Short answer
FPV work mixes tiny flight-controller pads with heavy battery leads and power connectors. A bench station with power to spare (C245) handles the big joints, and a portable TS100-style iron covers field repairs. Treat every flight pack as a fire risk: iFixit warns that a charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged.

Key facts
- Suggested tip system
- C245 station at the bench; TS100-style iron in the field[1][2]Our suggestion: JBC designs C245 for high-power jobs (150 W peak on its T245 handle), and Pine64 lists LiPo packs among the Pinecil V2's power options.
- Key safety step
- Treat every lithium pack as a fire risk[3][4]iFixit warns a charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged. EPA says used lithium batteries do not belong in household trash or recycling bins: take them to battery recycling or household hazardous waste collection, and contact the maker about damaged ones.
Watch out for
- No genuine Pinecils on AliExpress. Pine64 says Pinecils sold there are not made by Pine64 and that it has no authorized resellers on the platform. Its Where-to-buy page links an Amazon US listing instead; see TS100-style tips.
- Check your iron's battery limit. Pine64 lists 3S to 5S LiPo packs for the Pinecil V2 and Sequre lists 3S-6S for its SI012, but Oscar Liang notes that a full 6S pack (25.2 V) is not officially supported on the TS101.
- Battery leads soak up heat. SparkFun's advice for heat-hungry joints such as ground planes is a larger tip, a higher temperature and extra flux; an undersized tip struggles to melt the solder fully.
What fits
Product details below are the seller's own description unless a source is shown. Pick the variant named for each item.
Bench station (C245)
YIHUA 982‑III precision soldering station (C115/C210/C245)Choose the 982-III C245 set, 120 V US variant.
The C245 set is the seller's description; a YIHUA-branded spec page lists only C115 and C210 handles for the 982-III, so check the handle and 120 V rating in the listing. Add a large chisel tip for battery leads.

Image: PINE64 Field iron (Pinecil V2)
PINE64 Pinecil V2 USB-C smart soldering ironChoose the Pinecil V2 (PINECIL-BB2) on the Amazon listing Pine64's Where-to-buy page links, and add a USB-C PD charger (Pine64 recommends 65 W or more for its short tips).
Pine64 says the listing has the iron with no tips or accessories. Check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or Pine64, run Pine64's authenticity checker on arrival, and keep battery packs within Pine64's 12-24 V rating.

Essentials (bench): a C245 or T12 station with a large chisel tip for battery leads and a fine tip for flight-controller pads, flux, 0.5-0.8 mm solder, tweezers, heat-shrink tubing, a multimeter, and fume extraction or good ventilation.
Field kit: a TS100-style USB-C iron with a charger or battery lead that suits its voltage range, spare tips and a small reel of solder. The Pinecil V2 in the kit list comes without tips or accessories, per Pine64, so add the charger and any tips you need.
Optional upgrades: a smoke stopper (a current-limiting lead for the first power-up after repairs) and a bench power supply.
Questions
Can I build an FPV drone with a USB-C soldering iron?
Yes for most joints, with a strong enough supply. Pine64 rates the Pinecil V2 at up to 88 W at 24 V through its DC input (its USB-C PD input runs at 12-20 V) and lists LiPo packs among its power options. Thick battery leads and connectors are easier on a bench station; JBC rates its T245 handle at 150 W peak.[5][2][1]
Can I power a soldering iron from a flight pack?
Some irons support it. Pine64 lists 3S, 4S and 5S LiPo packs for the Pinecil V2 and Sequre lists 3S-6S for its SI012, while Oscar Liang notes that a full 6S pack is not officially supported on the TS101. Check your iron's maximum input voltage first.[2][6][7]
What should I do with a damaged LiPo pack?
iFixit warns that a charged lithium-ion battery may catch fire if damaged. EPA says to keep lithium batteries out of household trash and recycling bins, tape the terminals or bag them separately, take them to battery recycling or household hazardous waste collection, and contact the maker about damaged ones.[3][4]
