Short answer
T12 and C245 are separate cartridge systems from different makers, and each fits its own handles, so choose the system before the station. Hakko describes its T12 cartridge as a tip with the heater and sensor built in,[1] and sells the range as T12 in Asia and T15 in North America and Europe.[2] JBC rates its T245 handle for C245 cartridges at 150 W peak, for both SMD work and high-power jobs such as ground planes.[3]
At a glance
| Feature | T12 | C245 |
|---|---|---|
| Original maker | Hakko, for its FM-2027 and FM-2028 irons[2] | JBC, for its T245 handle[3] |
| Name in North America | Hakko sells it as T15[2] | C245 |
| Maker's power rating | 70 W power consumption at 24 V for Hakko's iron[4] | 150 W peak for JBC's handle |
| What the maker stresses | Fast thermal recovery that allows lower settings[1] | SMD work plus high-power jobs such as ground planes |
| Finer sizes from the same maker | Not in our sources | C210 for precision work and C115, JBC's smallest[5] |
| On AliExpress | T12-format stations and tips from other makers | C245-compatible stations and tips from other makers |
The two power figures are different kinds of rating, a power consumption and a peak, so they are not directly comparable.
T12: the Hakko system and its clones
Hakko's T12 range is the original. In the US and Canada, genuine Hakko cartridges carry T15 part numbers;[2] the T12 vs T15 guide explains the naming. Because the heater and sensor sit in each cartridge, a worn tip is replaced as a whole cartridge.
T12 stations on AliExpress are usually built by other companies around T12-format cartridges. Treat them as T12-format, not Hakko, unless the seller proves otherwise. American Hakko tells buyers to use authorized distributors and warns that counterfeits can copy its designs and colors and even carry its logo.[6] Third-party makers offer T12-format tips in many shapes; Sequre, for example, lists T12-K, T12-D24 and T12-BC2.[7]
Store names prove little. An AliExpress store is titled "KSGER Official Store", but we found no KSGER website confirming that it belongs to the brand.[8] QUICKO, by contrast, links its AliExpress store from its own website.[9]
C245: the JBC system and its clones
JBC's T245 general-purpose handle takes C245 cartridges, along with the C245E and longer C245L ranges.[3] JBC's range also includes the precision C210 and the nano C115, on their own handles. A station that accepts several handle sizes lets you add those later; see C210 vs C245.
C245-format stations and handles are also built by other makers, such as AiXun[10] and QUICKO.[11] Describe these as C245-compatible. We found no JBC statement on which marketplace sellers are authorized, and JBC's ratings describe JBC's own handles and cartridges, not compatible ones. A YIHUA-branded site, for example, documents the 982-III with C115 and C210 handles only, so the C245 version sold on AliExpress is the listing's claim.[12]
How to choose
- Already own tips? Stay in that system.
- Mostly kits, through-hole and general repair? Either system works.
- Heavy joints and ground planes? C245: JBC rates the T245 at 150 W peak for exactly that kind of work.[3] See why ground planes are hard to solder.
- Want finer handles later? A C245 station that also accepts C210 or C115 handles.
- Not sure? The tip system finder walks through it, and the tip shape guide covers which shapes to buy once you have chosen.
Using both systems on one bench needs a station built for both. AiXun, for example, lists a T3A station for T245 and T12 handles.[10]
Picks that fit2 products
YIHUA 982-III (C245-compatible): choose the C245 set, 120 V US variant; on Amazon, check that 'Ships from / Sold by' shows Amazon.com or YIHUA OFFICIAL STORE before you buy.
More on choosing
KSGER (T12-format): the listing mentions 110 V and 220 V without saying which you get, so ask the seller to confirm 110 V in writing.

Questions
Is a T12 tip the same as a T15 tip?
Hakko uses the two names as regional series for its FM-2027 and FM-2028 irons: T12 for Japan, Oceania, Asia and other countries, T15 for North America and Europe. We found no Hakko page comparing them part by part, so match part numbers to your iron. See T12 vs T15 tips.[2]
Are the T12 tips sold on AliExpress made by Hakko?
Treat them as T12-format tips from other makers unless the seller proves Hakko provenance. American Hakko tells buyers to use authorized distributors and warns that counterfeits can copy its designs and even carry its logo.[6]
Is C245 better than T12?
Not across the board. JBC rates its T245 handle at 150 W peak and aims it at both SMD and high-power work such as ground planes, while Hakko stresses its T12 cartridge's fast thermal recovery. Choose by the joints you solder and the handles you may add later.[3][1]
Can one station use both T12 and C245 tips?
Only a station built for both handle types. AiXun, for example, lists a T3A station for T245 and T12 handles. Otherwise, plan on one tip system per station.[10]
Do JBC's specifications apply to C245-compatible tips?
No. JBC's ratings, such as the T245 handle's 150 W peak, describe JBC's own handles and cartridges. Compatible tips and handles carry their own makers' claims, which we treat as unverified.[3]
