Short answer
HDMI ports on game consoles and laptops have fine surface-mount pins plus large shield tabs soldered into ground. Hot air lifts the connector, a C245 iron with a broad tip handles the heavy tabs, and flux, wick and magnification let you check every pin. Work on a grounded ESD mat with a wrist strap.

Key facts
Watch out for
- Shield tabs soak up heat. SparkFun's advice for heat-hungry joints such as ground planes is a larger tip, a higher temperature and extra flux; a preheater helps on thick boards.
- Inspect before power-up. Check every pin for bridges under magnification; Adafruit says a bridge can usually be drawn off by dragging a hot tip between the joints.
- Leave the power supply alone. On consoles with an internal mains power supply, unplug the console and leave that section to a qualified technician; this kit is for the low-voltage main board.
What fits
Product details below are the seller's own description unless a source is shown. Pick the variant named for each item.
Hot-air station
JCD 858D 700 W hot-air rework stationChoose the 110 V US-plug variant.
The same listing also sells a 220 V EU version. The seller states 700 W.

Essentials: a 120 V hot-air station, a C245 iron with a chisel or knife tip, flux, solder wick, a microscope or strong magnifier, a board holder, heat-resistant tape, and an ESD mat with a wrist strap.
Optional upgrades: a board preheater, a C210 handle for fine touch-ups, and low-melt removal alloy for stubborn connectors.
Questions
Hot air or soldering iron for an HDMI port?
Both. Hot air melts the pins and shield tabs together so the connector lifts cleanly; an iron with a broad tip and flux finishes the tabs and cleans the pads.
Which tip system suits HDMI port work?
C245, with a C210 handle for fine touch-ups. JBC designs C245 for SMD work and high-power jobs such as ground planes, which matches the connector's ground tabs.[1]
Do I need a preheater for console boards?
It is an upgrade, not a first purchase. A preheater warms the whole board so the iron and hot air have less heat to supply, and Hakko markets its FR-830 hot-air preheater as best suited to multi-layer boards.[5]
