Extension wands and lances: connections, ratings and reach
A wand's inlet must match your gun and its outlet takes your nozzles; its PSI and GPM rating must cover your machine. SIMPSON, DEWALT, Westinghouse and RYOBI compared.

Short answer
A wand has two ends to check. Its inlet must match your gun's outlet, usually an M22 thread, and its outlet takes your nozzles, usually a 1/4 in quick-connect. Its PSI and GPM rating must cover your machine's output. No wand fits every machine: check the maker's stated connections and model list.
The two ends
A lance or wand sits between the gun and the nozzle. The gun end screws or clicks into the gun; the far end holds the tip.
- SIMPSON's MSH3125 parts list shows a 16 in lance with a 1/4 in quick-connect outlet and an M22 male end (part 7103550).[1]
- DEWALT's DXPA31SW is a 31 in spray wand rated up to 4,500 PSI that fits standard M22 spray-gun connections and has a 1/4 in quick-connect outlet for tips.[2] DEWALT says it is for cold water only.
- On the Champion 100386, the wand attaches to the gun with an M22 coupler.[3] Champion's 100384 manual describes the same M22 coupler joining wand and gun.[4]
Neither Champion manual gives the 14 or 15 mm bore of that M22 joint. If your gun's maker does not state it, see M22 14 mm vs 15 mm before buying. On the nozzle side, most wands end in the 1/4 in quick-connect standard.
Telescoping wands
A telescoping wand adds reach, and adds more fittings to check.
Westinghouse PWEXT. Westinghouse lists a 1/4 in quick-connect outlet and a 4,000 PSI maximum.[5] Its own sources disagree on length: the manual says the wand is adjustable from 6 to 9 feet, and the product page lists 10.5 ft assembled.[6] The manual lists a male M22-14 inlet, a 3/8 in quick plug on the gun inlet with two M22 male brass fittings in the box, and the 1/4 in quick-connect outlet.[6] The kit includes a metal gun, a gutter wand, a 30-degree angle wand and a five-piece quick-connect nozzle set.[5]
Westinghouse lists the PWEXT as compatible with its ePX2000, ePX3050, ePX3100, ePX3100v, ePX3500, WPX2300e, WPX2700e, WPX3000e, WPX3200e, WPX3400e, WPX2700, WPX3200, WPX3400, WPX3600 and WPX3800.[5] That list includes the Westinghouse ePX3500 and WPX3200. For other brands, check the fittings yourself.
RYOBI RY31EP26VNM. RYOBI's Canadian site lists an 18 ft telescoping extension pole for washers up to 4,200 PSI, with a wash brush, a support strap and a 3/8 in quick-connect to M22 adaptor.[7] We did not read the US listing, and the page gives no collapsed length or warnings.
Side by side
| Wand | Length as listed | Inlet | Outlet | PSI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SIMPSON MSH3125 lance (7103550) | 16 in | M22 male | 1/4 in QC | not stated in the parts list |
| DEWALT DXPA31SW | 31 in | standard M22 gun connection | 1/4 in QC | up to 4,500 |
| Westinghouse PWEXT | 6 to 9 ft (manual); 10.5 ft assembled (product page) | M22-14 male; 3/8 in quick plug at the gun | 1/4 in QC | 4,000 max |
| RYOBI RY31EP26VNM (Canada) | 18 ft | 3/8 in QC to M22 adaptor included | not stated | up to 4,200 |
The rating must cover your machine
Westinghouse's PWEXT manual says never to exceed the wand's rated pressure or volume and never to use it with unapproved accessories.[6] Cat Pumps advises that a high-pressure system is only as strong as its weakest component.[8] A wand rated below your machine's output is the wrong wand, whatever its length.
Longer wands come with their own handling warnings, covered in extension wand safety. Read it before using any wand from a height.

SIMPSON 80479 (31 in) and 80149 (16 in) are listed with an M22 gun connection and a 1/4 in quick-connect nozzle end; confirm your gun takes an M22 wand.
More on choosing
Westinghouse PWEXT has a male M22-14 inlet and comes as a kit with its own gun; it is listed for the Westinghouse models above. Keep the wand's PSI rating above your machine's. On Amazon, check that Ships from / Sold by is Amazon.com or the brand.

Questions
Do extension wands fit all pressure washers?
No. Westinghouse, for example, lists the specific Westinghouse models its PWEXT wand is compatible with. Check the wand's inlet against your gun's outlet and its rating against your machine.[5]
What connection does an extension wand use?
Usually an M22 male inlet into the gun and a 1/4 in quick-connect outlet for nozzles. SIMPSON's MSH3125 lance and DEWALT's DXPA31SW both use that pairing, and Westinghouse's PWEXT has a male M22-14 inlet.[1][2][6]
