or JBC parts sold on AliExpress genuine?

Do not assume so. American Hakko tells buyers to use authorized distributors and warns that counterfeits can carry its logo. We found no JBC statement about marketplace sellers, so we treat such parts as compatible, not genuine.[25]

Will I pay duty on an AliExpress order to the US?

Applicable duties, taxes and fees are owed whatever the order value. De minimis treatment has been suspended for all countries since August 29, 2025, and 2026 CBP rules extended the suspension to every shipping mode, including mail.[28][29]

How long do I have to return an AliExpress item?

For items with the Free Return label, AliExpress's terms give 15 calendar days to request a return, and the item must be unused and in its original packaging. For other items, check the return terms shown on the listing before you order.[27]
