Tube patch or tubeless plug? Match the repair to the tire and tube

A patch repairs an inner tube; a plug repairs a small hole in a tubeless tire with sealant. What Park Tool, Tubolito and Stan's say each repair is for.

Short answer

A patch repairs a hole in an inner tube. A plug repairs a small hole in a tubeless tire that runs sealant. Neither is made for the other system. And not every patch suits every tube: Park Tool and Tubolito disagree on patching TPU tubes, so follow your tube maker.

Patches: for inner tubes

A patch seals a hole in the tube itself. Park Tool says its GP-2 glueless patches work on butyl and TPU tubes but not on latex tubes or tubeless tires, and should be considered a temporary fix.[1] Park Tool's repair guide adds that you should not test a glueless patch by inflating the tube outside the tire.[2]

TPU tubes: two maker positions

Tubolito takes a different view for its own TPU tubes. It says repair kits made for butyl tubes are not compatible with its tubes, and supplies its own patch kit with special glue: 5 large and 5 small patches plus glue.[3]

Both are maker statements. For a Tubolito tube, the tube maker's instruction is the one to follow. Tubolito also gives 0.5 bar as the limit for inflating its tubes outside a tire.[4]

Plugs: for tubeless tires with sealant

A tubeless plug fills a small hole in the tire, and the sealant finishes the seal.

  • Park Tool's TPT-1 plug tool repairs small punctures in tubeless tires with sealant and is not compatible with inner tube systems. It includes 5 vulcanized rubber plugs.[5] Park Tool gives no maximum hole size beyond "small".
  • Stan's says its DART tubeless repair tool reacts with latex-based sealants, was developed for Stan's sealant, and does not need its feather material trimmed.[6] Stan's says results with other latex sealants may vary. Its page does not address hole size or inner tubes.

Sealant, CO2 and TPU after the repair

  • Tubeless and CO2. Stan's NoTubes calls CO2 an emergency option for tubeless tires and says prolonged CO2 exposure can make sealant separate, so replace it with air.[7]
  • TPU and CO2. Tubolito says CO2 escapes faster than air from its tubes, so they need reinflating sooner.[4]
  • TPU valve cores. Tubolito says its Presta (SV) cores are glued in; only its Schrader (AV) valves have removable cores that accept sealant.[4]

If a plug does not hold, the usual fallback is to fit a tube to get home and have a shop look at the tire. See road and gravel ride repair kits for what to carry.

Plug tools for tubeless riders

All the approved plug tools are for tubeless tires, not for inner tubes.

Tubeless with sealant only: choose the TPT-1 with 5 plugs, or the DART tool with 2 DARTs if you run Stan's or another latex-based sealant (Stan's says results with other latex sealants may vary).

More on choosing

Or choose the Muc-Off Puncture Plug Repair Kit (20131, on either of two listings), a plug and reamer tool with plugs in several thicknesses; Muc-Off limits road repairs to 80 psi, and its US page and the Amazon listing give different plug counts, so check the listing. None is for inner tubes. On Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com, Park Tool, Stan's NoTubes or Muc-Off.

Questions

Can I patch a TPU tube with a normal patch kit?

The makers disagree. Park Tool says its GP-2 glueless patches work on butyl and TPU tubes, while Tubolito says repair kits made for butyl tubes are not compatible with its tubes and supplies its own kit. For a Tubolito tube, follow Tubolito.[1][3]

Can I use a tubeless plug on an inner tube?

No. Park Tool says its TPT-1 plug tool is for small punctures in tubeless tires with sealant and is not compatible with inner tube systems.[5]

Are glueless patches permanent?

Park Tool says its GP-2 glueless patches should be considered a temporary fix, and that they do not work on latex tubes or tubeless tires.[1]

Does Stan's DART work with other sealants?

Stan's says the DART reacts with latex-based sealants and was developed for Stan's sealant, and that results with other latex sealants may vary.[6]

How big a hole can a tubeless plug fix?

Park Tool describes the TPT-1 as for small punctures and gives no maximum size; Stan's DART page does not address hole size. If a plug will not hold, use a tube to get home and ask a shop about the tire.[5][6]
